that's what *you* think...I don't think Big N will let this game be piratable on day one. An update from the gateway team will be required most definitely. They are definitely going to throw every form of 3DS Anti-Piracy in the book at this one (perhaps some new ones) btw I should remind you people from Nintendo DO watch this site. Even though they can't go after EACH person on here, I wouldn't proudly toot my piratey tune too much.

Considering smash was done before gateway even released the firmware with the 7.x encryption cracked, I can definitely see smash being playable from day one.

EDIT: They could release a new firmware, but they will not delay the game to write a new encryption on it.

There could be other things though. This is the first 3DS game to use NNID extensively and the first New 3DS compatible game.

I very much doubt that the NNID/New3DS thing will cause any roadblocks here. I'm sure it'll be playable. Still waiting on that dump, though.

I mean US/EU GW users can't access the JP eShop to get the patch for "online". Does that mean online is not integrated with the game out of the box? You need a patch for online to be enabled?

According to Nintendo Japan, Smash Bros 3DS will be releasing with a 1.01 software update on day 1. 3DS owners who purchase the retail physical copy of the game will be required to download the 46MB (375 blocks) update from the eShop while the digital version will come prepackaged with the update.

The 1.01 update adds online functionality to the game as well as a new "Conquest Mode", which may trigger during online matches. Conquest mode pits your selected character of choice against others and winning awards you with gold or customization parts for said character.

3DS Flashcard users note, you won't be able to download the software update from the Japan eShop unless you have a Japanese region 3DS. This means that other region 3DS owners looking to get the game early will be locked out of the online mode completely. Other features should work as intended.

yeah, in the demo i noticed you get these coins after a match, and i think i read that when you get 100 or something you can make your character 'gold'.
i wonder why they didn't manage to add this to the game when it was 'produced'...

and keep in mind that nintendo did not do this because of pirates, people will still be able to pirate the game, people will still be able to go online.

It's not uncommon. Fantasy Life was another title that required a software update to add online functionality and many online-centric titles have had updates that affected the online functionality. Naturally it's not a means to thwart pirates as any Japanese 3DS owner will still be able to download the update and play the online as intended. This thread is more of a PSA to other region 3DS owners who were looking to get their hands on the game with the intent to try online before its available in their country.

Monster Hunter 4 had the same issue as well, you can't go online or download any DLC quests without the patch.

the only thing it prevents (at the moment - with 3ds hacking how it is) is region free online piracy, which i doubt is even an issue relative to 'piracy', so sure.
i downloaded the update for monster hunter 4, and animal crossing, sure, to go online NOW you need them, but they were not day 1 patches right, before the patches came out you could still go online. maybe the developers just ran out of time (nothing wrong with that) to ship it on the cart i guess.

Yea like mario kart. Or we can prolly just download it on emunand?

i thought that updated mario kart is simply a cart with the update, not the version from the eshop, right? since there are carts wit the update on.

No you will not be able to go online. The game will prevent you from going online until you update. Some japanese games prevents you from playing the game entirely until you update. That's why u gotta kill the internet connection from the EMUNand before u play the game.
This patch is a day one patch.

lol i will be able to go online. i will still be able to go online because i will go to the eshop, download the update, jeez...

what are you talking about 'that is why you have to kill the internet connection'?
the worst that would happen is that the game prompts you to update itself when you run it... asking you to press y.
day 1 patch or not, it doesn't stop pirates playing online...
