Anyway yeah I won't continue on this. I wasn't talking about the timeline anymore, but just giving my two cents on why Link shouldn't be female. They should make Zelda playable then or something. Zelda have a mild fairytale romantic touch to it and I wouldn't like that to be lost.
What if Zelda was male when you choose a female Link? Doesn't that fix your loophole? Prince Zeldurr and Likle, the Heroine of Time - has a nice ring to it. :P

Oh for sure, but I actually really do like dissecting the Zelda timeline and trying to determine how things work, like as you said, how did Link go from having a ton of crap at the end of Wind Waker to nothing at the beginning of Phantom Hourglass. There is no concrete answer, but it is fun to speculate, and build the story up however you personally wish.
To each their own ^_^

The timeline is pretty dumb and patchy. A lot of it is really half-assed ("Oh, fuck, we need another timeline. Just say that Link failed in OoT, I guess, and that's it's own timeline or something. Fuck, I didn't know there'd be writing involved in this job!") and it really doesn't add anything to the games anyway. Bleh.

Besides, I much prefer the explanation that the "Legend" of Zelda is retold constantly throughout Hyrule, and each game (barring the direct sequels) is just another version of that same legend.

Which would explain why almost each and every game has an identical premise of Hero X saves Princess Y.

It is very convenient, isn't it?

As far as convenient retcons go, I prefer the one that at least embraces its status over the one that pretends to be something more. Already we're putting more thought into this than Nintendo, though, so it's not like it really matters either way.

^THIS. I imagine the same thing since OoT 64 launch, me and some friends were like "What if TLoZ 1, 2 and ALttP are the same history but told in a different form? After all, it's just a "Legend". You won the thread this time again :D.

I think thats the kind of thing they want and like. They probably enjoy the convenience of the multiverse, and at the same time feel like the fans deserve to interpret how the games all work together, while still giving out their version of how it all works. I think its fun and invokes the imagination of the player.

This might be why I love Majora's Mask so much. Not only is it dark as Hell, its got a significantly different formula. You aren't trying to save a princess, you're trying to save yourself (and the world while you're at it). But ho-boy, on the topic of the multiverse and split timelines, I've left Terminia to be destroyed far more times that I've actually saved it, Hell thats true for anyone that's played the game. Talk about bleak.
