No, only with a power saves dongle or other hardware. The save for Pokemon and animal crossing are stored on the game cart itself.

Actually, if he has Gateway he can. You'll need to dump the rom - There's an application to dump CARD2 saves from the rom, (so you can have the save, itself. Then you can either overwrite it with another or just... save it.)

You had probably better clarify that a bit. That only applies if he played the cart on a Gateway modded 3DS only. If it was played on a up-to-date retail 3DS, then the save transferred along with the ROM will always be rejected as corrupt when the ROM is loaded. You also cannot rewrite the save from a Gateway ROM back to a retail cart at this time either.

Unless you have Powersaves or an equivalent device, never delete the save on a retail cart unless you want to lose the data on it permanently.

I say this only because so many people show up to these threads and fail to read all of the background info first. While we may know these facts, others may not. Unfortunately, reading up on a device before using it seems to be a universal weak point among many these days.

If you bought the power saves device you could, it works on any firmware, and you can then use cheats on Pokemon too(and any other games you have), have a little look in the power saves thread there is plenty of info there to look at on what codes there are, it may be worth it to you....plus you can then backup your save and restart and restore your old save at a later date......currently that seems to be the only option for you
