My Wii U's running 5.0 and the Quick Menu is a pretty sweet addition to it, makes it quicker to access whichever part I wanna go to.

I updated it so it's too late to resolve anything, but I'm loving it.

I've read all 13 pages of this thread and I still have a few questions.

1. Is there a way to turn off the automatic updates in 5.0 and still have the quick launch? Probably not.

2. If I do stop my system from updating, will I not be able to play newer games online? That may be a deal breaker.

3. Is there a way in advance to see that Nintendo will be releasing a system update? That way I can keep the awesomeness of the quick launch right now and then just turn off standby features after Nintendo announces a new system update.

Razor83@, both of those links didn't work, the update still downloads. Do you guys know which URL is used for updates in the U.S.?
Hmm, so I guess it is region specific. Well searching for the first website:-
nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net

On this IP finder:-
https://www.site24x7.com/find-ip-address-of-web-site.html
It shows this pair of IP addresses:-
173.223.232.147
173.223.232.153

However this IP finder:-
http://websiteipaddress.com
Shows a different pair of IP addresses:-
206.190.79.203
206.190.79.211

So maybe give these a try? (To be honest i'm just guessing here since i'm not that knowledgeable about IP addresses)

...Perhaps the best method to find the IP addresses for your region would be to try pinging the website from your PC using a command prompt as described here:-

1) There isn't. Sneaky Nintendo.
2) You should still be able to, people have confirmed that games like MK8 are stil playable on 4.1.0.
3) Not as far as I know. We might be able to setup a Wiimpersonator for Wii U to see what actually changed but that would still be the best we're gonna get.

Actually, for number three, they sometimes talk about certain system updates ahead of time, although it's rare. They did this prior to June 6th when the eShop was coming to the 3DS. People were anticipating it for weeks.

Gamediscs have no systemenu updates as of yet.
I've been on 4.1 since forever and own the latest games and never a game prompted me to update the system menu once.
So I agree out of experience.
System menu/ FW are only pushed via Wifi/internet.

I was on 4.0.3 before Mario Kart 8 came out. The game disc updated me to 4.1.0, so that being said, game discs can and do sometimes contain updates.

I was simply replying to someone else who claimed updates were not being pushed on game discs. Of course they are. Luckily for all of us hackers, 5.0.0 was released after MK8 came out so we're not forced to update (if we don't want to). Although one could update to 5.0.0 anyways and disable standby mode, automatic software downloads and if you're ultra paranoid blacklist the update servers to prevent any new updates from being stealthily installed on your system without your knowledge ;).

That's all I did. No point in blacklisting the update servers if you disable the ability for it to update without your consent first lol. But still, quite a dick move on Nintendo's part to introduce this. No other computing device installs updates on its own without asking for your consent. Even Windows does this. You can enable it to install updates automatically, but it asks you for this. I honestly hope that they remove this feature in their next FW version, because firmware updates require an agreement to be made before it installs, something you can't do if it does it on its own, and when you think about that, they're breaking their own agreement to that because they're doing it without your permission or agreement to those terms.

If there's enough of a public outcry, Nintendo will be forced to remove this functionality. My only concern with that though is that the Wii U scene is only a small percentage of the small amount of people that own a Wii U, so I'm not sure we could pull it off.

The average end user would likely not care (as it doesn't effect them much)

Razor83@ Did what you said and got this (nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net):

23.62.236.139

nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net:

69.25.139.188

Blocked them both and now when I try to update the system it yells at me with Error Code 162-0025. I'm pretty sure it's the first one, because when I ping the second one it throws a "Request timed out.". Lemme go try again with just the first one and see if that's the one.

EDIT 1: Okay, when I block one of each individually, it still updates. Let's try both...

EDIT 2: Nope, still updates. That error must have just been random. Now what?

This is false. Mario Kart 8 brought me up to 4.1.0 without the internet even hooked up.

I'm planning on buying MK8 soon, but i want to stay in 4.1 for my own reasons. Will I not be able to play online then?
