I think this is the right forum category, if it isn't, please forgive me.

Anyway, i have been looking for a REAL sword art online game for awhile, and the only games that exist are slow, boring, and usually japanese. I want a SAO game that is the real deal, quick action, full control over what you do, and beautiful!

So, once i realized there is no game out there like it, i decided to come here requesting help in actually making the game!

Unless other people know of a better engine for this product, i have settled on the Unreal Engine, using the Unreal Development Kit. It supports 3d programs i am familiar with and has a wide array of capabilities.

I am here looking to recruit people who would be interested in helping! Conversations would take place over a program called RaidCall. Skype would be used, but the valuable RAM that raidcall saves is needed, and data would be exchanged via dropbox or similar.

If you want to know more, just ask your question below. Please note though, that unless we can get permission from the original creators of SAO, none of us will be getting paid. However, if we do publish, money will be split among all who participate. Once we complete the first 5/100 floors, we should have enough to go up to Bandai Namco and the creators of the anime and seek approval and possible funds for the project.

Also, even if you're not a good programmer/designer, but wish to learn, don't worry, i'm learning myself while i work. This is day two of my working and i am only just starting to figure out the landscape of floor 1 and how to incorporate buildings, paths, etc into it. We will all learn something from this.

Thank you for reading! Remember, questions below, i will check whenever i get a chance and answer them ASAP! I really hope that you each consider taking part in this project!

Ehhh. Unless you have years (and I mean years) of experience with creating games, and an experienced team, I can guarantee that this will never get off the ground. It's simply far, far too complicated to even think of doing. A full on 3D game is far too large, even if it wouldn't be an MMO. Being an MMO only complicates things further, considering even basic 2D MMOs are a PITA to get working properly, and that's for people with experience. Sorry but this is doomed to fail. Not to mention that the chances of getting C&D'd if you DO get something working are larger than the chances of getting hired.

When you want to start game development of ANY KIND, there's one golden rule: start small. Then think of something even smaller, and go do that instead. You can always shelve your original plans and ideas for when you are ready for them, but believe me, from your post I'd say you are not.

I know, it isn't an easy task, i never said it would be, but even if it doesn't become an official game one could buy at gamestop or what-not, everywhere i go people look for a game that IS SAO, and all have been disappointed. I may only know mediocre java, some lua, and a little bit of C#, but i am a fast learner and when there is something i want, i will do anything to get it, within reason. I have already spent all of the past 5 days watching and reading non-stop tutorials on the functioning of UDK and the methods i can use for weapon animation, textures, sounds, implementing buildings, etc, stopping only for food, sleep and school, and i am getting the hang of it fairly fast.
Also, i have already made 3 games in the past; one java-based text-mmo similar to zork, but more advanced, incorporating magic, inventory, multiple weapons, randomly generated incidents in each section of the game, and more, and two 2-D games, one a run-and-gun zombie game, and the other a racing game where the goal was to avoid obstacles at ever-growing speeds. The java game was an assignment from my computer science class, where we had to make a game and i chose a text-based game. I got an A+ and most of the students in the class asked for a copy of the game as well, so i guess i did well. The other two were in my free time. The run-and-gun didn't make it far, but the racing game had 1800 downloads about a month after i made it. Sad thing is, it was several years ago and i don't even remember what the hell it was or where to find it anymore...

To Black-Ice... what is wrong with SAO? Even if you don't like the anime, you have to admit that the idea of living in a huge virtual world where you can do anything you could in the real world and more... its overwhelming, incredible! One day that will be reality you know, just not today...

Anyway, i still hope someone takes interest...

I liked it better when it was called The Matrix. Or the Lawnmower Man. Or Total Recall. Or Star Trek, what with the Holodeck and all. Etc. etc.

Point being, the idea's not so novel. It takes more than that to be worthwhile.

Oh, that at least is a fair bit better than most people who come on here and ask for help with making a game. Still, I firmly believe a project like this is not something you can just get up and do. The problem here is mostly one about scale. Creating those "boring Japanese" SAO games can take years for a large team of experienced people who do this for a day job, and what you're proposing here is a project far larger than that. It's not impossible, but it would take years and a very large, talented and experienced team to even consider pulling it off.

That only happens in the SAO arc tho.
I disagree

SAO arc - Everyone
Fairy Games - Asuna
GGO arc -Kirito makes his own freaking game and gets trapped again
And I'm sure it happens again

I understand, really i do. But, if you don't mind me putting it out there, there are tons of games out there that are made by a single person. They aren't perfect, there are flaws, and maybe their not Crysis 3 graphics, or have smooth transitions between actions like mirrors edge, or mega-interactive maps, like battlefield 4, where i think they could implement an animation to take a shit and people would slip if they stepped in it... but they are still good and fun and people enjoy them!

Thats what i want out of this project, publication and money would just be a bonus i want, but don't expect. And the team aspect of all this, thats why i'm here, looking for people who have learned or are willing to learn to make a game!

You can't use UDK for games with a commercial angle without a license, SAO is copyrighted and you might get a cease and desist, networking is a bit*h, running servers costs money and you picked a Ferrari as your first project. Start small, grab an open source 2D engine, there's plenty of those. Your expectations are Unreal-istic, pun intended.

You know Java, right? You said you had made a simple 2D JavaScript game before.
If that's the case, try to make a simple Android game similar in complexity to the Zombie Cubes game a fellow user here made.
Heck, it could even be SAO-related if it's free. If you really want to, you can use Unreal for it. Just try and keep it simple and free(at most ad-supported).
Only when you've built a reputation of making a quality SAO game, Namco would think to greenlight a bigger MMO project.
And, as all temps here have told you, start small.
For example, a hack'n'slash game where Kirito automatically goes to the right and faces different random obstacles at random times(for example, a monster that can be beaten by 2-3 QTEs or a choice between staying at the inn and spending money and time or skip healing). Heck, even just slashing monsters would be fun enough if you think of a right mechanic behind it.
Just don't think you can make the real SAO before its predicted release(around 2020). :P

Nice pun! Thought i'd hear it tbh, i just didn't expect it so soon XD

Anyway, yes i know that UDK requires a license if you want to officially publish. And yes i know that servers would be a lot of money to run.

Which is why, if my logic isn't flawed somewhere, publishing would help tremendously! If the game were to somehow be published, then the money earned could go towards servers, and the license fee is only $100, i could cover that if i had reason to believe publishing was possible.

I understand your other point though, i should start in 2D and work up to 3D, but i have used 2D engines before, and as odd and bullshit-like this may sound, i actually found 3D engines EASIER!! Honestly, i don't know why, but when i make things in 3D, it comes out so much better and so much faster than if i made the same thing in 2D form...

Also, i understand that im picking a 'Ferrari' as my first ever real game, but i don't exactly plan on making the game head-on! I take small things that i want to make, learn how they work, alter, compare, etc, and do them seperate from the game

Example, before i saw your message, i was making, animating, and texturing my first test weapon. I will continue to make, test, compare, edit, and add/remove weapons into the game when i am satisfied or dissatisfied with its final form. This is how i operate.

Don't think i am just defending myself from the facts your giving me, i am not. I am just trying to put it out there that i do my research because i want to be successful. I understand the ups and downs of the roller coaster i may or may not endure over however long, and i am OK with that. SAO is an incredible thing, it deserves a game that lives up to its name, even if it is a plain old fan-made game made on the laptop of an 18-year old nutcase... if people like it, and play it, and want to keep playing it, then my job is complete and i am happy with that!

A MMO takes quite an investment, that's why few MMOs really try anything different. Investors want it to do the same as something that's already been proven to make money. Not saying it can't be done, but you'd either need a lot of well seasoned developers that are just helping out of the kindness of their heart or you need far more money than most people will see in their lifetime to pay the devs with. Not to mention marketing, servers, and any other hidden costs that might crop up during development time.

Also, I don't think you'd be able to come up with a netcode that would have SAO fast paced style gameplay and be reliable unless you only want it for people with very expensive connections. Especially in the US, our connections are still built upon very old technology that needs overhauled.

Not saying you should give up hope on something like this, but you should probably start with something small, build yourself up to a point where your MMO is a realistic goal.

Publishing the game would require owning the rights to SOA which you obviously don't own. On top of that, a $100 does not cover the license for UDK, if it did, all contemporary devs would use it instead of spending thousands on their own engines. Listen, I'm not kidding, the project you are proposing requires a fully staffed studio with financial backing, this is not something you can do with a bunch of n00bs found on an internet forum. I admire the tenacity, but don't bite more than you can chew and forget about publishing stuff you don't own the rights for. Make a small-scale 2D free homebrew - that's managable. Maybe a small Unity project, sure. MMO powered by UDK? My sceptic sense is tingling.

You don't have a god damn clue what you're even talking about and I feel extremely embarrassed for you for making this thread.

This is just another sad joke that seems to pop up every so often. Some kid with no real experience wants to recruit a team to make their own dream come true with very little actual work likely to ever come from them because they're freaking useless and uneducated. Never going to happen ever.

If you actually had a clue what it would take to make a fully-fledged MMO, you'd never have made such a stupid thread. So it's pretty clear you have done 0 research on this topic and have no practical education in the field.

This is an EoF thread if I ever did see one.
