Irrational Games emerged back in 1997, founded by Ken Levine, Jon Chey, and Rob Fermier. The studio co-developed System Shock 2 to critical acclaim and spoiled pants, and since then has produced a variety of titles, from Freedom Force to SWAT to Bioshock. Their latest release came last year with Bioshock Infinite.

So, what's next for the acclaimed studio?

Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one. And working with the incredible team at Irrational Games is indeed the best job I’ve ever had. While I’m deeply proud of what we’ve accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we’ve done before. To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience.

I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it. I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition.

...In time we will announce a new endeavor with a new goal: To make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.

Talk about a bio-complete surprise.

But... yeah, that's quite a bombshell. Irrational Games is downsizing and handing over the reins of the Bioshock franchise to 2K, even after Bioshock Infinite's sales success. One can only speculate if this has anything to do with the game's drawn out development cycle, which saw it delayed, dropping multiplayer features, scrapping/rearranging entire story elements, and (supposedly) going massively over budget. After an experience like that, it'd be easy to imagine why he might need a break and/or Take Two might want them cut down.

If only they just called it "Skyoshock." All of these problems could have been avoided.

After the release of the last bit of Infinite DLC, it seems that the future of the Bioshock franchise will be in the hands of other studios. Then again, seeing how Bioshock 2 worked out (and what Infinite ended up as), maybe that's not such a bad thing after all.

That's really some serious news.
Bioshock was such a great quality franchise. There even theory videos around YT showing that floating and underwater cities were possible at the time the games play in.
I really hope 2K is going to keep that quality and that Irrational Games won't get forgotten.

Oh wow, this is a complete surprise. :O :(
I haven't even started the Burial at Sea DLC yet, and I bought it when it came out at full price because I love Ken's brain that much.

I hope he goes onto making something other than FPS'es though, the actual shooting parts of infinite felt the most tedious, but I love the story and characters.

I'd like to see what comes of their relation with 2K after this. Bioshock Infinite was a serious letdown and decidedly average game for me.

What the frick is going on??

First Rune Factory and Lufia, then Zero Escape and now Bioshock.

The gaming world is dying....

This seems no more brutal than any other year.

It is a luxury goods market with a main revenue derived from heavy initial investment and subject to the notoriously fickle whims of the public after it is out.

I disagree, the people who buy games are just as fickle as the people who buy movies or music. It's the entertainment industry....in terms of investment an AAA game has nothing on a AAA Movie

also R.I.P Rune Factory, you shall never be the same :(

This is good news.
You cannot milk a cow to much - and I think this is a smart move by Irrational Games.
It could've gone better like Santa Monica or Naughty Dog who focused their sights on new areas
as with Last of Us and soon-to-come The order: 1886. But I believe the parted game designers/crew
will find new areas to explore to create new fun adventures for us :) - the players .

@K3Nv2 Snow Day is pretty fun. My only bitch would be the camera controls, when you move around, say down, you have to move the right stick left or right to get camera to turn and get your view, other than that I like it so far.

From what people say pvp isn't even worth it
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.

Toilet paper is considered the money, you collect and buy stuff with TP, kinda funny. Graphics are def better than the other games tho, I think they used Unity 5 engine.

I bet most people at the time still watched it in black and white
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Xdqwerty, Many of them did before colour television was common.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Likely because black and white TV was in-expensive.

  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
It certainly wasn't inexpensive it cost the same as a new car back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
How much did a 1965 color TV cost?

For example, a 21-inch (diagonal) GE color television in 1965 had an advertised price of $499, which is equal to $4,724 in today's dollars, according to the federal government's inflation calculator.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@K3Nv2, take into consideration how economy was back then
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Yeah that's why they listed inflation rates
