Guys - always been a wii man but with the price of second hand 360's being fairly low in the UK at the moment I am thinking about picking one up in order to potentially mod it and play games off of an external USB HDD.

Any specific 360 model I should be looking at getting?

Also as with the Wii and the soft mod that I've done many times - is there anything similar for the 360 as I'm not very confident with soldering...

Many thanks in advance for any guidance/pointers received

MrD ;)

Early Slim or late phatty (MFR dates between 2009-2010) are the best.
Get an Xkey if you want to play games off off an external HDD.
And no, as you hopefully have read in me sticky, there's NO softmod for the 360 and there never will be.

Drive firmware flashing is softmodding...
It may be more complicated than modding a Wii, but you are not permanently attaching a hardware device to your 360 and the only modding being done is in the software of the drive. Also there is no soldering required so the OP should be able to do it quite easily.

However rather than an XKey I would recommend a R-JTAG for more functionality, installation is rather complex though.

Technically it can be seen as softmodding yes.
However it's not the kind of softmod you'd expect that allows you do do stuff like the old Xbox and Wii.

R-JTAG isn't for slims and I don't think OP will be interested in homebrew.
Not only that but it takes away Live functionality.
Unless you invest in some expensive hardware and know what you're doing with it.

Looked into the Xkey option and thats definitely the route for me to go down.

Thanks

No problem ;]

I was more thinking of XBLA games, but homebrew is a plus too.

Due to my level/confidence with the installation of items to the console - upon a little more research the Xkey is defo the way for me to go. The R-JTAG looks a little to complex for me.

Cheers for the reply ;)
