what I don't understand and maybe someone can explain it to me cuz i'm a noob, but why can apple devices be jailbroken in a few days/weeks. Yet the 3DS has been years and no hack?

Since apple is one of the richest countries in the world, you would think they would have better security than nintendo. Is it just because there are a ton more people working on iphone hacking than 3ds hacking? Or is nintendo really better?

i think part of it is the iphone is designed to communicate with a comp over usb which allows people to work on initial hacks without needing really complicated hardware setups and still untethered jbs for iphones take a while to get

OK, looks like I'll try a Gateway? Not followed the scene for a while, I take it the tech has developed, and there's currently no other way. What fast and cheap U.S. seller would people recommend?

I'm happy with my purchase from Modchipsdirect. 70 hours on Gateway and counting. Also, fast and cheap is generally mutually exclusive.

Well at 10% off right now I'd say that's cheap enough :) But those guys only take Visa. Is there a US seller that accepts MasterCard?

Also... The site doesn't say that the Gateway comes with the DS cart, it just mentions a white and grey cart. What's up with that?

First of all, don't pay attention to that 11% off. $80 is a standard for most stores, so they're just trying to trick you. A lot of stores do that. Second, I have no idea what they mean by white and grey carts. Maybe Gateway changed the color, I have no idea. But the fact that the package comes with two different carts leads me to believe it's the same thing.

They're talking about the color of the plastic of the cartridges themselves, whereas Gateway and anyone else that mentions it differentiates each cart by the color of the sticker (blue and red). If Gateway changed the color, they'd probably mention it somewhere on their website (http://gateway-3ds.com/).

Ah, we should pay attention to the sticker colour! Gotcha.

Anybody know of a good US seller that takes Mastercard, or maybe even a South East Asian store that offers an English website?

DS era and flashme with the original DS were NOT easy...maybe when you first got introduced into it the Slot 2 era was taking off and all you needed to do to play DS games with a PassMe was to convert it with the right instructions...and sometimes a firmware update

The "ds era" wasn't always so simple. After slot 1 cards it became a lot easier and especially so with flashcards that could run clean roms without issue.

As for the eshop it's the US one but the thing is it may not be useful to you if you don't have a US/canadian/(mexican?) credit card, unless of course you get prepaid nintendo cards but stores that ship them always put a fairly large markup to get good profit.

For 3ds games there is the gateway which is being released but yeah, at the cost of not being able to play any games past 4.5 (may be possible but not likely I'd say), for some ~$80 is worth it to play all the current games. Thing is if you update past 4.5 then that's it for the thing.

That is an issue, I'm willing to purchase prepaid Nintendo cards for people overseas for cost plus a little extra for my time and Paypal fees.

All in all for a 1st generation flash cart the Gateway is a fricking dream. The GB/GBC carts were a pain as I had several of them and it took a while to get multi-rom and you had to write them thru the LPT port. It took forever to flash and often would bomb part way thru. I finally got a good setup with a certain PC and LPT settings but it was a real pain compared to writing an SD card with winimage. Slot 2 DS was also a bit of a pain....I did wifime and then flashme and the first DS card was a major pain that needed patched roms and was one game per flash. When Supercard released their PC patcher for the supercard SD then things got pretty nice but even then in the early days you had to save your games to a DS cart with the proper size eeprom and use a tool like rain to backup and restore game saves...eventually supercard got save game patching and then it was prettty slick and I still use that cart in my DS lite to this day as it has no OS to boot and runs both GBA and DS games.

Gateway has come a long way in a short time.....I have had 0 problems with game saves and the system works transparently. I have played Castlevania, DKCR, and Etrian OD4 thru completly with no freezes or game save issues. It seems like as long as you got a decent unit shipped to you and use fast enough (real class 4 or better) sd cards you will have no problems. Gateway has already provided region spoof and version spoof. Out of the hundreads of dumped games out there right now you can't play 2 that I am aware of which is Animal Crossings and MH4.

I am confident we will get more from Gateway and in reality one of two things will happen. Gateway will get supported well enough and continue to bring more features and future roms to their device, or they won't get supported well enough and will fold and then as always happens their knowledge will get leaked and either (or both) other flash companies will make something better or the scene will continue supporting the gateway as far as the hardware can go. Look at how retro gamefan has exetned the life of a lot of early slot 1 cards. I am still using a m3zero with every DS rom released.

So I would say for $80 the Gateway is a bargain.....you get lots to play now and I bet in the coming months it will be supporting even newer roms.....also lets remember not all publishers in the past used AP and sometimes even the same game comes out in different regions and will have AP or not.

One thing to remember though is there is no guarentee anything past 4.5 will be exploited any time soon or ever.....nothing past 3.55 was ever exploitable on PS3 and 7371 was the only firmware on x360 that could be jtag hacked. So I would say if you think you might want to use gateway or a future product don't update past 4.5 until more is known. Right now only two games require 5.1 (ML Dream team and MH4J) unless you want eShop titles or can't live without new spotpass features.

Yeesh. My posts must be invisible or something.

I ended up ordering with Real Hot Stuff in Hong Kong, as they were the only asian seller that had an English website. They were cheaper too, at $75. And they took mastercard. Here's hoping it arrives safely!
