Go for Rebug 4.41.2. You can install it from XMB on top of OFW 3.55 by following the guide below:

1- Install Rebug 4.41.2 from XMB:
Download Rebug 4.41.2 from Rebug's website, verify the md5 hash, rename the PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP, put it on your FAT32 formatted flash drive in PS3\UPDATE, go to System Update and Update via Storage Media. Make sure there's NO original game disk in the drive and that you DON'T Update via Internet or else you would risk installing OFW higher than 3.55!

2- Enable QA:
Install Rebug Toolbox from Package Manager, launch it under Games, go to Utilities and enable QA. This is to ensure easier and safer downgrading.

You need multiMAN 4.40.00 to be compatible with it.

Installed Rebug, installed Rebug Toolbox, enabled QA, installed multiMAN, and everything went fine.

One Q though, I haven't installed any of the BR games to the HDD yet, but for some reason I cannot figure out how to just launch the game disc. Every time I hit start, it just takes me back to XMB... (And the game is Red Dead Redemption GOTY.)

Are you trying to launch it from the XMB or from mM? When you mount a game from mM, it doesn't start directly, it exits to the XMB, then you have to start the mounted game from the disk icon on the XMB.

As a precaution (just in case a disc update or anything) I tried to launch it via mM and it did exit to XMB... I wasn't sure that I was then supposed to launch it again in XMB (I thought something went wrong).

(edit) Since I wasn't sure what was happening, I also installed RRDGOTY disc and then tried to run it from mM (I also took the disc out). It also brought me back to XMB and then it had a PS3 game disc which turned to RRDGOTY. It then proceeded to install the games' install data.
Is this normal? Or am I not doing something right?

Yes that's perfectly normal, this is how it's supposed to work.

I wouldn't worry about disc update, you're currently on 4.41 CFW and the latest OFW is 4.41 and I doubt any games require 4.41 yet. It will be a while before games requiring 4.41 or higher get released. You'll be fine as long as you're always spoofed to the latest OFW version.

You could also delete the PS3_UPDATE folder from your HDD rips, this is the folder which contains the OFW version required by the game. All games work perfectly without it, so it would be good practice for preventing accidental updates and saving HDD space.

Oh okay. I didn't realize that mM actually mounts the game and then we have to launch again in XMB (a little cumbersome but not bad).

Good to know about the disc updates... probably not until GTAV.:) And maybe not even then.

Thanks for the tip about PS3_UPDATE (that was trippy navigating in a mini-Windows-like environment to delete that folder).
BTW, is there any way to disable that Windows start up sound when launching mM? I found the location to turn off the music but not start up sound.
And is there a mM preferred method for upgrading the internal HDD or should I just do the standard way?

Use Filezilla and mM's FTP Server, it's easier to manipulate files and folders on the internal from your PC this way.

Regarding the startup sound, I think you can delete the file somewhere, but I'm not sure where. Just mute your TV when you start mM :P

mM doesn't have anything to do with upgrading the HDD. You have to backup to an external with the PS3's built in backup utility on the XMB (everything will be backed up except your trophies), replace the HDD, it will ask you to re-install the system software, put Rebug 4.41.2 on your flash drive and re-install it, then restore your backup.

I wanted to chime in to say there's an option in mM for direct game booting in the game settings.
I'm installing a game right now so I can't check but, isn't it under each games' load options?

I'll hunt for that startup sound. ;) I did kinda dig that Indian (?) music it defaulted to but not while I'm trying to figure stuff out.
Backup, OK - via XMB.
As far as reinstalling Rebug, do it just as you said originally, right?
BTW - have either of you guys gone on the PSN store with this version of Rebug? I wanna buy something but don't wanna get banned all the same...

That's right, but I don't recommend it because of the fact that it doesn't work on most of the games. It just adds to the factors that you should consider when troubleshooting a game that might not be working. It will also confuse you because some of your games will boot directly and in some others mM will quit to the XMB. So you might get used to a game that is booting directly for a while and then move to another game that doesn't boot directly and think something is wrong when mM exits to the XMB. It's better if you get used to the fact that mM exits to the XMB when you mount a game.

Some users even forget this is what's supposed to happen when they upgrade their CFW. Even though they've been using mM on 3.55 and they know this is what happens, when they upgrade to 4.xx, they start complaining that it's not working and it's exiting to the XMB and they forget that they're supposed to start the game after it's mounted. Believe me I've had many such users and the reason they get confused is because of the fear that something is not going to work when they upgrade, so as soon as something seems not to be working, they think it's not working.

So better to get used to the fact that mM exits to the XMB when you mount a game.

Yeah I usually mute my TV when I'm playing around with settings or FTPing.

I don't connect to PSN, I've only connected once while still on 3.55 just to test if it connects and that was it. It's kind of like a shot in the dark, you have to try your luck and expect to get banned. Good practice would be not to run any homebrew (like mM or Rebug Toolbox) when connected. Only connect when you have to and disconnect immediately when you're done. Disable auto sign in and don't save your password to prevent unintentional sign ins. Try connecting after you're in the game instead of before starting the game and disconnect after exiting the game to prevent running homebrew unintentionally from the XMB while connected (you can't run homebrew while in a game). And the most important thing, never Play Black Ops 2 online no matter what, this will get you banned instantly.

That's fine with me (especially if it helps keep compatibility higher, I'm good).

I've heard that about Blops2 but I don't play games online. I just want to be able to buy some PSN games like the Hard Corps: Uprising and stuff like that. Even shopping on PSN, I guess I should just expect to be banned and worst case I am, I get a 2nd PS3 to get PSN games.

(edit) - Have you run GTAIV:Complete Edition? I'm currently trying to get it to load (internal) but I've read you need to let it wait to load for 10~15 minutes....

You should be fine if you're just buying stuff from the store, just sign out as soon as you finish and don't run any homebrew while connected.

Yeah I've played GTA IV Complete, it takes some time to install the first time if I remember correctly.

Store - OK I'll give it a try (worst case, I know).

GTAIVCE - did you install the main game first or either of the sub games? I waited for about 10 minutes, maybe I gotta wait for 15 or so...

I can't remember what I did exactly. Check your HDD activity light and keep waiting as long as it's flashing.

I was thinking the same thing. It does seem to stop flashing though which leads me to believe that it's not gonna happen.
On the subject, maybe I should/could do the game update? Though through mM it's not letting me.

mM's update server is down and is likely to stay down for the time being. But you can download game updates on your PC from https://a0.ww.np.dl.playstation.net/tpl/np/<TITLEID>/<TITLEID>-ver.xml (replace TITLEID by the BLES/BLUS of your game.

What happens exactly when you start the game? Does it black screen or what?
