So I've been thinking about softmodding my PS3 for a while now but I'm not really sure on some things as it definitely seems harder than the Wii softmod.

I have a slim CECH-2500A 3.55 OFW so from everything I've read, it should be relatively easy to mod.
I want to be able to rip my games to the HDD and play them from the HDD and still be able to buy stuff on PSN. Is this going to be possible? From what I've read, it may be hard to do so.

I've seen there are different versions of softmodding or loaders(?), Rogero, Kmeaw, etc and so many guides. And I have some older but many newer that probably need 4.x firmware.
What recommendations or advice can anyone offer?

Thanks! :)

I don't know a lot about the PS3 scene but iirc, the Rebug firmware has PSN access.
Just continue to update the CFW as soon as you can and you should be "safe" on PSN.
That along with Multiman stealth (iirc)

However, if you do end up hacking it, you shouldn't complain when Sony bans your PS3.
Personally, I'd go for an ODDE (requires your BD key iirc but not entirely sure)
That way you keep your PS3 stock, yet still be able to play backups.
Or get a 2nd hand PS3 and hack that one or use that one for PSN ;]

Well okay, even with Rebug, if I'm going on to the PSN store and trying to buy stuff, there still is potential for a banning I guess. Oh well.

Taking PSN out of the equation, what firmware do people recommend for ease of use and useful features?

Go for Rebug 4.41.2. You can install it from XMB on top of OFW 3.55 by following the guide below:

1- Install Rebug 4.41.2 from XMB:
Download Rebug 4.41.2 from Rebug's website, verify the md5 hash, rename the PUP to PS3UPDAT.PUP, put it on your FAT32 formatted flash drive in PS3\UPDATE, go to System Update and Update via Storage Media. Make sure there's NO original game disk in the drive and that you DON'T Update via Internet or else you would risk installing OFW higher than 3.55!

2- Enable QA:
Install Rebug Toolbox from Package Manager, launch it under Games, go to Utilities and enable QA. This is to ensure easier and safer downgrading.

You need multiMAN 4.40.00 to be compatible with it.

That was really clear and I'd never found that page before, thanks!!

So once I have the Rebug installed, I need MultiMan for things like, ripping my games to the HDD, but, what else is MultiMan good for?
I'm so used to USBLGX on Wii that I think the PS3 side of things is going to be more manual, right? It's not as straightforward as: put disc in, rip prompt, disc rips, can play off HDD, is it??

I'm not sure what USBLGX is because I don't have any experience with a Wii, but it is as straightforward as put disc in, open mM, rip disc, mount game off HDD, exits to XMB, launch mounted game.

mM basically is a multifunctional tool for the PS3, the main functionalities are a Backup Manager, File Manager (mMOS) and FTP Server which gives you FTP access to your PS3's internal HDD.

I've found a bunch of different versions of mM,
CEX = retail/consumer fw, DEX = debug/developer firmware (fw), and "stealth" I guess is supposed to go unnoticed (by PSN??).
Which should I be running? I read on your ps3hax post that, a Rebug lite is like a CEX version, so I'm guessing either the mM CEX or Stealth, right?
And, is there any reason I should be running a REX version of Rebug instead of lite/CEX?
Thanks again!

Not unless you're interested in the DEX side of it which gives you access to debug settings and allows you to emulate your broken BD Drive on a USB flash drive. DEX allows you to RTE as well.

Okay. So that mM with the Rebug 4.41.2 lite (and directions above) I should be set.

Any other software recommendations or settings to use in mM?

The only thing that I can think of is that some games might boot to a black screen. Those games would need the BD Mirror setting in mM turned ON and you would need to start them from the Disk icon with any original game disk inserted.

Some games work discless and some others don't, I usually keep an old original game disk inside so that I don't have to keep inserting it and removing it.

I don't think I need that stuff. Can I switch to the DEX/REX version simply by "updating" via storage media to the DEX/REX version?

Are there any major games that you know of that require it? If I leave BD Mirror on for all games, even those that don't need it, are there any adverse effects leaving it on?
And for disc-less working or not, the old original game disk, it probably doesn't matter which one, right?

Portal 2 for sure required it. It was strange gave me a yellow triangle with a red exclamation point when I booted it. You turn on BD Mirror for each game individually in the game settings IIRC.

Doesn't matter what game disc it is. I have NFL 06 in mine. Just be sure to take out the disc when updating. As I've heard the PS3 takes whatever update from the disc before it takes it from a USB Flash drive.

As for the other question. I'll leave that to mschumacher69 as I haven't a clue.

Thanks~ I did want to get Portal 2 when the Amazon sales hit so that's good to know.
Though I do wonder, does the disc-less compatibility ever get improved? I'm kinda thinking no just because I don't see anything like the Wii cIOS in PS3 hacking. Might be wrong though~

Yes you can switch between different Rebug CFWs by installing them on top of each other. QA needs to be enabled if you are downgrading though (i.e. installing Rebug 4.30.2 on top of Rebug 4.41.2).

The latest Tomb Raider for example requires BD Mirror. BD Mirror is not a universal setting, it is a "per game" setting, so you turn in on or off on a game to game basis and turning it on for 1 game does not turn it on for other games.
That's right, any original game disk would do. For example, I keep my PS3 Move setup disk inside.

Yes discless is constantly improving. Dean (mM's developper) released a new payload a while back which improved discless support, 80% of games that didn't work discless now do. But there are still a few that don't, basically black screen games that require BD Mirror. Initially, black screen games couldn't be played. Then Dean improved the payload which allowed them to be played with BD Mirror but from an external hdd only. Now they work from internal as well. So it's constantly improving.

OK, per game. And for a 4.30.2 downgrade, since you recommended to have QA on, so that should be safe.

The last thing I can think of before doing the hack is, I probably only have a few saves on my PS3 I'd want to keep; do they stay as is when doing the hack or do I need to do a back-up of the save files or NAND at any point?

Thanks again guys. I'll hit up the thread again tomorrow after some sleep and going through the actual process listed above.

Oh and great to hear about the disc-less improvement. :)

You should update the 360 to newest dash before RGHing it yes. But not a big deal if you don't, you can install new dash/avatar updates after. It's just easier to do it auto online before, instead manual offline after.

@BigOnYa I wanted to ask you about your experience with seeing south park. Most of the people a bit younger like my younger brother and cousins that are a few younger than me that saw kids found south park funny because of the curse words, kids at school, that seemed like liking the show on a very basic level.

I could not quite have a in depth discussion of the show.

How was it for you? As an adult. What did you find the most interesting part about it. Did you relate to the parents of the kids and their situations. Was it satires, the commentary on society. The references on celebrities' and pop culture.
