Well that was quick. Looks like the new official firmware version is now at 4.40, which means that I can't play games online anymore. I first noticed when playing "Catherine" and trying to go online about trophies. It said I would have to update. Naturally I will just wait until an update to Rogero is released, but it's a shame that I only got a few days of online access before it stopped working.

Netflix doesn't work either, which is outrageous in and of itself since I pay Netflix - not Sony - for that service. Of course, I can also watch Netflix on my Wii so it's not a really big deal, but it bites because I just today bought a BD remote and configured it to work with my TV too.

Interestingly my PSP is still able to remove play the PS3 - even over an internet connection. I would imagine though that someone who didn't already set it up to work wouldn't be able to without updating.

I wonder how long it will take people to find a way around it. Is this a regular occurrence, or an "every few months" kinda thing?

I'm perfectly happy with that. Played a few games of MW2 today.

Tons of modders. Back to back games with people floating, and other stuff. I figure it's. Either online, or mods.

RGH/JTAG 360's also don't have access to XBL.

I don't find it odd from Sony anyway to block CFW users on PSN.
PSN isn't mandatory.

Besides, you either hack your PS3 and get all the benefits of it and lose PSN, or go fully legit and have PSN.

or duel nand

Dual NANDing a 360 has the best of both worlds yes.
However this is only possible with a glitchchip and requires sufficient knowledge about making sure you don't mess it up.
Besides you can't use any thing JTAG/RGH related materials on a Live NAND.
So it basically defeats the purpose of a fully hacked machine.

Dual NAND is great for people that want XBLA/XBLindie/DLC/Xbox1 and homebrew yet also want 360 games to play online (with either an Xkey or flashed DVD)
If one wants to play games on Live and nothing more then that then I strongly suggest getting an Xkey or the DVD drive flashed.

More importantly, how many newer games will require 4.40 and will be unplayable on CFW 4.30s? You will more likely see EBOOT fixes to address this before a working spoofer to get PSN access on a CFW4.30.

My only issue with not having access to PSN is that I can't use online features that really should have nothing to do with PSN. Netflix, for example, shouldn't even go through Sony. That would be like if Acer decided that they didn't like what I was doing with my laptop and so blocked me from accessing my access to third party content. I have no problem with Sony blocking access to playing games online, but they take it way too far. Sony does not own nor developed the Netflix. Unlike a game that is played online, Sony doesn't have to devote any of it's servers to it's operation. For that matter, I don't like the idea of Sony monitoring any sort of internet traffic not related to it's established interests in the products it develops and maintains. I heard about a Netflix app for a CFW, but I can't seem to find a central website about it and if it would work with the latest CFW.

Aside from being able to access online content like that my only other concern is that you have to be connected to PSN to access the remote play feature over the internet. Although a brief test of mine showed that it still worked, I haven't tested it from an out of home location, and I haven't tested it to see if it can still turn the console on by remote. While in this case it connects through PSN, why can't I just set up a personal cloud to use it with? I mean, all the PSN is doing is providing a security layer so that no unauthorized person accesses it, which isn't very secure considering how many times PSN gets hacked. And of course, all product support eventually gets discontinued anyway.

A secondary concern is that I can't purchase DLC, but I can live without DLC.

More importantly, how many newer games will require 4.40 and will be unplayable on CFW 4.30s? You will more likely see EBOOT fixes to address this before a working spoofer to get PSN access on a CFW4.30.

hmm. Good point. Well, I doubt any already released discs would have that requirement on it, but I wouldn't doubt it if every title that is soon to be released will be unplayable on CFW. For games already released, well, what if they release a game update that puts the requirement on?

.......

I had one scare earlier, BTW. Although Rogero makes it impossible to even accidentally update to an OFW through the system update, when I clicked PSN it said it was going to download the update for me and to press to continue. Naturally, I got up and turned the PS3 off by holding in the power button and everything was fine, but did try to slip an update in. What I don't understand is why it can see that it isn't updated when the system information is spoofed to say 4.40 already.

Youtube and other 3rd party applications on the 360 also go via XBLive.
Reason might be due to the control of what is going to be send to the console.

As a website might be packed with some exploit that crashes the console to exploit system vulnerabilities for example.

As for the rest.
I'm not part of the PS3 scene so I'm not commenting on it.

As for the PS3 updating.
Isn't there a setting which you can flip that actively blocks updates?
Dashlaunch for example ignores the standard $systemupdate folder on 360's to prevent accidental updates.
I'm sure the PS3 would also have a similar thing.
At least it would be logical.

That's still better than Xbox Live where (IIRC) you have to buy Gold in order to use Netflix, and then you need a Netflix subscription on top of that.

Good News: Looks like the update doesn't include changes to keys, so this won't be a long term issue :) Still, I'm inclined to want to find a less integrated copy of Netflix.

I have not had a chance to mod my Xbox 360 yet, but even unmodded as it is there is a reason I never watch Netflix on it: They charge to have access to it. (and, same thing, I don't like it.) On my Wii, however, Netflix works just fine. The thing is: The Wii is 480p, and my PS3 is 1080p. I can stream higher quality on the PS3. I'm not really convinced that there is any proprietary reason why they need that level of integration because older versions of Netflix wasn't part of PSN at all - in fact, you had to install it with an actual disc! No, I think they do it because they know that it would compel people to update more quickly.

I don't know. I'm still new to the PS3 scene myself. I do make a point to delete the update folders after backing up games, and it isn't possible to update to OFW with the system update in CFW. Maybe it was just a weird fluke?

It might be downloaded but blocked off from execution.
I would be more at ease if there was a similar thing to dashlaunch to aggressively block Sony DNS's.

But since I know next to nothing about the PS3 scene.
I don't really care much about it tbqh.

Exactly why I don't use it. I admit, at one time I did subscribe to gold exclusively for the streaming of Netflix. I was initially on the xbox bandwagon and even became a registered XNA developer. I made a few games in XNA that I never released (because they sucked, lol. Just for self teaching. The only programs I ever released with in Visual Basic, and that was a long time ago.) and then one day I noticed during a storm that I could not play the single player Indie games I bought. Turns out I have to be online to play single player games... and that was when I stopped buying things on Xbox Live, cancelled the Gold service, and bought a Wii. Shortly after I modded my Wii and that was my entry into the modding scene.

While online on CFW would be great, I would prefer it to be just for OFW consoles. This is simply because CFW usually makes cheats or mods possible which in turn can screw the online experience for the OFW that can't even enable cheats. Instead of PSN access being fiddled with, I'd love to see 3.55+ CFW without the need of 3.55 CFW in the beginning.

Oh no, Sony released an update which impedes playing your pirated games online! And you can't use Netflix either since you're in violation of Sony's Terms of Use when it comes to PlayStation Network as using a modified console is prohibited and PlayStation Network only works on the latest firmware which you could update to if you didn't have a modified console!

OUTRAGEOUS!

Here we go. A way to access PSN :) A shame it requires a computer on to work...

Wow, is anyone else feeling a little deja vu-ish right now? If this turns out to be an example of "history repeating itself," look for at least 4 more firmware updates from Sony every 4-6 weeks as every spoof, computer proxy and dns trick is attempted and blocked; culminating in a final and complete rewrite of the PSN ToS.

Don't even need those bypasses. REBUG already released an updated 4.40 spoofer, so yeah.

Throughout nearly the entire period in which 4.xx firmwares were created and PSN access was reobtained, I myself have continued to use PSN with no emails, no bans, nothing. I might be a special case though, since I share my account on another unmodified PS3, and the only times I ever go online are to play certain fighting games, download DLC, and use Netflix.
