Hacking Sony blocks online play yet again...

Don't even need those bypasses. REBUG already released an updated 4.40 spoofer, so yeah.

I installed this package, but it didn't work. I am still unable to use Netflix or purchase DLC. Is the spoofer incompatible with Rogero? I wish I could find an official project page for Rogero to see when they update...

Throughout nearly the entire period in which 4.xx firmwares were created and PSN access was reobtained, I myself have continued to use PSN with no emails, no bans, nothing. I might be a special case though, since I share my account on another unmodified PS3, and the only times I ever go online are to play certain fighting games, download DLC, and use Netflix.

I am the same way. I don't even play fighting games online. I only really play single player games. The only time I would go online with any console is to purchase DLC. You think Sony would be happy with someone wanting to actually spend money...

Scratch that. The spoofer works! The instructions just said to press "L1+cross", but I didn't realize at first that it created a new program under "games" that I had to activate it through. Now I can watch Netflix again, and I can finally get that Portal 2 DLC!

Speaking of Portal 2, and idea when it will be possible to play that discless? When I play without the Portal 2 disc inserted I get a yellow triangle with red exclamation mark.

Just be patient, iirc a while back (6 months ish) the LV0 keys were leaked, so even if they were to do something like a new PSN key, it would not take very long for someone to extract them. At this point, the PS3 is pretty much 100% hacked, all an update does is frustrate people for a short amount of time. Play something else in the meantime.

I had no idea the PS3 was 100% hacked... You mean I can go buy a PS3 from Walmart and hack it? Or will I be needing additional hardware and intricate knowledge for console with firmwares higher than 3.55?

Publicly you need to be on 3.55 or lower at some point because you need to extract keys from your PS3, and the hole to do that was closed after 3.55.

However once on 3.55 with your keys and other info extracted, there are higher-version CFWs you can upgrade to.

At least, from what I've read around here.

As far as I am concerned it won't be "100% hacked" until it is also possible (without hard mods) to backup PS2 games on at least a first generation console. Still, it's good to know how quickly their updates get circumvented.
You're better off playing PS2 games on... a PS2. Backwards compatibility on the PS3 is a jaggedy, buggy, upscaled mess. Then again, Sony did release PlayStation 2 Classics recently and the core of the "emulator" was already cracked, so soon enough you'll be able to play PS2 ISO's with ease on every PS3 console.

On new PS3 models, yes, it is very buggy. But the original PS3 consoles has the Emotion Engine Hardware. In other words, it's like having a physical PS2 inside the PS3. On my console they look at least as good as they did on the PS2 and I have never encountered a single bug. Additionally, having internal memory cards really is a nice feature. On newer consolers they took the emotion chip out and went an emulation route which means that the games were, well, not good.

I really REALLY hope that it would support the emotion engine. If it just plays them in software mode it would defeat the entire point of having an original PS3.

It was buggy and upscaled on all PlayStation 3's regardless of the PS2 hardware in them. The PS3 rendered the original image in the original PS2 resolution and then upscaled it to all hell causing a jaggedy, shitty mess. In later revisions of the firmware they added a filter but it did not help much - playing the games on a PS2 is still far superior.

Also, not all games were compatible. Most were, but not all:

Do people honestly assume that when they hack their PS3 they can access online play without any issues?
Lack of online is something users should be prepared for when using Custom Firmware - in fact, I was always a proponent of not connecting your PS3 to the PSN when running CFW at all. A constant life of ban evasion and firmware issues is not an interesting prospect when you could buy an E3Flasher and just Dual Boot - doing otherwise is risking getting your console flagged and subsequently banned altogether or getting your PSN/SEN account banned and thus losing all your content... or both. If you want to go online on your PS3, go online on official firmware.

Moreover, whining that you can't connect your PS3 to PSN when running CFW is sort of silly - it's a free service and you're breaking its terms of use. Sony as a company is in no way obliged to provide you with online services - it's not a part of the package, they're merely nice enough to do it for free rather than charge you for giving you the "opportunity" to play the games you've bought online. Let's put the emphasis on the bought part there.

No, I don't think anyone assumes that at all. In fact, it should be expected. The title of this thread might've mislead you a bit. The OP mentioned how Netflix becomes unusable without updating, which I too agree is a crock. Oh well, such are the ToS.

I have quite a few PS2 games and I have no problems whatsoever playing them on my PS3. The up-scaling you are talking about makes the games look BETTER. The feature that can make them look jagged is full screen mode, and that is OPTIONAL. Sometimes I play in full screen, sometimes I don't. The only real annoyance is that resizing is off by default and I haven't found a way to set it on by default. Same thing for scaling. I wish scaling would be on by default. In any case, if that is your only concern you don't HAVE to use that feature.

Here's an accurate comparison. I personally prefer playing them on the PS3 over the PS2, and since I have almost as many PS2 games as PS1 games there is no way you are going to convince me any differently because I actually play them on my PS3. Even without backups enabled, I play my PS2 games very often.

Yes. Yes I do.

So here's the thing... You could play PS2 games Full Screen causing a jaggedy mess... or in a tiny window preventing you to see fu*k all on the screen... Or you could play them Full Screen on the PS2 without either issue.

I see how you'd think playing PS2 games on the PS3 was in any way "better" than playing them on the PS2, uh-huh.

I don't "think". I "know". That is my honest preference. If you don't want to play around with the settings to turn off the features that you don't like that's your own business.

If you are playing on a PS3 that does not have PS2 hardware I would agree that it would be better to play on the PS2 in that case.

This is not a discussion about what you like and dislike though - this is all about whether playing PS2 games upscaled and filtered or in a tiny window on a PS3 is worse than playing them on an actual PS2, which it is. It's factually worse quality, deal with it.
Yes. Yes I do.
I should come to expect that kind of thinking from this website... I'll let you in on a little secret - if you completely disregard the regulations of a given service you will be denied the access to said service or otherwise penalized. The fact that you own a Sony console doesn't make you in any way "eternally entitled" to use PSN - you can use PSN as long as you follow its Terms of Use.

Factually speaking, you are wrong. It really depends on the game as to which setting looks best though, so if you can't be bothered to mess with the settings you might believe it isn't better. The fact remains: When I compare games between the PS2 and the PS3 and properly set them, I get better results on my PS3. Fact. I showed you a link to a side doing side by side comparisons, and some games do look better with different settings than others.

I'm not getting into a TOS argument with you. I paid Netflix for their service and I paid my ISP to use the connection. That's all that matters.

I also showed you a little link that proves it's the exact opposite on Full Screen as well as another tiny link which shows which games don't even work or work with issues on the PS3.

This is not about Netflix, this is about connecting to PSN. You can use Netflix on any device you want but keep in mind that your PS3 goes online via PSN and to connect to PSN you need to follow its Terms of Use. Netflix is in no way connected to your PS3 - it's a cross-platform service and you're not banned from it - you can use it on other devices but if you want to use it on your PS3, you have to be online via PSN and for that you need the latest firmware. Sucks.

It depends on WHICH console you own. DUh! I just played the game in that video yesterday (Final Fantasy X) and it looks infinitely better than what the video suggests. Furthermore, to actually get those video screen captures they would have to be using an emulator on a PC which means that they aren't even testing it on a real PS3 console. Even if they were, the video doesn't say WHICH PS3 console they are talking about. I'm sorry if you have a junk PS3 and/or a junk TV and/or don't know which settings look best, but don't take that out on me.

EDIT: There is also a different compatibility list depending on which PS3 console you are using. It's an absolute fact that PS2 games look and play differently on different PS3 consoles depending on the model.

I will at least completely agree with you in that newer PS3 consoles don't play PS2 games very well, which was exactly my point in hoping that when backups are enabled they can take advantage of the difference because I wouldn't want to play PS2 games that look as bad as that video suggests either.
