It's been a while since I used Neo Gamma and it was probably older version so the menus might have changed but the images that come up in google make me think there's a "region options" menu and that something like "force video" should be inside that and that you would just need to set it to NTSC assuming that the flag under your username is correct.

loading from a SD or USB drive is the way to go usually. Unless you get a really old Wii it most likely will simply be incapable of reading the DVD-R disk format (and even older ones are unable to read pretty much any OTHER burnt formats.)

Your first step, simplest answer is to run ModMii for Windows. It'll ask you a few questions about the Wii and then download automatically EVERYTHING you need to FULLY hack your Wii (or less hacked if you told it to, all up to you, just answer the questions ) and generate a very comprehensive step by step guide on what to do with it once it's done. It's very simple to understand and if you still don't get it, it usually links to youtube videos of how to do a lot of the steps so you can't go wrong.

There are several backup loader apps to choose from. The 4 that are most up to date and are still being updated are compared here

ModMii will suggest CFG and give WiiFlow as a second alternative but you can choose for yourself.

I'm not sure what WBFS is. It's a file system I gather, but would I want to 'make' backups for this format or just normal iso? :s

Btw, any way I can attach a Wii to my monitor via HDMI? I was planning component to HDMI convertor since Wii has a stock component cable. BUT, those things are damn expensive (almost as much as a Wii)!

WBFS was created as a partition format before Wii could support known partitions format (such as FAT32, NTFS or Ext).
This partition format is now obsolete.

Since the other partition format are compatible with Wii homebrew, a new format has been used for Wii games : the WBFS file format.
Instead of a full partition format with multiple games on it, the WBFS file is an image (a copy) of what a WBFS partition would be if it had a single game on it, and saved as a file on your FAT32 or NTFS partition.
drive:/wbfs/game name [GameID]/GameID.wbfs
(the [GameID] is used by usbloader to speed loading process).

The advantage of using the .wbfs format over the .iso format is the file size.
Single layer game's ISO are always 4.37GB because they contains dummy files to fill the disc fully.
when converting the iso to wbfs it keeps only the actual game data without the filled dummy files, making you save a lot of space!

Normal ISO files will be possible only on NTFS partition as you can't store files bigger than 4GB on FAT32
If a game is bigger than 4GB, the file is split in two files : .wbfs and .wbf1 (which is transparent for the game loader, it will act as if it was a single file).

When you dump your game disc using an USBloader, it will produce a .wbfs file.
If you want a .iso file, you can use another homebrew to dump your games : CleanRip.

I've come across ways to make an adapter between VGA and component cables in Google before. I think you have to make it yourself, though, because when I then decided to try to find someone selling one I came up with nothing.

So I recently installed DIOS MIOS for a friend and now Wii games will not load for him (black screen) though Gamecube now will. He used to use NTFS and obviously he moved to FAT 32, the game rips are 100% fine by me, we use identical HDDs and we both use USB Loader GX what could be his issue?

This will not work. You'd still need a scaler to scale the image to fit your monitor ( unless the monitor is 640x480 natively...)

And my monitor is a 2560x1440 resolution display... Wii gonna suck bad on it? I mean, I'll get another console if the graphics gonna be sh!t at that res (with upscaling too). Is Wii U hackable? Can I play backups on it?

You can only hack the part that acts like a old Wii and play Wii backups on it. The normal mode (Wii U mode) is not hacked publicly yet.

If not, I may be able to borrow a non-motion plus wiimote just for the softmodding part. So can I at least use the homebrew channel and a usb loader (cfg usb loader or wiiflow) using my wiimote plus? PLEASE HELP!

You will need an old wiimote. Once you get to installing priiloader, it will not recognize the new wiimote plus.

I tried using NeoGamma and no luck. I checked the error online and basically found out any wii made after 2009 has a drive that cannot read burnt copies of games... I just got this in 2013, heh. Ehh, I just ordered a usb hdd online. Much easier. Thanks for the help.

afternoon everyone,

im having a small problem with wiisx. it isnt responding to my controller at all. i tried on both a wii classic controller and a gamecube controller, both nintendo brand and nothing. i see the controllers being recognized by the wiisx on its home page but when i load up a game (im using it on final fantasy tactics which is supported according to the wiki) the controls dont work at all and im stuck at the main menu

any tips for a noob?

I have a wii with 4.3U that I softmoded back in december.
Bootmii is running as an IOS
I've backed up my nand to the SD card
I'm using usbloader gx to play my backed up games without any problems.
I have backed up my SD card

I followed guides to do the softmod and never really learned much about things and how they work. For the last week or two I've been reading and exploring to learn more about how all this stuff works and what else I can do with my softmoded wii.

I would like to clean out any unneeded files from my SD card and start customizing my system menu to my liking. The problem I'm having is there is so much information out there and much of it is years old that I'm not confident in it's accuracy.

What is the bare minimum files that must be on the SD card in order for everything to work?

If I remove both the SD card and USB drive and power up the wii it boots to the system menu and the system works as expected.
Holding down the reset button while powering up will give me the priiloader menu and it works just fine.
I can launch the homebrew channel but have no apps listed.
USB loader tries to load but fails.
These are understandable and I'm only bringing them up to describe the state of my system.

One other question. I purchased a couple classic nintendo games from the nintendo store and downloaded them to the SD card. Is there a way to transfer and play them to the USB drive?
