Trying to hack a friend's PS3SS and after a little researching and failed attempts, I read that it can't load backups. Is that just for PS3 games or can anything be done with it at all?

It's lower than 3.55. I tried updating it with cfw and original fw. Both times it said the data was corrupted.

You must me mistaken, super slim PS3 will not have that low of a firmware installed. My PS3 slim came with 3.50 official firmware, 2 YEARS AGO.

Is that just for PS3 games or can anything be done with it at all?
There is something you can do with it, use it as a door stop.

I might have been thinking 3 instead of 4. My bad. So then no one's hacked it? (I want to hack it for emulators and homebrew (and you know it) No need for snide, unhelpful remarks.) Thanks for all your help. >.>

For now ps3 that had pre instaled fw >3.60 can't be hacked this includes all 3000 model and all super slims. But soon there is going to be a solution for all models. For anyone whose intention is only piracy (for homebrew i dont think there is going to be a solution soon :( )

Do you mean Cobra and 3k3y? I still wonder how they are going to dump the drive key on Slim and Super Slim. Without drive key it is not going to work.

I've read that it requires soldering to get the keys, but as Originality said: it's just rumours for now, just wait and see.

That must be rough. Productive I'm sure but hard to balance with daily life

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.
