I'm looking to buy an ultra high quality laptop. At the moment, I'm looking at an Alienware M18-X with maximum allowed specs, and a few amenities. It looks as though it's going to cost around 5,800 dollars (going to use some tuition refunds for that).

But then I thought I might turn to you guys to see if you would recommend a better deal/brand with roughly the same specs.

Here's the specs for the maxed out Alienware M18-X.

PROCESSOR 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3940XM (8MB Cache, up to 4.2GHz Overclocked)
OPERATING SYSTEM Windows® 7 Professional, 64bit
MEMORY 32GB (4 X 8GB) Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz
HARD DRIVE 1.5TB RAID 0 (3x 500GB SATA 3B/s 7,200 RPM) + 64GB mSATA Caching SSD

I'd suggest looking at some of the Higher end Asus laptops, they may not look as nice but they usually have similar specs and cost like 1/5th of the price.

does it have to be a laptop? cause for $2000 you could build yourself a highend desktop with a monitor that would blow away any laptop.

What GPU are you looking at you never said ?

I'm sitting here on my Asus G75-VW, and it's amazing. It has 2 HDD bays, so I got it with a 750GB HD and installed a 256GB Samsung 830 SSD for my system drive. It's beautiful. So +1 for Asus over Alienware, and also +1 for not Dell, ever. Speaking of which, Dell owns Alienware, so there's that...

I second that, the keyboard on my Acer laptop died 2 times in a row for no apparent reason and I'm still waiting for it to be fixed. I have nothing to do in free time while at school.

Dual 680Ms in a laptop... Enjoy your balls being burnt off, the system shutting down after 5 minutes, and you not even seeing as long as the thermal shutdown unless it's plugged into the mains. Only slightly exaggerating, too!

If you want high-end gaming, get a desktop. Modern laptops can game well, but if you want really powerful stuff, a laptop will disappoint you.

Oh you really want to go that high-end huh.
Well then I would really suggest you get a desktop.
You can have the same for 3000 dollars less.
I would never buy a laptop that expensive because you should always keep in mind that laptops have a shorter livespan than desktops.
Most laptops break after about 3 years, while an equally powerfull desktop can last 7-10 years + you can easilly replace parts so it lasts even longer.

:o Why would you ever need over 1TB of SSD storage (1.8TB on the Asus, and not even in SATA3 or RAID-0, holy damn)? Don't you think that's a bit excessive?

EDIT: And you don't need 32GB RAM either. That's waay more than you'll ever need for gaming.

Forgive my forwardness, but using a laptop for high-end gaming is just silly; a couple of grands lost for nothing.

But if you're still serious, my friend uses an Asus and it's working great.

You all might have a point about the high-end laptops. Reason I sort of wanted one is that I'm currently far away from home at a college program, with my (actually my Dad's) 2010 medium-high-end desktop sitting at home. I have to move a lot at this program; it's Job Corps, which means that they have this up-the-ass-retarded thing about having the rooms being spotless when you leave each day. I can't stuff that much computer equipment into my tiny allotted closet every day. Plus I spend most of my day at the community college.

It really hurts being away from a gaming computer with internet after being so used to having access to one for so many years. The one I'm using now is one of those censored school networks where they block like crazy. I'm surprised GBATemp isn't blocked.

Well, anyway, I started the whole high-end laptop comparison, so I might as well finish it. Maybe I'll put all the info in a more informative, less personal thread and ya'll can sticky it. I dunno. Not like I have anything else to do. =P

Sigh. Now I made myself sad.

Portability, that's why. You can't lug a desktop PC around a college campus, can you?

I have a desktop for gaming and an ultrabook for college use.

Both cost far less than a decent high-end gaming laptop and my desktop is strong enough to run Far Cry 3 on high.

Of course, lugging around a gaming laptop is perfectly fine if the user is open to carrying at least 5 kg of hardware around campus. No contention there.
