Team Fortress 2, the groundbreaking, in-depth hat simulator (with a decent multiplayer shooter tacked on), has been on the market for years now. Despite its age, it continues to be a popular choice among gamers.

Well, brace yourselves, GBAtemp. I have some bad news: In what can only be described as a hat-astrophe, Valve will be retiring the game's original nine hats.

The list of retired hats list includes: Batter's Helmet, Soldier's Stash, Pyro's Beanie, Demoman's Fro, Football Helmet, Mining Light, Prussian Pickelhauge, Trophy Belt, and Fancy Fedora. Though still tradable, these hats will no longer drop or be craftable. An exception includes older crates which still might drop these classic scalp-scarves.

The Escapist, Official Mann Co. Announcement

President and CEO of Mann Co., Saxton Hale, claims that the move was sparked by a raccoon infestation in one of the company's factories. Valve, meanwhile, is likely interested in adding some more scarcity to the game's hat-based economy, driving up the value of these items.

Remember, kids: Money doesn't go on trees, but it does sprout from hats.

If you want to get your hands on any of these hats, you have two more weeks to purchase, collect, or craft them. If you're averse to trading, you could always try your luck with older chests, but your odds won't be good.

Take it from me. You shouldn't have any crate expectations.

Okay I guess this is as good as a thread that they'll come for TF2 on here.

I'll take all (really any items, anything) your TF2 items off your hands! You really help me out with them!

OT: Really Gahars, you only made this thread because you knew you could pull out something out of your big hat.

Eh....I'm assuming this must be fairly big news to TF2 fans, but it just sounds silly to me as a non-TF2 player.

Do the hats actually change anything? Or is it just more of a "HEY LOOK I GOT THIS RARE HAT!"

Changes nothing about the game unless you're a tard really, but it's also a way to make money which is diluting the system further.

wtf is team fortress 2 and why are hats so important in it?

Hats change nothing. Just appearance.
IT's a good way to stand out, especially if you get an unusual, like this one for example:

It's a cheap attempt at a money grab, valve will sell more of these hats in those 2 weeks then they probably did all last year
these are some of the most common, ugly, and unwanted hats in the game

Well I do like the Fancy Fedora....

and the Soldier's Stash isn't half-bad either

there is another one about Spy that collects masks that I guess you have to play the game to understand. I've never actually played TF2 but I hear nothing but good things about it.

Ah ok then. Well I can't hate, I played Maple Story for 6 years <_<. Still, as someone who's fallen for that trap before, I never plan to fall for it again. So I know what game to steer clear of.

you can just play the game you dont have to get involved in the whole trade system though sooner or later its going to suck you in

Isn't team fortress 2 an FPS. Which is kinda known for not knowing what the fuck you've got on your head to begin with?

It's amazing they've got their own feature thing going to start with (more precisely: that anyone even picks up on it). But now they're going to increase the scarcity of it?

That's madness. There's no other explanation. They must be mad. Mad as a hatter!

everybody else can your hats or misc items
it's just to show off and make your self stand out from everybody else
tf2 would most likely be dead though if it didn't introduce new hats and items (just look at the ps3 and 360 versions)

Those are dead because FPS' suck on consoles.

As a TF2 trader, my thoughts on this are that I should stock up on these hats now, because in a few years when they have been traded away and are rare, they will be expensive, like other discontinued/promo items (bills, buds, severed head etc).

I'll be honest, I never got in to TF2 at all. I thought it was waaaay too fucking boring and it never held my attention at all. Could just be the type of FPS that it is though.

Anyways, a quick look at my inventory to see if I have any hats and it turns out I do surprisingly:

Manniversary Paper Hat
The Spiral Sallet
Batter's Helmet
Ellis' Cap

I also have two crates so who knows if they'll drop anything.
