Hello.
I have not found any answers to this.. Is it in any way possible to update the firmware through the 3DS?

the flashcard has to be currently working on the console if you want to update it.
if you have already updated the console (so you are now seeing an error when booting the card) there is no way to update the card, you will need to find/borrow a console that it currently load on

So if I borrow a DS lite, update it through that, THEN I can update the card though the 3DS from now on?

if you borow a DSLite
download 1.63b kernel for your card and place it on the SD
then

it will then work on 4.4.0-10

you will be able to update the card on your 3DS but you must make sure you wait until the card is updated to a support the newer version first before you update the console

As long as you can run the cart, you can update the cart.

That's it. If you need to ask if you can update it, simply ask yourself "Does it still run on the 3DS?", and there's your answer.
