Raspberry Pi Model B NOW with 512 MB of Ram

For those of you who have yet to received your Raspberry PI or are looking forward to buying one, this is good news for you!

One of the most common suggestions we’ve heard since launch is that we should produce a more expensive “Model C” version of Raspberry Pi with extra RAM. This would be useful for people who want to use the Pi as a general-purpose computer, with multiple large applications running concurrently, and would enable some interesting embedded use cases (particularly using Java) which are slightly too heavyweight to fit comfortably in 256MB.

The downside of this suggestion for us is that we’re very attached to $35 as our highest price point. With this in mind, we’re pleased to announce that from today all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB of RAM as standard. If you have an outstanding order with either distributor, you will receive the upgraded device in place of the 256MB version you ordered. Units should start arriving in customers’ hands today, and we will be making a firmware upgrade available in the next couple of days to enable access to the additional memory.

I have a 256MB model myself although admittedly I haven't fiddled with it much.

I'm wondering what the 512MB model will open up, it's such a neat little device but unfortunately there's not much to do with it being that it's quite limited.

I would really like to see OnLive on there one day. Cough cough.

Sadly, OnLive on the Pi isn't going to happen. The Pi is ARMv6 and OnLive runs on ARMv7 as a minimum. There is a port of Android 4.0 being worked on. Hopefully the 512MB update will help move that project along. anybody waiting for a cheap android device to play OnLive on via a TV should just wait for Ouya. At least then, you re getting more bang for your buck.

Teehee! Those things are pretty wicked and I think they ARE ARMv7 so, Onlive would be a possibility with these Android sticks

Hopefully my Pi will arrive soon.. Ordered on July 19th. Still waiting (19 weeks delivery time!).

@[member='Depravo']: I'll be using my Pi for XBMC/Airplay type multimedia. The XBMC for the Pi seems to work pretty well, and compared to AppleTV and the likes, this gives pretty much the same capabilities in terms of streaming video/audio from a laptop. Not sure of the other features, but at least those

I got mine pretty quickly, although I had a huge wait for the Pibow case.

YES.
512MB is enough to run almost anything except high-end games nowadays, and even those sometimes.

And yes, I realize that high-end games won't run on ARM.

High end by whose standard? We're talking ARM here not x86. Go look at Six Guns, Dead Trigger, Modern Combat 3, Mass Effect Infiltrator and Shdowgun. All five of those games look superb and I can verify that they run well with 512MB of RAM.

I saw this earlier today and it seriously tempted me but I do not want it sit around only being used every month or two like my arduino and teensy++ are presently. This said those plug computers and some routers with similar abilities I always found fascinating and I could do with something to route things through when I am out and about.

If XBMC gets a bit of a boost and stability can be reasonably assured I might fire a few around for relatives to try out.

I'm waiting on Ouya. I want any device I own to have purpose and not be sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Actually, I'm considering selling my OnLive Micro Console. For those of you getting a Raspberry Pi. I hope you have fun with them. With the RAM bump up there seems to be more incentive to get the device. For those of you who want to use Android for it, there are ARMv6 versions of many games even, surprisingly, Mass Effect Infiltrator (not officially of course )

That is nice twice the ram i am glad i haven't ordered one yet I've been procrastinating over getting in a fight with my wallet for one.
I'm still probably gonna wait till android 4.0 gets ported with the extra ram it shouldn't take them too much longer and should run much smoother.

The Raspberry Pi can be used for development and have custom add-ons made for it, it is a tool for learning to program and other such things.
While an android stick is nice for mainstream such as watching videos on netfilx, listening to music, emulation, and web browsing, it doesn't cover all the bases an developer or hardware tweaking enthusiast would like while the Raspberry Pi does this.
