Fair enough to those that have the dosh (and space around their tv) to have every console made. But your not obligated to buy the same game you've played on another console it is optional.

However to say you hate ports its pretty much saying "ports are the devils children and should never see the light of day" then thats abit selfish on your part. Not everyone played "game A or game B" like you did because they either A: didnt have the money to throw around by owning multiple consoles and buy games and perphrials for each console. Or B: didn't want to cause a clusterfuck around their tv with wires, controllers, games etc.. and opted for 1 console they enjoyed the most, in this case Wii.

Those particular Wii owners will have seen a few games on other consoles but it didnt warrant adding a new console to mix. I mean if you had a choice between 1 console for every game or any number of consoles for different games? You'd choose 1 console like everyone would. Also ports are easy and cheaply made and they can use those games to reach out and create new fanbase that missed out in turn generating a huge profit for them to stay in business and have the money to take chances on new and original ideas instead of pumping out sequel after sequel to play it safe. Whats so bad about that.

I will say, you are entitled to your opinion as is everyone else but dont just think of it from your perspective, hop over the fence a little and think about it if you missed out.

OOT 3D is more like a port with hi-res textures.
There are just few parts that were actually remade
Dude, look up the hi-res texture packs available for emulators. Hi-res textures can't do most of the things that OoT 3D did (like making hands that actually have fingers, and completely new movement animations for many NPCs). Those weren't just "hi-res" texture replacements, they were complete graphic overhauls. Sure, there were still some legacy bits left in at the core, but overall the graphics were completely redone.

But this thread is about ports in general, not OoT 3D, so I'll stop there.

Faces, hands, and few parts like hyrule town were actually remodeled.
The most parts of this game were just retexturing.

It looks more like they remodeled what they couldn't retexture

Am I really reading that Ocarina of Time 3D is more a port than a remake?

That's wrong in so many ways. Graphics were completely overhauled, Water Temple was fixed, interface was streamlined and more.

Water Temple was fixed? Didn't they just make it so you didn't have to pause the game to put the boots on?

Personally, I loved the Water Temple, I thought it was the best temple in every Zelda game. Perfect difficulty for me, and once I beat it, I felt accomplished unlike the other temples.

I think you need to play the game again. Very few things are noticeable as having been flat-out reused or retextured (like certain staircases). And all "static" two dimensional backgrounds in certain areas have been redone to be fully three dimensional.

That, plus they added color-coded "lines" on the walls that show you how to get to each of the different icons to change the water level. I think they were in the original, too, but they were the same color as the rest of the wall, and with the lower resolution, etc it was hard to see them. Very minor differences, honestly, but they definitely helped (though I had played through the Water Temple enough times to almost have it memorized by the time I picked up OoT 3D).

Yes, you are!

Completely overhauled?! You can still find in-game objects that are unchanged(fences, stairs and many others).

Water Temple was fixed

It wasn't fixed because the original wasn't broken, like @ShadowSoldier said,
they just changed the way to change the boots.

interface was streamlined and more.

Comes with the retexture. I've played OOT with high-res textures a dozen of times,
and sincerely, some parts look better than OOT 3D(The water, link's wood shield, Zora's Fountain, Goron's Cavern, the special effects when songs are played...)

Go back and play OOT on an N64. Then go and play OOT 3D. If you still think it's more of a port, then I honestly think you should go to an eye doctor.

Every single texture and model is improved.

In fact, if some parts are indeed the same, prove it. Show me some screenshots or videos that show that.

Almost everything in original Zelda with high-res textures look better than 3DS version.
The 3D models in OOT for 3DS were re-done, the boots are now equipable itens, and some parts were changed for 3D models(hyrule town and horse's room),
but everything else is re-texturing.

You realize most of those pics aren't even in the original 3DS resolution so it looks worse. And good job on finding the worst possible pic of Kakiro Village. I've completed the game and it doesn't look like that.

Why are you comparing the re-textured emulated version instead of the N64 version? I'm arguing that it's not more of a port than a remake and you gave me pics of an emulated version with updated textures...? Come back to me when you have legitimate comparisons.

So they just HAPPENED to decide to change ONLY a few parts massively, in every way imaginable? I see. I'm sure that's EXACTLY what happened.

Except that all the hi-res photos you show have no advantage over the 3DS counterparts, aside from a much higher resolution than the 3DS. Look at those high-res textures. They still look much blockier and mostly much less detailed than the 3DS version.

At any rate, this doesn't disprove the 3DS version being a remake of the original N64 version. If anything, you comparing a hi-res texture set of the original to the 3DS version only PROVES that the 3DS version is a remake, since the hi-res version looks near identical to the original except in higher resolution, whereas the 3DS version doesn't.

On the note of Ocarina of Time 3D, if your remake is practically indistinguishable from a port, then it's a bad remake. I mean they get the opportunity to rebuild the entire game and instead of fixing the issues with it (yes there are several issues with OoT, something age brings around like loose bowels or lack of teeth) they remake it brick for brick. It just shows a squandered opportunity.

I have to say those high res textures look better and rather damn sexy for a game THAT old.

I always said it was more of a port retextured than a real remake.

What is a remake?
re-make, make again, make the game from nothing.
Totally different from getting the same game, remodel some things, apply high-res textures and call it a remake.
It's not a remake, it's a enchanced port

Not really a game but I would love to see a Intellivision emulator that way those overlays can be on the screen. Sort of like they did for the DS but on a TV this time.

Some of those Intellivision games where awesome.

Well, it's a good thing that OoT 3D is extremely distinguishable from the original, then. ;)

It's the same exact game with some better graphics. That's basically just as bad as a HD port.

According to what game developer? Source, please.

I suppose that Halo Anniversary is just a 360 port of an Xbox game, then. That game did far less than OoT 3D did (the exact same engine with no refinements, with a graphics overlay) and people still consider it a remake.
It's not a remake, it's a enchanced port
Oh, so now your argument's changed from a port to an ENHANCED port, which is somehow different from a remake. I see.
You make this way too easy.

Have you played it? The game plays smoother with better controls. Turning and swinging your sword alone is much easier and more accurate. And they added the special control options and features taking advantage of the 3DS's special capabilities (Even if it's only a few). That's more than can be said for most HD ports.

Consider you're arguing that it's closer to a port than a remake, the burden of proof is on you. I'm waiting.

Since you guys love to argue semantics:

A video game remake is a game closely adapted from an earlier title, usually for the purpose of modernizing a game for newer hardware and contemporary audiences. Typically, a remake shares essentially the same title, fundamental gameplay concepts, and story elements of the original game. Changes usually involve superficial graphical enhancements, but may also include substantial gameplay changes and expanded content.

OOT3D is a remake. Those HD Collections Guild mentioned are remastered ports.

@xwatchmanx: Not to mention the improved framerate (15-20FPS to 30FPS).

I don't think your input is really needed since you haven't even played the game to judge it fairly. Go to the Vita forum or something. ;)

My point is that they didn't change it though. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection (admittedly I love it) looks better, controls better, and runs smoother. That's the case with most HD ports.

An even better (and closer) example is Perfect Dark. The XBLA version runs better (a smooth 60FPS), controls better (it has the best controller known to man and not the worst controller known to man like its original platform), and looks better (well the game still looks like shit but it looks better still). But it's still the same game. But it's a port, I don't expect much.

They were given an opportunity to fix the game. Everything you described can be done on a HD port, for a remake I would expect them to really make the game different. It's an incredibly lazy remake if it ends up feeling like a port, that's my point.
