As if Duke Nukem Forever wasn't bad enough...

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford has stated that he wants to make more Duke Nukem titles, despite the poor reception from fans and critics of Duke Nukem Forever.

In an interview with IGN, Pitchford stated that “I willingly and lovingly acquired the brand. When I did that, I wasn’t thinking that the only goal is just to make sure everyone could play Duke Nukem Forever.” before commenting that “The real goal for me is I’d like to build a Duke Nukem game again.”

For those of you haven't played Duke Nukem Forever, don't. Really, just don't. You're not missing anything.

Do you think Gearbox should give Duke another go, or just "Nuke him" already?

I think the problem with Duke Nukem Forever was that Gearbox just got a whole load of material that they were supposed to put together into a fun game. They didn't get to remake the game from scratch which is what I'd assume they'd do if they were to make a sequel.

Forever wasn't as bad as most people tend to picture it, it was simply suffering from the "development limbo" syndrome. It was in development for so long that certain parts of the game were outdated by the time it was released, not to mention that the expectations for the game rose each year, just to be quenched by something that would be "acceptable" if the development time was shorter. It took so much time that people expected it to be a masterpiece, but that's not how software works. It was too old for its own good with some contemporary shaders put on it to make up for lost time.

A sequel made from scratch does sound good though, and Gearbox is a much bigger studio. There was a time in Forever's development when about 17 coders worked on it - what exactly did you expect as a result? ;)

Really, I think the problem wasn't that people expected a masterpiece - they just expected something good, and it seriously failed to deliver.

I can appreciate that Gearbox might have been doing their best to polish a turd, but the game was still a turd, through and through. A new game might be more polished, sure, but do we really need to see more of Duke? He's a relic from a bygone era; they would be better off leaving him be, and focusing their efforts on something new.

I sincerely like The Duke - he's a character like no other in video games nowadays. He's not a mopy character, he's not angsty, he's not emo, he didn't lose his family and/or friends in a fire, he's not on a non-sensical quest. He's doin' it for the ladies - he's The Duke, the king of the world.

Don't you think that it's an interesting change from all the crybaby characters? Sometimes I'm not in the mood to listen to the main lead's inner monologue of emotional conflict, sometimes I just want to shoot an alien in the face and toss some dollars at a stripper, and Duke Nukem delivers that.

He's an immortal hero, be it a relict or not, and he should be preserved.

You are correct 100%!!
I love The Duke! He is the perfect image of 90's shooters!
But that doesn't change the fact that Duke Nukem Forever was pretty awful. It not only suffered from it's years in development, but also suffered from a really short game time. I wish they would remake DNF and make it the way they intended it to be. So what I am saying is, a DNF2 isn't necessarily at this moment, they need to go back and fix their previous mistakes first.

I get what you're saying, but that only goes so far, though. He's a one note, one dimensional joke that was tired in the 90s. He's not fun or exciting, just dull and juvenile.

Besides, there's always Dante (pre-DMC, anyway), Frank West (Action Photographer), and countless other fun protagonists in games. We don't have to settle for Duke anymore.

I was under the impression when Gearbox got DN they basically inherited all the problems it had as well. Gearbox are usually a great little development studio so if they was to make a Duke game from the ground up you would see better results

I'm a Duke fan too. As far as gameplay went, I did get some of the old nostalgia. It just left me wanting more. Wanna know what REALLY pissed me off about the game?

SPOILER ALERT AHEAD: as if you give a shit.

Did you happen to press the action button on the glory hole in the strip club? After *ahem* it plays out, if you move the camera so that you can see into the adjacent stall, you'll realize it was a man on the other side.
I don't know if they were just trying to be funny, thought no one would or could see what they put there or were just trying to piss off duke fans because they can. (not that the game didn't piss most fans off anyway.)
I have faith that they might be able to pull off a sequel that the masses actually think is good. As long as they don't take so long that it is already outdated by the time they release it. The Duke can still be a badass in today's gaming world. Hey, maybe they'll have him reciting one-liners about how bad the first one was. ;)

A 14 year development cycle, it's kinda hard to live up to expectations. Not to mention, they had to work with what they were given. I'd say if they started off scratch, they could easily make a good Duke Nukem game.

Think about it this way, if you abandoned the prospect of ever seeing another good 3D Sonic game again after Sonic Adventure 2, then you'd have missed out on Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. Yes there was a lot of crap in there. But when you finally start fresh again, look at what worked and what didn't, well then any franchise can be saved despite what one (or even many) game in the series ended up like. Hopefully we don't have to go through as many Duke Nukem Forevers as we did shitty 3D Sonics before we get back to what made the franchise great (and certainly not even close to 14 years to develop the next title), but I have faith that a well done Duke game can be done again.

GB should totally do a sequal, or reboot in this case really, or sequals to the old game and leave forever in limbo, I like that idea the best.

I was looking forward to DNF, it would have been a different to all of the po faced dull brown shooters out there but ultimately it was pretty damn dated and the levels were horribly designed. The original developers ruined their own character making the humour down to the lowest form of childish crap going.

He was originally a callback to 80's action heroes, someone who didn't really give a shit and he was just about going in guns blazing and being a badass. They should go back to that, maybe even take a look at the first two PC games and go back to a late 80's sci fi theme. Something that would capture the feel of films like They Live & Escape from New York.

No one should be surprised about this. They acquired the IP for a reason. Did no one think it was to make another duke nukem game? Because generally that's what you fucking do with game IPs after you get them.

I bought Forever at launch and I have to say I had a blast. I thought the campaign was funny and fun but I had a great time playing online. It reminds me of playing with my friends back during the N64 days.
