I'm well aware of what it can do, just a tad confused of why it exists.

My biggest assumption was that the GBC had an IR port. and as this plays GBC games, I believe it's compatible?

Also, I heard from a friend that PKMN BW can also utilize this? I assume flash cart users have this as a benefit?

Just asking questions here.

GBC games and such cannot use the port, though it may be added as a later feature.

Pokemon games that use IR (HG/SS/B/W) actually have IR in the carts themselves. They're also not 3DS games, so they don't get to use any 3DS-specific hardware.

Same with flash carts. Flash carts do not run in 3DS mode and thus cannot use any 3DS-specific hardware, such as the IR port or SD card slot. In addition no flash cart has IR, as very few games use it, and only for optional features.

The circle pad pro uses the IR port if i'm not mistaken so maybe they just put it there just in case they needed it for something.

From my knowledge, BW uses wireless signal, not IR port at least for trading. I have no idea of what benefits the IR port can have for flashcart users. My IR port has never even been used as far as I know, and I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. Hopefully someone else can better answer your question.

The C-Gear does have some IR funnctionality, but as was stated, the IR chip is withing the game card itself and it doesn't utilise the Nintendo 3DS hardware.

Thanks everyone.
I just had a bit of a derpy moment asking about IR and PKMN on flash carts. I should've known, haha. But seriously, flash cart makers need to implement the feature.
I just hope that the GBC games get SOME use out if it... could just imagine G/S/C being re-sold on the eShop, utilizing the port.

So the only use for the IR port so far has been for a 3rd party device? That's a bit weird. Wonder if they have any plans for IR interface in the future? I never thought about it much, but now that I am, it does seem rather useless unless you're a CPP user. Makes me wonder why they would include that in the hardware if they aren't going to put it to much use. I would've rather had a LED "flash" for the camera to use in low light than an IR port. Seems they would cost about the same as far as production cost to integrate into the system. Thanks for the info guys. Not having a CPP myself and not being a big pokemon player, I wouldn't have otherwise known the use for the IR port.

The PSP 1000 (or was it 2000...) had an IR port that was removed during a revision, so I'm pretty sure Nintendo put it there to serve as an adapter since the 3DS lacks any kind of data port. I'm guessing its going to be used with the CPP, maybe for some kind of remote like device like with the Wii U (it also features an IR port, so did the Wiimotes) and it already has a gyro so it might just be there to serve as an extra controller. Also, they are not going to release Pokemon VC, its a waste of time since all of them play and go pretty much the same way and have only improved with each gen, to release a old Pokemon game on a new console would be like installing Windows 2000 on a Toshiba Satilite that came with Windows 7.
