This is how quick the 3DS should've been hacked, I'm not sure what's going on with that scene. I mean the Vita doesn't even need this, it's already region free and frankly I don't think it has enough juice to emulate something like DC or PS2. But we'll see, I might soon be $250 poorer
I've seen Dreamcast emulation on the PSP. Non-playable, mind you, but emulation. The OpenPandora is much weaker than the Vita and it's perfectly capable of emulating the Dreamcast - I've seen beta builds of NullDC running on it just fine - not sure if they were ever released though, I don't think so. In any case, the Vita is perfectly capable of emulating the Dreamcast, stepping up with emulation of the N64 and perhaps, just perhaps, nudging PS2 emulation - I don't think it's a tall order at all. PS2 emulation no longer requires god knows how good specs. Not only that - think of the other consoles! The Saturn, for instance.

Moreover, the Vita not only has the potential for emulation - most of those hacks are made to allow creation of homebrew content of all sorts. Sky is the limit here, my friend.

No kernel exploit means no ISO loading, fair enough, but what does that matter when you have so much resources at hand?

If the Vita gets stable homebrew emulation that's a big enough step up from the PSP (speed, compatibility, stability, features, and systems), I'd consider getting one even if it never gets ISO loading.

Of course, those are sort of high requirements, as it assumes that Sony won't be patching the holes every other firmware update...

Honestly? If this exploit flourishes into a full-blown loader and the good 'ol boys at devkitPro wrap-up a lovely psvlib, I may as well never update the system - programming for this baby will be my new full-time hobby. I mean, it's a quad-core CPU/GPU beast with 512MB RAM. Compared to what I'm fooling around with now (ARM9 64Mhz + ARM7 dedicated for background processes and 4MB RAM) this is like trading in a donkey for a Lamborghini.

This is great news. Now to just wait and see how easily it is patched by sony. If sont doesn't or can't patch it or there's a way to not allow patching, I'm definitely interested. (assuming staying totally offline will make it impossible for them to "fix" an exploited console.) Very excited to see what happens with this. From SNES/Sega CD on down I will assume have as perfect emulation as possible. The ones that will make me hungry to buy the system will be (assuming all working full speed with sound and very stable) N64, MAME and not that bullshit mame for the psp or ds. I'm talking full fuckin mame like on pc or xbox. Able to play x-men, turtles in time, simpsons, mortal kombat 1-umk3 etc. The weaker emulation of mame that handhelds have now wont cut it. cps1&2, marvel vs capcom 2, and holy shit KILLER INSTINCT! If the vita got a homebrew emulator to run the arcade version of it, and properly, I would be all over that shit! DC, saturn, ps2 etc would be great too.
Just gotta hang back and see what happens I guess. If i ever see a proper killer instinct arcade running on it though, I will run out and get a vita the same day!

Why the donkey hate?

I see that there is an exploit. Maybe I'm talking semantics but an exploit does not mean a system is hacked. It just means it could be hacked eventually.

I don't have really high hopes for this. Aside from it being patched as soon as possible, it's basically another VHBL, just a little more native-friendly. While emulation would be nice, some systems named in the posts I have admittedly only skimmed seem to be wishing for things that aren't even that feasible on desktop machines, let alone a portable system.

I admire the enthusiasm, but I see some disappointments before anything good happens. Plus, some of you people, and I'd hope you know who you are, are impatient. Anything good will take more time than probably you want to wait.

Anyone read the twitter conversation between the hacker and an official vita developer?

@yifanlu :(
@Ouren :( ?
@yifanlu ;_; I'm a vita dev.
@Ouren I'm a part time game developer too. Why :( ?
@yifanlu We're really, really indie, and it's sad to see that the platform we've chosen to invest in ... will now be a hotbed for things...}
@Ouren and also, thank you for making Vita games. We really need more of those.
@yifanlu Why would people want to buy games when they can just download my game from the next and load it up. It's not on a cart.
@Ouren ? Because your game is encrypted and again, physically impossible to decrypt or load retail games with my exploit.
@yifanlu Your exploit doesn't do anything, yes, yes, I know. But it's an open door. Not for you, but for people who want to destroy us.
@Ouren Again, I apologize, but what can I do about what others may possibly do in the future? I would be glad to do anything in my power.
@yifanlu If you did everything in your power, you'd have not given random maniacs the keys to the car. :(
@Ouren there's nothing I could say to assuage your fears that I haven't already :(

We are Team Twiizers! We are not responsible for what people may possibly do with our exploit!
That's pretty sad, really, if it actually becomes completely hack so early.
I may as well never update the system
Never? While you probably can get on the web by homebrew,they may make some games unplayable without a update when more official games come.

While I didn't know if that the case since I didn't own a Vita, that might effect your games somewhat.

The Vita being hacked and having competent emulators would be really appealing and would definitely get me to buy one. Imagine the homebrew on that beast.

That's not to say I don't care about the 3DS scene though. With the 3DS, we could have pixel-perfect emulation of SNES, Sega Genesis, C64 and NES games thanks to the resolution! 3D movie playback on the 3DS XL screen is also very appealing.

FINALLY PROGRESS ON THE VITA but i agree with Foxi4 that was a dumb move on the devs part so if u want to use the exploit now don't update past the current firmware and i hope th Men in black (Lawyers) don't get him before release

What is the possibility of someone being nice and skilled enough in making 3d emulators of some of them by splitting the layers, from 1-10? :P

Would be nice to have a full running browser for the 3ds. Probably can use the 3ds as a TV remote too.

The Vita can scale 2x though, and even though the pixels are doubled in size, the actual appearance might not be that different since the devices are using a different pixel density. Double a pixel size on something with double the density looks the same. I don't know the pixel density or care to calculate it off the top of my head, but I did the resolution comparisons out of curiousity.

Anyways my point is if 2:2 scaling is going on, that opens up options for filtering along the lines of 2xSAI/Eagle and the like.

3DS: 400x240
Vita: 960x554

NES: 256x240
3DS Fits: 1:1
Vita Fits: 1:1, 2:2

C64: 160x200 (most common in games), 320:200 (rarely used for games)
3DS Fits: 1:1
Vita Fits: 1:1, 2:2 (both modes)

Genesis: 256x224 or 320x224 (more common?)
3DS Fits: 1:1
Vita Fits: 1:1, 2:2 (both modes)

SNES: 256x224 (most common), 512x224 (pseudo-hi-res, gets filtered anyways)
3DS Fits: 1:1
Vita Fits: 1:1, 2:2

I'm admittedly not very interested until we see a Gamecube or PS2 emulator. Progress is progress, I s'pose, but it'd take something as special as that to get me hacking my Vita.

I don't think a vita can emulate either of those...
Not full scale anyway.
Unless the vita is close to ps2 hardware like the psp was to the psx.
Gamecube? I don't see it happening.

The CPU architecture of the PSP is RISC-based, which is the same type the PSX used. The Vita has an ARM-based CPU in it, which is a quite different architecture from both the PSP and PS2 (also RISC-based).

As i've said before vita has 2010 mobile tech and is not strong enough for decent emulation for ps2, let alone the gamecube. You need a beefy PC to emulate ps2, goodbye vita hopes. Now we are getting phones as powerful as vita and by next year (2013) we will see a surge of smartphones more capable than Vita, they may have a chance. That's a good three years over Vita's tech.

Right now we have some phones with better chipsets than the Vita, but they lack the quad cores in both cpu and gpu. Sooner or later we will see beast smartphones smoking the Vita and probably emulate the 6th generation with the more improved chips.

except its still a phone...with no physical controls, most hardcore games (which there are few of) control like crap. Then add on the fact that a phone by itself costs 500+$ new one its own makes having them only for people with lots of cash or those who have to renew a contract and still need to dish out 200-300$ for one anyway.

and of course phones will surpas a handheld system meant to be around for like 4-5 years, there are new phones every few months at this point. I can barely stand gaming on my phone as it and lacking decent controls, major lack of battery power (because its my phone, so i need it on for that) means it wont be a huge place to play stuff like GC games.

This early into a very shaky launch, if this is true, is dire news for SONY--Vita owners that wanted their machines as something more than a Twitter console and something to play SNES games on are going to find themselves the 'beneficiary' of a release schedule that'll make the early days of the N64 look stacked.

The early days of vita aren't that great as it is. I know some ppl are diehard sony fans. I love my psp, and I got mine before the really good games came out. (some would still argue no REALLY good games came out.) Anyway, I said to my buddy at lauch of the vita and am still saying to this day: "I will have interest in the vita when it finally gets that killer app i can't live without." My friend was so hyped about the power of it etc. like most people that were excited about it. I saw that yes, it is more powerful than the 3DS, but there weren't any and still aren't any games on it to justify paying $250-$300. Still aren't in my opinion. Although I said the same thing when 3DSvlaunched at $250.
Yes, piracy may hurt sony, and did hurt sony via devs vowing to no longer produce games for their mobile platform because of piracy. If you need proof, look up the God of War: Ghost of Sparta incident.
That being said, piracy on vita does not yet exist. The only thing hurting sales right now is the ridiculous pricing of the console, the mem sticks and some other accessories and the piss poor game selection. The only killer game ppl may argue that is worth getting a vita for is Uncharted. Not for me. I played it, it's fun, but it is not getting me or many others to buy a handheld at that price. Piracy isn't screwing sony, sony is screwing sony. PS3 had a very slow start, psp had a very slow start, vita had a very slow start. People should see a pattern there instead of always looking for a scape goat. Shit sales=/=obvious cause is piracy.

As it turns out, it may not really matter if rumors about it selling well under 40K for the entire month of August in North America are true--sales that low will kill it faster than piracy.
