As it turns out, it may not really matter if rumors about it selling well under 40K for the entire month of August in North America are true--sales that low will kill it faster than piracy.

^^^BAM^^^
Also, holy shit 40k units in one month??!!! I know it's for the whole country, but i thought it was selling way less than that. Just seems like a lot since I've personally only seen like 3 or 4 move since launch. I know that's WAY lower than what was selling at launch, but it does seem like quite a bit. I guess they just projected this thing to fly off shelves. Maybe someone should've told them it wouldn't. Not at that price and not with that game selection.
If they still do the Final Fantasy X HD on there though, that'll move units. Especially if there's a price drop by then. They should send squenix a huge bribe to get them to make FF7 HD fully remade exclusive to the vita. It would instantly rise to the top of the charts as one of, if not THE best selling handheld ever. Won't happen, but they could recoup their losses. I bet ppl would buy it even if they upped their pricing a bit if they had that game comin. :P

Whole country? No, that's for the entire continent, minus, perhaps, nations south of Mexico..

*lol sony will locate their IP address by a court order and cease and desist this project and threaten jail time.

if they can be butthurt enough to give the PS3 the same treatment. They might with this.

sarcasm* :tpi:*

All joking aside...the dev of this exploit isn't making youtube videos saying "COME AT ME SONY! Your mother wears big undies! nana nana boo boo!"

Sony must be laughing their asses off....they will block the exploit propably in some months but on purpose this way they will sell so many ps vita units and memory sticks... they couldnt even imagine though eventually bans will come and the exploit will be blocked and all hacked psvita users will try to sell their vita ^^

The Vita can scale 2x though, and even though the pixels are doubled in size, the actual appearance might not be that different since the devices are using a different pixel density. Double a pixel size on something with double the density looks the same. I don't know the pixel density or care to calculate it off the top of my head, but I did the resolution comparisons out of curiousity.

Anyways my point is if 2:2 scaling is going on, that opens up options for filtering along the lines of 2xSAI/Eagle and the like.

3DS: 400x240
Vita: 960x554

NES: 256x240
3DS Fits: 1:1
Vita Fits: 1:1, 2:2

C64: 160x200 (most common in games), 320:200 (rarely used for games)
3DS Fits: 1:1
Vita Fits: 1:1, 2:2 (both modes)

Genesis: 256x224 or 320x224 (more common?)
3DS Fits: 1:1
Vita Fits: 1:1, 2:2 (both modes)

SNES: 256x224 (most common), 512x224 (pseudo-hi-res, gets filtered anyways)
3DS Fits: 1:1
Vita Fits: 1:1, 2:2
The NES, SNES and Sega Genesis all output at 256x240 (or 256x224 for NTSC). This results in pixel-perfect emulation on the 3DS as the vertical resolution is exactly the same.

While the Vita can certainly do 1:1 emulation too thanks to the high resolution, the image would be too small relative to the rest of the screen to actually play on.

2x scaling and filtering will help with image quality but I would argue that the image quality wouldn't be as good as if you were rendering it at the original resolution. Since both consoles should be sufficently powerful enough to emulate the NES, SNES and Genesis, I would say that the 3DS is superior in emulation for those consoles.

According to the NPD, the Vita was doing ~50k monthly in the US during July. That's Dreamcast levels bad. And don't even bring up Japan where it's doing even worse (~10k weekly). FFX HD won't boost sales permanently as that's only an enhanced port. Sony should have got some exclusives from popular franchises.

Then how do we know that this isn't fake? In fact, how come no one has 'called BS' already as so many did in all the 3DS threads? Hell, the Crown3DS thread was accused of being fake 1 post in, and they had video. O.o

I must be missing something here.

Because wololo doesn't post fake news.

I do have a side comment, the whole thing is usermode... I don't think they have kernel access.
Try not get overly excited people, we are months away from anything usable - if not longer.

PS vita is pretty cheap second hand from what I've seen, easily to grab if people want one. I hope 6th gen console emulators are possible. If not dreamcast is good enough and sega saturn.

Except even the PC doesn't have a decent Saturn emulator. But yes, that is something I would absolutely love.

About the Vita being cheap, oh yeah. Craiglist FTW. Bought mine for $150 total and it didn't even have a mark on it.

I don't want to continue this Vita vs 3DS debate, but I do agree with you that the 3DS is superior, excluding any filtering and effects like high rez Mode 7. I have the math to prove it, but because we shouldn't be discussing the 3DS, I won't show it unless asked.

Well this thread has devolved into a general emulation discussion thread so it shouldn't matter. Discussing 3DS emulation vs. Vita emulation is still somewhat on-topic.

3DS: 400x240 at 8x5cm.
50x48 PPI
This is of course not counting the filtered 800 width of the 3DS's top screen, since each eye only gets 400x240 even with 3D on, and emulators will likely run with it off anyways.

Vita: 960x554 at 11x6cm.
87x92 (rounded down, not even numbers) PPI

So the Vita's pixel density is almost double that of the 3DS... so 2:2 scaling without filtering (nearest-neighbor scaling) on the Vita will look the same as 1:1 display on the 3DS.

If we take your example screens and we double the emulated resolution of the Vita and then double the 3DS's entire size to simulate what it would look like as a comparison, it's a minor difference in emulated area versus total screen area.

"The screens won't be EXACTLY the same" - The GBA, GBA SP, and GBA Micro don't have screens the exact same size either and it works out.

The dark blue is the shared emulated screen space, light/sky blue is the 3DS's total area, green is the Vita's total area. You can see that at 2:2 scaling (as always I focus on keeping the aspect ratio correct, pet peeve of mine) the only thing the Vita has as a detraction would be small black bars at the top and bottom, but these are issues already dealt with on the PSP. In addition the Vita would have the option of applying a nice filter since it's doing whole-multiple scaling externally.

Actually, I take that back. Looking over my math, it would appear that the Vita gains the advantage in most aspects.

The PSVita screen is 5in diagonal - (~4.36 x ~2.45 inches from 16:9) at 960x544 resolution = ~220 pixels/in
The 3DS top screen is 3.52 diagonal - (~3.03 x ~1.82 inches from 5:3) at 400x240 resolution = ~132 pixels/in

We then convert to NES pixels in a sense. The 3DS does no scaling, so 1:1. The Vita can scale by 2x without affecting output, so 1:2.

PSVita - 220 pixels/in * 1 NES pixel/2 pixel = 110 NES pixels/in -> Output displays at 2.33 x 2.18 inches
3DS - 132 pixels/in * 1 NES pixel/1 pixel = 132 NES pixels/in -> Output displays at 1.94 x 1.82 inches

What does this mean? Well, the Vita shows exactly the same output that the 3DS would, scaled pixel for scaled pixel, but it is displayed in a larger area (not by resolution, but physical length) than the 3DS. Not only that, but the Vita can also benefit from filtering because it is scaled.

OH...oh shit! lol well, yeah. Guess that is a bit more telling. And now I understand how I've seen 3 move since release. But still no plans for price drop cause their holiday game lineup will save them right? Oh sony, you're such a silly-head.

I stand corrected then. I guess emulation on both devices for the platforms I've mentioned will be mostly similar with the exception of black bars on the Vita's screen and a slightly smaller screen for the 3DS (3DS XL = 4.88", Vita = 5").

Edit: Or if DiscostewSM's math is correct, a larger area for the 3DS XL making the 3DS XL superior unless you like filters and stuff.

PSVita - 220 pixels/in * 1 NES pixel/2 pixel = 110 NES pixels/in -> Output displays at 2.33 x 2.18 inches
3DS - 132 pixels/in * 1 NES pixel/1 pixel = 132 NES pixels/in -> Output displays at 1.94 x 1.82 inches

Should make note that this is based on the original 3DS and the Vita. This wasn't including the 3DS XL, which after calculating, beats both.

3DS XL - 96 pixels/in -> Output displays at 2.67 x 2.5 inches
