No, it's not that dark live-action tv drama you keep hearing about.

Announced at Star Wars Celebration VI today was Star Wars Detours, an animated comedy from the minds of Robot Chicken. It features all your favourite Star Wars characters with typical Robot Chicken-style humour. And yes, there is dancing.

And it's uh, well.... take a look at the trailer for yourselves and form your own opinions:

I couldn't get through half of that before my constant facepalming gave me a nosebleed.

You know a franchise is dying when it parodies itself.

In other news: George Lucas has stopped pretending to care about the Star Wars fanbase, and has been quoted saying "I have the original script for Star Wars: The Original Trilogy, and I'm wiping my ass with it"

Robot Chicken is great because it limits the length of the segments (so it doesn't bore you), and has a plethora of different unrelated scenarios, that sometimes interact with each other, to choose from (again, to not bore you). This seem to ignore both of those, and that will be its downfall.

Robot Chicken Star Wars was funny. This wasn't.

I mean it seems a lot more "kid friendly" than Robot Chicken. Seems like a cheap Cartoon Network show actually. Not Adult Swim, I mean kids' Cartoon Network.

It's a shame because I'd prefer they just do another Robot Chicken Star Wars. I mean its always been funny and they've gotten George Lucas and Mark Hammil on it. This just seems bad.

That's exactly what this is...cashing in on Robot Chicken's success, and stretching the humor to it's breaking point and beyond.

The reason why Robot Chicken does so well, is because they stop with a certain joke before it gets old, and roll right into the next. It seems like this is just taking those same jokes, and stretching it paper thin to fit it all into a 30 minute block.

These jokes didn't even seem funny when they were out. Like it's a lot of the same humor you see on bad Cartoon Network/Nickelodeon "comedies". A lot of people hitting each other and talking funny. The original Robot Chicken stuff was very funny since it was often parodies or references to Star Wars. Kids probably won't get it though so they went this route. Star Wars in recent years has been marketing obsessively to kids and its sad that it lost a lot of what the franchise was really about. I'm hoping Star Wars 1313 reminds Lucas that there's still a passionate adult crowd out there wanting more adult Star Wars stuff. Things that were as mature as (or more mature) than the original trilogy.

Even Lego Star Wars: The Padawan Menace was funnier than that.
Why does Star Wars go to such lengths to glorify itself, especially the original trilogy?
Yeah yeah everyone hates Jar Jar Binks, it's a trap, we get it already.

But this Detours thing in particular looks obnoxiously acted and designed. Why do so many of the characters have the dimensions of a South Park character with no rhyme or reason?

There are more previews, it looks like trash, but still better than Robot Chicken. I realize the setup of Robot Chicken is if you don't like one skit, the next one is right around the corner. I think that is an AWFUL excuse for releasing unwatchable filler. If a show is primarily a "comedy" and the humor isn't at least 70% funny on a consistent basis, it makes me want to eat a box of thumbtacks.

Welcome to the world of sketch comedy. Not every sketch is going to appeal to everyone and not every group of comedians and/or miscellaneous funny people knows what will hit and what will miss with audiences. At least with Robot Chicken, if it's not funny it's done. If it is, then it's great. It's not something horrible like SNL which will drag a sketch for what feels like an eternity.
