So according to Iwata Asks NSMB2 was developed by a Mario cram school, basically noobs who have never developed a retail mario game before. This explains why this games looks kinda on the downside, not really a step up from the DS version.

From other interviews I've read, Super Mario 3D land was developed by EAD B team which was somewhat decent and a little refreshing.

The NSMBW/Galaxy team ( EAD A team) are working on the Wii U version so that's why the game looks somewhat better than this 3DS version.

This clears a lot up why this game has turned out to be.

Here are some quotes below.

- This time, development didn’t start with new mechanics, it started with course design. New mechanics were added in later.
- The team that researched course design for this game included participant in what is called “Mario Cram School.” It’s a group of developers from various departments who were shown how to make levels for Super Mario games.
- Mario Cram School was started by Takashi Tezuka to spread the knowledge of how to make Mario games among more individuals within Nintendo. Toshihiko Nakago, a longtime developer of the series, was also heavily involved.
- Some of the courses made by the Cram School involved double the staff usually used for Mario games. The results were fun and unique.
- Amano feels like he was tricked into being director of New Super Mario Bros. 2 by being subjected to the Cram School courses.
- He was chosen because there is another Mario game in development: New Super Mario Bros. U. Nintendo wanted to get both games ready as soon as possible.

- Ishikawa: “A little before Mario Kart 7, there was Super Mario 3D Land, which was close to a traditional Super Mario game in that it was made in a classic direction, so I thought, ‘Whoever’s in charge of the next 2D Super Mario game will have a real hard time!’”
- The team behind New Super Mario Bros. 2 consists of mostly developers who are new to the franchise. “Developers with experience in 2D Super Mario are working on Super Mario for the Wii U right now.” A large part of the team consists of members of Software Planning & Development Department

I knew it, console Mario is where it's at, didn't like NSMB on ds but the Wii version was fantastic.
NSMB2 seems to be a more of the same type of game while NSMBU looks more like an expansion or a continuation of that world, bringing new concepts and mechanics.
Kind of like how SMG2 was compared to SMG.

While I'm tired of the style they are using for NSMBU at least I know they won't be reusing music, tiles and backgrounds the same way 2 will.
I hope they end the NSMB series with a bang and develop a new style a couple of years later.
SM 1,2(USA),3 and World are very different from each other when it comes to mechanics, music and style.
Same thing with 64, Sunshine and Galaxy, they are all unique experiences and it's almost as if the only thing they have in common is that they all have characters from the Mario universe.

I really hope they not only revamp and refine but also bring something completely different with future titles.

No wonder the new games are cheaper than the rest of the titles. It's just $70+ compared to the usual $89. (For the Japanese version)

Apparently they have been making mistakes like Paratroopas having Green shells, even those that fly in the air rather than hop off the ground.

That's a big mistake, the different colour shells are used to identify AI patterns, if a Paratroopa flies in a pattern in the air without touching the ground, it has a red shell.

Well this is obvious! Especially seeing 3D Land only wrapped up late last year and the Wii U game was only a few months away and just looked a lot more polished and had more thought put into it, for me NSMB2 looks something like an advanced fan project. The levels I saw weren't of the usual Nintendo quality, levels in Mario platformers always seem to have a lot more paid attention to them so that they work with the gameplay and environments...this one they look a bit slap dashed. Maybe one day I'll play it and I'll be proved wrong like with the Wii game.

I do like the look of the Wii U game, it's definitely a title I'll grab along with Pikmin 3 & ZombiU if I can afford to get a Wii U. It's more SMW (just like the Wii game) than SMB1. I've read some previews of it and there are some interesting gameplay mechanisms added to it and also the graphical style. They've also cleaned the look of game up (obviously seeing it's the first HD Mario) and put more detail into backgrounds and platforms, a lot are saying that you really have to see it on an actual Wii U to appreciate it. I hope it's a long game though, NSMB games just don't last as long as the likes of SMB3 or World.

One wonders how much of this game has Miyamoto has over seen...maybe he wasn't even involved! With the Mario, Zelda's etc he always has to over see them to make sure they do things right, it's his job and it is why he doesn't make as many games or play as many games as he used to. I know stuff like that really annoys him, he likes the basic elements to be the same in all of the Mario platformers.

WHAT? Only RED paratroopas can fly in the air? lolno

Look here at about 0:40

Also, the first level of NSMBW:

At 3:20 you can see a couple of red paratroopas just chilling around NOT flying.

Is the music in the video at 0:50 also in the game? Cause I really like. It sounds very Donkey Kong-ish.
The game looks fantastic and I can't wait to play it!
It's a remixed version of a theme that was in NSMBWii :/
It's cool but not new sadly.

I'd say they seem eager to throw the team under the bus, but that would be inaccurate.

This is more like throwing the team under a steamroller.

Ick, explains a few things. I am still turned off to the whole coins flipping everywhere idea. To be perfectly honest, the concept of collecting all these coins seems much more suited for a Wario game.
But seriously, why in the world did they take such a risk and let a newbie team handle mario? Is nintendo THAT overconfident that its mario games will sell thousands of copies no matter what it looks like? I guess that answers itself...

No doubt if this was a pretty bad game, which I doubt it is, they would have canned it sometime before announcing the game. It would be very damaging for this series (obviously not the other Mario spin-offs) for this to have been a bad title. The reviews themselves do indicate the title is of some quality so if the concept appeals to you then you're probably in for a good time.

New teams have to start somewhere. Miyamoto was extremely inexperienced and didn't know a single thing about game design, before all he had done was art for Sheriff before he was put to work on Radar Scope. Nintendo takes risks (some good some bad), it's why it has always made shitloads of money since entering the video game business.

No doubt they actually looked to see what the team was capable first of all before getting them to start. Plus this team also had Tezuka producing (he's been on every Mario platformer) involved Amano directing it (he directed the first DS game ) who are both very experienced in making Mario games and are experienced in getting good work out of their people.

Yes. As long as there are little kiddies in this world. It WILL sell. It's like pokemon.

The people who are developing it do have at least some experience with the Mario franchise. The new developers had to attend a cram school to gain experience.
As for whether Miyamoto's involved, I recall reading that he initilly rejected the idea of the coin-box power up (although he later ap[proved of it when he ws explained how it worked), so I magine tht he was involved in some way. I doubt that he played a big part in the game's creation, though.
