Basically I just want the dang slot machine. So like I said, I can translate text myself with hex editor if I need.

I know I could translate things that have text printed on an image, but this would take lots of work since I can't seem to get the images out of the rom for editing.

Or is the 100% of ALL TEXT in the game actually text?

If not a translation with all images translated would be nice.

or maybe I could patch the game corner back to how it was back in my day like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7-9qXGFhdk

any help or pointers would be appreciated

thanks

I have the english version usa with the pokewalker, but i want my slot machine back.

I have been looking into the roms with editing tools, and noticed that it appears both jap and usa have the same stuff only different language. anyone know which map (code name please)in the japanese version is the game corner?

In the English version the celadon game corner map code name is: T07SP0101
and the english verson goldenrod game corner map code name is: T25SP0101

In the japanese one, these two maps are there but have no functions movements etc, and the only script is End.

so, if I can find what map in the japanese one has the japanese game corner, i think i can at least figure out how to script the english game corner to run slot machine instead of voltorb flip.

Your topic is pretty misleading, sorry to say that.
By translation, people will be taking it as in a language text translation (Ex. Japanese -> English), in which the NPCs interact with the player.
But from what I'm seeing is that your main desire for HG/SS is to map hack the Game Corner and it's core.
Sorry to say that, but no one has ever decipher the Map Hacking of HG/SS as of now, so good luck with that!

People found that even if you hack the maps in, trying to use the slot machine starts voltorb flip. So it's not just a map hack.

So since translating the Japanese game into english is relatively easier (as in it's something people have the tools), it's something he wants to do.

Slot machines
Most graphics from the D/P slots game remain, including the Clefairy bonus mode. The slots had a design overhaul in Japan, but were replaced by a Voltorb Flip minigame for everyone else.

Leftover Game Corner map

In NTSC-US and EUR localizations of the Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, although the original Game Corner map from the Japanese version is no longer accessible in normal gameplay, it still remains within the game code and has a hexadecimal identifier of 0x0067. As in the Japanese versions, a TM78 Captivate can be obtained in the original Game Corner map. However, the dialogue for NPCs in this map has presumably been deleted, because speaking to any of the remaining NPCs gives only 'blank' text on the top screen. Coins and items from the Game Corner can still be purchased as normal, with visible text on the touch screen. Activating any of the slot machines will initiate the Voltorb Flip minigame.

So yeah, sounds like the script was removed (or at least relocated, but it'd seem odd to use the same script ID).

EDIT: Fucking formatting.

Thank you Rydian, that identifier may help me find what is needed.

Btw, in the japan version the english game corner exists but with no scripts, and i dont think the map is used, so hopefully the english version has the needed stuff for the slots, but is just not using them (as that would prolly make this easier)

If you want the Game Corner to have Slot Machines, it might be possible to:
-Switch map models from the Japanese and the English ROMs containing the Game Corner
-Switch the 'mini-game core' of the Game Corners (Coins -> Slots)
-Switch the text dialogue of the Game Corner, to 'match' the dialogue capabilities for the NPCs in there.
This is just to name a few...
I'd figure that it's possible after seeing this as a stepping stone:
http://gbatemp.net/topic/329485-hgss-hack-pokemon-fire-red-leaf-green-ds-remake/

I know this sounds irrelevant, but the reasons for US/EU in replacing the slots with flip coins is due to the
European Legislation that was passed recently, in banning any gambling simulation upon children's entertainment.

Now, I must ask, does anyone know if the celadon and goldenrod game corners in the japanese version use the same map, or are there two seperate maps?

I ask, because I have found the celadon game corner map in japanese, which is the same in english minus the text.

codename for celadon game corner slot map is: T07R0401

I get these codenames from PPRE which makes editing maps and stuff simple.

Now I have to find what file or files contain the slot machine in japan, and coin flip in english.

I have a sneaking suspicion (or maybe a hope) that like the map, the mechanics for the two games are probly in both versions, just not used.

If this is the case I will probly need to find the files for both flip and slot, or at least just slot.

If this is not the case and I end up having to put the slot file from japan into my game, then if i find the file for voltorb flip it will probly be the same file in japan that holds the slot game.

I think that the second case is most likely as in both the english and japanese games "OpenCoinGame" is in the script that starts the slot/flip game

so if there is a file that holds the game, then we could just swap it. (too bad most of the files are named numbers O.o )

I also may take a look at D/P/PL for hints.

But If anyone knows whether the game corners in japan are both exactly the same, please let me know

Thanks

Ok, thank you riceball, this means I will need to find the goldenrod map.

Though my focus right now is finding the file containing the game itself.

Not sure, but i think maybe If I use hex editor to search some of the text that shows up within the game (voltorb flip) then I can find where the game is in the rom

after i find that I could search each archive 1 by 1 for the same parts i found in the rom until i find the archive that matches up with what i found in the rom

correct me if im wrong on this though

*edit* cannot find anything with hex editor, going back to console tool

*EDIT* I believe I found the location of the voltorb flip in the usa game i think its "\root\a\2\6\4"
that file however does not exist at all in the japanese version, so now I need to find the file in the japanese that has the slot machine game so I can see if it exists in the usa version, if so I can redirect to it
if not I will have to patch it in

*UPDATE*

I compared the files in the US and JAPAN roms of soulsilver and I found only two file differences (I have not compared files within the archives yet)

These 2 files are only in the english version, so i think (and hope) that the slot is still in the english version, but just not referenced

\contents\a\2\6\4 (Exists only in ENGLISH version) [Voltorb Flip Game?]
\data\str2uni.bin (Exists only in ENGLISH version) [??]

*Edit* *UPDATE again*

I have completed the finding of the maps, now just need to find a slot machine narc

maps are as follows (codename is name of map in japanese version) (V=Voltorb, S=Slots, CN=Codename, #=Map number)

Celadon V Game Corner - # 537 - CN: T07SP0101
Celadon S Game Corner - # 381 - CN: T07R0401
Goldenr V Game Corner - # 536 - CN: T25SP0101
Goldenr S Game Corner - # 183 - CN: T25R1101

now once we figure out which file holds the slot machine game itself, we can make a patch, and it will be back to the way it is supposed to be

*edit*

can a moderator please change the title of this thread to something more suitable, since the focus has turned from translation to hack

All thats left to do now is the hard/meticulous part
(finding the slot machine game)

*Edit*

So, I found a bunch of files that differ in size between the versions, i might try swapping combinations of them. (I already deleted the voltorb flip from my working directory)

here is a list of what i found that differs

\contents\a\0\1\2
\contents\a\0\1\2
\contents\a\0\1\6

\contents\a\0\2\7
\contents\a\0\2\9

\contents\a\0\4\6

\contents\a\0\6\8

\contents\a\1\5\5

\contents\a\1\6\7

\contents\a\1\7\7

\contents\a\1\9\8

\contents\a\2\1\9

\contents\data\eoo.dat
\contents\data\gsbr.dat
\contents\data\utility.bin

\contents\dwc\utility.bin

If this were to be a Pokemon hack,
then wouldn't this thread be needed to be approved by the GBATemp Admins?

Anyhow, good luck with your project!
I think that only applies if he is going to be making a patch for everyone to access, if it is only for himself then I believe this is fine... cbowling816 may want to check to be sure though
