Eh, I'm not really a fan of immersion in games, in fact I hate getting up off the couch just to swing the sword in Skyward Sword. Maybe progress but I would rather just have a nice desktop sized monitor then a pair of goggles.

Holy fuck, this is awesome. The wide field of view would really help me get immersed vs. existing VR displays.

My only complaint is that the display is a bit low-res (640x800 for each eye) but otherwise, I'm in love. Hopefully they'll release a higher res display later on.

You don't have to get off your couch to swing the sword...

Stereoscopy still looks like cardboard cut-outs to me and rarely any movies/games are really "done well" in the 3D department. If we can't film a movie in proper, immersive 3D, I can't seem to shake off the layer of doubt when I look at this product. If it's affordable and on display sometime in the nearby future, I'm more than willing to give it a go or even buy it if I find it impressive. For now though, I remain skeptical. :P
Clearly you don't own a 3DS (or I would think, a modern 3D display). 3D at this point in time is done really well in a lot of games. It isn't a cardboard cutout effect with most 3DS games but more of a fishbowl effect which makes you feel like you're actually in the world.

MGS: Snake Eater 3D showcases this the best. With headphones on (incredible sound-quality) and 3D to the max, the game is extremely immersive. In the forest at night, the birds chirping near me with the virtual surround sound and the 3D at max makes me feel like I'm actually walking in the forest and it's really an amazing feeling.

That's precisely why I'll be buying a PS3, MGS: HD Collection and this headset the second it becomes compatible with major consoles!

Way to capitalize on one example and miss the point once again Soul.

And im saying your missing the point.
which is what?

That im pretty lazy and not really one for immersion.

Why? Is there seriously ever a downside to this sort of thing, ever? Because this looks fucking awesome. Imagine games like Amnesia, Slender, LA Noire, or Skyrim with one of these. I mean, the horror ones have obvious uses, but games like the latter two would be so fucking amazing if you could get that next level of immersion.

WE'RE IN THE FUCKING FUTURE NOW, BE ENTHUSED.

Yes and I'm simply pointing out that there is no need to get off the couch to swing the Wiimote.
Eh, if you think so.

Getting immersed in a game doesn't take any effort. If the game is good enough, that should happen on its own.

Are you referring to immersion in general, or technologies that try to take that immersion to the next level (like the Rift)?
I mean both kinds. I personally dont like playing games for an experience that feels more real then it is, not that I think its a bad thing, and I do think it shows off how far the industry has come in only 20 or so years. Its just that personally I like playing games for what they are, games.

Nah, I think its cool and all, its just not really what I look for when it comes to games. I mean, games like Skyrim and Amnesia are the kind that are trying to make a fantasy as real as it can come, while it makes for great gameplay elements (Skyrims beautiful and dynamic world and Amnesia's creative physic mechanics) I just personally am not interested in what it adds to games.

How will they make it affordable for the common gamer? That's the question if they're looking to take the tech mainstream. Slender or Amnesia on this thing would have to come with a free pack of adult diapers. ;P

I live near one of the biggest IMAX 3D state-of-the-art cinemas in my country which I frequent, my girlfriend owns a 3DS (I don't want one before it's hacked. To be honest, I just don't find the library interesting at this point and prefere to invest my money in retro consoles) so obviously I played on it on multiple occasions and I check out quite a few of 3D TV's whenever I'm shopping and guess what? I am not (all that) impressed.

The so-called "fishbowl effect" you're referencing here is a limitation of the paralax barrier technology, not a quality, you do realize that? ;)

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.
