Bad thing about Friend Codes is that most games are friend-only, and your friend must also register you, if you dont have real life friend with that console its hard to do.
Even worse is most games dont have online multiplayer but only local - its IMPOSSIBLE for me to play them because only about 4 people have DS 10 have Wii and 13 have 3DS IN WHOLE COUNTRY.
EDIT: typos

Friend codes are there to protect the kiddies, though I don't like it I see there reason for having it.

Not a big deal to me, like at all. My phone number is 10 digits (11 if you count the +1, but I'm certain my phone does has an option that does it for me.) Being able to change your display name, at will, for free, is definitely worth entering an extra digit on what would be a cellphone number to me. It's just like entering a phone number - a one time deal. It's easier with a username - that much I can certainly appreciate, but the ability to change names and the usability of the numbers in general is worth it for me.

At least, for the 3DS. If it's the same system, I'm cool. But I can see why others would be upset.

Best guess? You have account names and screen names like Nintendo's forums, but each person will to but in a code to confirm they know each other when adding friends. Nintendo has been playing big brother since the snes. Remember the green slim in place of blood for Mortal Kombat. Nintendo will never change their watchful and overprotected ways.

How many people have ever added you out of the blue from an online game?
I've had so many randoms add me on PSN that I had to block invites altogether. Everyday I was getting spammed with new people, and I rarely play games online outside of with people I know. Most of the people who send me friend requests are people browsing the PS Vita forum on the official PlayStation website. They can see that I'm a top 5 contributor in the Vita section even though I haven't used those forums in months. I'm not saying that using friend codes is a great thing, but I'm all for any way to keep people I don't know from adding me. It might not seem like a big deal at first to get random invites, but it's extremely annoying when you get constant notifications of friend invites on the PS Vita when you're trying to play a game. I prefer to play mostly single player games with the occasional online game here and there, but I don't want to be bothered by randoms on the Wii U or any other handheld or console for that matter.

i think it would have been to have an ip address - domain name kind of system. everyone will have their unique username which they can make and use it for adding others but the friends code would be used to uniquely (in programming terms) identify u on the nintendo network. but for that they already have the mac address of every system so i dont see why they REALLY need friend codes. its cumbersome.

still u can live with it

that's 2 strikes for the wiiu

1. no 1080p
2. fucking friend codes!
Except none of those things are confirmed.

The event had demos, not finalized games, plus, those games were running in 60fps with full AA.
The Wii U have more than enough capable hardware to run any PS3 game in 1080p, why the hell would a 2D Mario be different?

Friend codes are gone according to developers, Reggie is just clueless as always... NoJ are the ones developing the infrastructures and they are the ones we should listen to not Reggie who has been wrong before.

Nintendo is fine with online that involves you to interact with others without the need to add each other, third parties are already making games that support voice chat with any non befriended player.

They already confirmed Nintendo Network for both 3DS and Wii U, Nintendo isn't the same company as before when it comes to online and ratings, as they know that the esrb and parental controls can cover them up if in case something happens. Things they couldn't rely on back when they often were getting sued.
In Japan however SNES games had all kinds of sexual and violent content, things that NoA had to remove in case some stupid parent would start complaining.
NoJ had no problem with it, American parents did.

They have obviously been making changes to controllers and other hardware in order to accommodate the "hardcore" gamer. In interviews Iwata said that he wants to improve the things the Wii failed with, namely hardware and online.
They want to compete with future gen, not the current one. They said that casuals isn't their market and how it's much smaller than before, they want the more reliable core back as they give them even better financial profit, this is all said by Iwata and it contradicts what people usually like to think.
Third parties have have commented and said great things about the specs recently, it is going to be comparable with other next gen system, the leaked spec sheet says the same thing. It's impossible to have another Wii situation with todays tech because of both availability and prices. They've already explicitly stated that they want to move away from the Wii.
They only kept the name for a few initial brand recognition sales, Iwata said that they want to change the brand reputation, he even admits that it's going to be a very hard task, reading his statements really makes you understand how guilty he feels for the split market that the Wii partially caused.

Though I must add that everything he has said are still promises at this point as they still have to prove them selfs.

Friend codes, barely acceptable for the DS, defiantly not ok for the Weeuuuu

The friend code system has been in place since the NDS. Too late to completely drop it, no?

I think FCs will exist along side with a simpler system, and FCs will eventually be phased out as less people rely on that system. (Maybe that's why the NFC reader is there? :>)

Am I the only one who thinks that the friend codes are going to be changeable like usernames? And even if not, shut the hell up and just don't buy the console. Half of you who are whining about this have said you don't want it anyway. Its not like its 1 code per game. Its ONE code ONE time. Its not that fucking hard. And even Steam and XBL have ID numbers, ever think its just that with a fun name? When its confirmed then start bashing it.

1. no 1080p
Not confirmed, and even if you read that article and believe it, that's not what they said. The Wii U will have 1080p.
Wii U launch games will run at 720p confirms Nintendo
I know about that, in fact I even acknowledged it in my post, I repeat:

Oh yup. Later games will support 1080p but E3 2012: Using Two Wii U GamePads Will Affect Performance, Developers Say

...Wouldn't that actually negate any negative impact coming from the topic you posted just recently?
