What pisses me off is all the idiotic "Like if you..." and "WANT 2000 FRIENDS/STRANGERS? Subscribe!" shit. It needs to go away. Very annoying, as I have some idiotic and over-dramaric people...

He says it will be the continued emergence of the mobile web — and Facebook's struggle to adapt to that paradigm shift.
Maybe if their mobile app didn't suck...

"I think those who are dominant in their prior generation are really going to have a hard time moving into this newer generation.
I agree with him here. We already see so many "old" companies that have no clue how to market things to the current generation.

Exactly! Like, why the hell cant I download pictures from the Facebook mobile app? I have to open my browser and find the damn pic just to keep it. Doesn't this defeat the purpose of having the damn app?

I don't have a facebook or twitter, I never will. You Want to talk shit to me? Phone me! :)

Pisses me off now in real life situations too. "hey, what's your facebook?" it's not even "do you have a facebook?" anymore, People just assume you have one like it's an everyday appliance.

I only recently made a Facebook (like, in January) and I've never encountered any of the idiocy you all describe. In fact, I'd be daring to describe my Facebook experience as "rather pleasant". I'm guessing it's either because all that idiocy is exclusive to America, or because the only people on my friend list are people I know in real life.

I personally don't mind FB so I don't really understand all the hatred. If it's there, good. Removed? Meh. No biggie. And c'mon. Let's face it. You are the one to choose what you want to put on FB. I am basically a ninja on FB. LOL Even without FB, famehoes (if you will pardon the language) will find another method to .... well... umm.. be what they are. :\

If we were to really think about it, we also go around asking "What's your number?" rather than "Do you have a phone?". Just sayin' XD

I linked it up in the facebook IPO thread but worth it again http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/26/opinion/nocera-facebooks-brilliant-disaster.html?_r=1 (short version should the price have to go up on the IPO and is short term really a good thing to go for?)

As others have said AOL would never die... yeah, myspace had "made it", Sun not being a player, Kodak... you can all look up businesses that failed, folded and got purchased by one time competitors.

Yahoo down on the "height of 2000"... you mean the height of the dot com bubble? Say it ain't so.

Anyway I think I might have something positive to say about facebook- as long as it continues to act as the idiot corral and a good chunk of those people consider it the internet I am OK with that.

Of course in many ways I am a luddite and the closest I get to having anything social media related is either this place or that I have a skype account and that was mainly because my grandparents 8 time zones away managed to set one up by themselves. I have yet to be asked what my the name of my facebook account is though and people finally seem to have stopped giving me odd looks when I say I do not have a mobile phone and the few years I did have one (a little £30 special pay as you go thing I topped up with a tenner all of once in three years which had an unfortunate accident the very first second it could) it might as well have been a landline.

Facebook as one stop authentication shop... I would have liked it to be something else (google were doing OK on this for a while and were probably as bad/worse on the uncomfortable feeling thing) but I have not really seen anything else) but between sites with less than top notch security and people using the same email and password to sign in everywhere or storing the things in the browser (thank you nirsoft for your lovely tools to get them by the way) when push comes to shove I think it might even be a net positive. Not a true positive of course but a net one.

Facebook was over-valued, simply put. When the stocks launched it was placed higher than some of the very large oil companies, and you have to think that Facebook doesn't actually give anybody anything, it's just a service and it makes its money mainly through advertisements, whereas oil companies are producing goods for the general consumption. Just because Facebook has millions of users, which a lot of are fake/double/dormant accounts, then no wonder the stock value fell.

But Internet websites like Facebook go in and out of 'trend' quite quickly- look at Yahoo and even MySpace. Sure, MySpace never reached the heights of Facebook but that doesn't mean that some other social media site will come along and steal some of Facebook's share.

In my opinion, I don't think Facebook will be all that popular in a few years time. It can't keep growing and growing because there's only so many people that can have a Facebook account and people will eventually get bored of reading the same old status updates ("got work in the morning, BOOO" or "like for a rate", grrrr). But who knows, it's a market that no one really fully understands.

You say that Livin in a box but your opening paragraph would not be entirely unfitting if every instance of facebook was replaced with google who are also an ad merchant first and offer a bunch of similar services elsewhere.

Equally I like widgets and production/extraction of real things as much as anyone but it is not the main game in the world any more.

I suppose, but Facebook is quite different from Google and nowhere near as diverse. I think though that online stores and services is definitely where we are headed, but I don't know if Facebook is one of those that is going to be around forever :/

I'm the same way. I dont have hundreds of friends. I only use Facebook to keep in touch with my close friends and family. anytime some random person ask me for a friend request, I just ignore it. Aside from that I also use Facebook to keep up with my hobbies.

Well, if I was the type that believed in conspiracies, I'd say that it was retaliation for jumping ship. LOL, the IRS was like: "Oh no he didn't! We can't have famous billionaire chickens flying the coop!" :P

To be fair, if I was that rich and saw the current trend in emmigration laws, I'd be trying to sneak my billions out before it was taxable, too. One year 30%, next year 50%, next year 2/3rds... No sane person would accept that risk.

So we'll be free of the endless idiotic statuses and farmville requests? Boohoo.

I've predicted this, as well as the fall of Social Media. In the not-so-far future, I believe that we'll have already evolved past Social Media and gone into some medium that allows us to almost literally be connected to the rest of the world. I'd say something similar to Eden of the East.

Love that anime :3
