There are 3 3DS units in my house. They average a Streetpass hit every 6 hours or so between them (each machine gets tagged by the other 2.)

I've noticed that the tags stagger, sometimes by as much as an hour. Like this:

Unit 1 tags Unit 2.
Unit 2 Tags Unit 1 back.
Hour goes by.
Unit 3 tags Units 1 & 2. Both tag back.

At home, this is odd but whatever. The strange part is if I take all 3 out with me. Unit 1 might get tagged. Unit 2 and 3 don't. Or it might be 2, and not 1 and 3.

Sometimes 2 are tagged. I've never had all 3 tagged by the same passing Streetpass hit.

I can guess they check in cycles, but having just 1 hit and not the others baffles me. Any ideas why this happens?

Added a 4th unit after a particularly good deal at my favorite independent used game store. Sure enough, the other 3 got tagged in cycles, 1, then about a minute later for the other 2. The new one now tags the others about 4 hours after the first 3 tag themselves.

And sure enough, had all 4 out for a mall walk and the new one got tagged, while the others didn't. I'm wondering just how often the machines check for streetpass tags now. I'm reasonably sure it's in 2-5 minute cycles. Maybe to save battery life.

I've heard everytime you change the 3DS's internal date you'll have to wait 24 hours and streetpass will tag counting from there

you are awesome.

also, try shutting them all down and booting them up at the same time. that should shorten the gaps somewhat, seeing as they all ping out at roughly the same time.

I've done that, even left them off for 8 hours. Still have the odd sync issue between the 4, though.

Had them with me while at work because I was headed near Allentown and a very large mall to pick up a client, and 3 got tagged, one didn't. Has to be in some sort of cycle, but I think it's probably closer to 2 minutes than 5, judging by the times my own units tag each other.

If there was only a way to spoof a Streetpass tag, I'd probably be able to answer this better.

the real clinch there would be to know whether or not the 3DS can streetpass while online (say, there's a valid hotspot nearby), and whether or not multiple machines can "block each other out" depending on their frequencies. it could explain why some 3DS just don't tag another within a time frame. maybe it needs to shift to either a different frequency or match another frequency to sniff them out and do tags.

I don't think they can tag if online. Spotpass cancels out Streetpass. When closed, Streetpass takes over.

I'm basing it mostly on noticing that the only time one of mine has tagged another while open is while I'm in the Streetpass plaza.

so it can't multitask wifi functions (Spotpass and Streetpass at the same time)? what's the point of that dedicated wifi processor then? also, if Spotpass takes over, then it's pointless having a mifi open while going about your business then... i have a mifi device (one of those portable 3G hotspots) and i usually leave it on even while walking about, as i sometimes get the urge to browse the net to check stuff up.

Like I said, when the unit it closed, Streetpass takes over. When the unit is opened, it picks up any connected internet source. I have watched the units tag when one is open, but there wasn't any available wifi source to connect to (I was at work).

Generally, it also doesn't work when paying a game.

I'm wondering if maybe they cycle not so much in time but wifi channel. There's a bit of info over at 3DSbrew.org about how Streetpass works, ut it slides into jargon pretty quickly.

You heard wrong, they will tag at almost exactly 8 hours even if you have been tampering with the time to get more coins.

@sycho
I've noticed that too how the system being open or busy spotpassing can thwart streetpass hits. :P

I don't think messing with the internal clock means much in terms of Streetpass hits. It's almost always 8 hours, even with tampering. Maybe there's a second, internal clock.

Or, something else is the reason it's 8 hours.

If I have one 3DS and you have one 3DS we may have a street pass

If I have one, and you have two, then my 3DS will process one streetpass, then the another one.

So, if I just pass near you quickly, then, maybe my 3DS dont get enouth time to send information to all your 3DS.

8 hours then? We do streetpass with some friends from a nearby forum here, and those trying to cheat by changing the 3DS date won't tag any streetpass by until their next day o_o.

I'll do it when I'm bored.. xD

That's what I've been trying to figure out. Exactly how long it takes for all 4 to hit the same tag, so that maybe I can find out how long it takes for a Streetpass tag.

I know part of it has to do with how many games you have active for Streetpass, and Swapnote drags the whole thing to a crawl.

I haven't gotten a note from Swapnote via Streetpass, though.

Bought my girlfriend a 3DS today. Aside from it having some Eshop games on it (Bonus), it's given my set what appears to be another quirk.

Namely, phantom streetpasses.

Unit 1: Tagged and Tagged back.
Unit 2: Tagged and Tagged back.
Unit 3: Tagged. No tag back.
Unit 4: Tagged and Tagged back.

This is after repeated resets and reformats, trying to duplicate this. 3 times, this scenario, with different machinces getting a tag from the new one, but not sending a tag back.

I'm aware that theoretically it can get a tag from more than one machine at a time, but if 3 or more were sending in that moment, it seems to only pick the strongest signal, or the first 3 that get through.
