I have an African American Algebra I teacher.
Today I was listening to some music, He tells me to put up my MP3 Player. I do. He then says, " You know what, just give it here." and takes it away.
Now, in front of him are also some African American kids doing the EXACT SAME thing.

But guess what?

They don't get in trouble.

That teacher has alot of favoritism for African American kids. He lets them get away with LOADS of stuff, such as texting, eating, music, etc. but
apparently me and my friend can't.

I'm Asian and my friend is Caucasian.

Thoughts on what I should do?

Yeah thats all you can do, report to the principal or vice principal, if they ignore it make a complaint with your districts school board or local council

Either way you shouldnt be doing it, regardless of whether others get away with it or not, im sure that will be someone in a position of authorities opinion as well, just be apoligetic about it but state it still doesnt change the fact you feel discriminated against.

Some will think your just being a angry kid, but if your persistant they may investigate, also it doesnt hurt having other people complain as well, they'll take the complaint more seriously if its not just you complaining, it'll make it look like a genuine complaint and not a kid being angry about getting told off

First and foremost, I love it when people use the "African American" phrase when easily 80% of the so-called "African Americans" have never even seen Africa in the first place. I know it's just a phrase that's commonly used in the U.S but I still find it incredibly racist - why call someone an African person when he's not from Africa and in fact has no ties to Africa whatsoever anymore, he's just black.

Secondly, injustice or not, you're not supposed to listen to your MP3 player during classes. It's one thing to protest when something's pure injustice, completely another when you do something you're not supposed to do and usurp your right to do so because "others do it too".

Fair play, he may be closing an eye on the issue of black pupils doing the same thing, but did it ever cross your mind that he's doing you a favour anyways? If you want him to do the same thing to other students then just flat out say it "other people are also listening to MP3 players, take those away too just to be fair".

Which is incredibly pointless, don't you think? The way I see it, they deserved to be called full fledged Americans. It's like saying Caucasian-American or Asian-American - nobody says that. It's always African Americans, no other ethnicity has been placed in a phrase, I'm not even black and I notice that. Not to mention that alot of so-called African Americans are not of African decent - they're just black.

I really don't know why people are afraid to use colour as a distinctive feature, especially when sometimes it's really the only distinctive feature - people mixed in the past so many times that it's hard to find someone of African decent that's "born and breed", same goes to other ethnicities. If you want to be fair, call them Africans, just like you call Caucasians, Asians and Indians. I mean, Native Americans. Another dumb phrase.

About the African American thing...
Kids in my school get all mad when I call them 'Black", so what else can I call them?
Now about the MP3 issue...
If it is wrong anyways, then why didn't he take away that girls mp3 3 months ago? She had been listening to that thing about 3 months before, IN HIS FACE, without anything happening. He never addressed this, so I assumed that, if she's OK, why not me? Also, i had put it away like he asked me to, then changes his mind and takes it away. What?

You know there are many teachers in many schools who do the exact same thing. For every ethnicity possible.'White power' teachers, 'asian power' teachers.
You just happen to have the 'black power' teacher.
In my school career i've seen feminist teachers, chinese teachers who favour chinese kids, and teachers who worship absolute silence.
A real test to your academic achievement is how you work around these teachers. They are there to teach you and personal views will always define how its done.

I beg to differ, Asian-American is a fairly common term here, at least on the East coast.
I think you're thinking too much on it. They're just generally accepted terms. Just like '[censored]' was the accepted term two hundred years ago, African American is the currently accepted term. That may change in the future.

They're not - that's my whole point. The only characteristic feature of the so-called caucasians is the fact that they're white.

I know I dwell on it a little bit too much, but I think the world needs more generalized and universal terms. ;)

African-American is the commonly accepted term because most are descended from Africans (I guess we all are, technically, but that's besides the point). Asian-American, while not all that common where I live, is acceptable as well.

Really, no matter what term you use to designate someone as belonging to a particular ethnicity, it can be said to categorize a person on a single characteristic alone. There's some awkwardness around the use of the "black" (Some people are perfectly fine with it, while others consider it to be rude), so African American has become the standard, neutral term. The whole issue isn't ideal, sure, but that's language.

I guess you're right, however, if I were an "African-American" myself, I'm pretty sure that I would rather be refered to as "black" or just "American" rather then "African-American" or "Afro-American" simply because I have nothing in common with Africans other then my ethnicity, and judging by the family tree, even that could be debatable in many cases.

It's really one of those "Foxi's Random Ramblings", pay no attention to it. :P

No, I understand where you're coming from.

I think most people (in the US, at least) are fine with the term because it's referencing descent in a neutral, not-racially-charged way. Considering our nation's unfortunate history regarding slavery and racism, it's progress.

Plus, like I mentioned, we did originate in Africa, so referring to someone's descent as being African is correct %100 of the time (at least technically).

I think people are generally too concerned about ethnicity nowadays, too careful not to offend anyone, blinded by a past long gone and too stubborn to make the necessary steps to progress on a social level.

At the end of the day, words are words - it should be the meaning that we're concerned about the most. If I were Blueberry Blue, I would be the same person but God forbid if somebody says I'm a Forest-Polishman, I'm just a Polishman and I'm blue. ;)

It will truly be a glorious day when we finally get rid of those semi-joke semi-serious constraints of using neutral terms that can appease everyone while being completely remote from reality and just open our eyes to the reality we live in. :)
