I have a PS2 Slim (model SCPH-79001) and it has some odd issues with reading disks, even disks with very minimal non-circular scratches (like my FF7 disks). I've tried cleaning the lens with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Is there something wrong with my PS2, or do I just have bad disks? I'd rather it not be the latter.

That is achilles' heel of PS2. My slim stopped reading original dual layer discs, while sl and backups work fine. IMO you should think about calibrating laser or buying new one and replacing it.

PS. I strongly advise to find some professional rather than try to do it by yourself.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that turning on the Diagnostic Tool or whatever it's called usually results in a perfect disk reading. So perhaps the laser is just out of alignment or something.

This may sound like a stupid question, but did You try to run these discs on PC? Try to use DVDdecrypter or any such software to rip the content of your discs. Not only scratches may cause trouble with reading, direct sunlight can also damage them. If your FF7 CDs are original, they are 14 or so years old.

Well I have the Greatest Hits version...

I didn't think to try running them on PC.

If it's a retail disc, you may have a problem.

Lately PS1 discs have seen suffering oxidation and pockmarking. Optical media is far from permanent, and I have a feeling that the ink used in making the PS1 discs black have a hand in deteriorating the media.

Oh great...I'd have to mod my PS2 to play backup copies...
