I had a harsh realization today.

I've been around the internet a lot. I've watched a lot of TV and read a few magazines and newspapers also. One thing I have come to realize is that piracy has been touted as an enormous issue for the entertainment industry.

This article may seem unrelated to the 3DS hacking section of this humble forum, and it may well be in ways, as it really speaks to entertainment as a whole. Although, I feel this is as good a place as any to express my viewpoints.

My point here starts with how the entertainment industry has led us all to believe that piracy has effected them. They constantly complain about how people not buying their media has had a monetary impact on their business. Over time I've seen this bold lie start to spread it's way into the minds of the uninformed and infect them like a virus. More and more people have come to believe what they say and have now started to outright shun homebrew on systems and openness in this venue simply because of the fear of piracy.

Where did that fear come from?
It came from the entertainment industry telling you that they were losing money and making you think that they weren't going to make anymore media if it didn't stop.
They attacked you right were it hurt most. They threatened to take away the very thing that you go to them for.

Most people, in fact all people, I have ever seen have believed this lie.

Well I'm about to point out a small little fact, that I have never seen anyone point out before.

How do these companies distribute this media?

1. They develop the movie, music, software, game, whatever it may be.

*here comes the important part*

2. They SELL it to a retailer.

3. Profit.

4. Who cares if the retailer is able to sell the product to the consumer.
It's up to them.

If it doesn't sell. the retailer then puts it in the bargain bin and at least tries to make up for the loss.

My point as a whole, the entertainment industry IS NOT LOSING MONEY!
They are in fact making %100 profit.

It is the retailers that are losing money.

Everyone who has ever said that they want to buy a movie, game, software to "support" the company is wrong.

They have been caught up in the lie.

I realized this tonight and it blew my fucking mind.

I understand that if the retailer doesn't make money that they won't buy again.
I understand that.
My problem lies in the fact that the entertainment industry wants us to think that our individual sales detract from their profit.

EDIT: I've never seen an outcry from the retail industry.

This is relevant to all types of entertainment and would probably be more suited to general consoles, off topic, or BMT&M.
Do you have any thoughts to tie it more directly into the 3DS scene?

I guess, if you want to look at the bigger picture, what pisses me off is that they blame us for all their shortcomings. Even if piracy wasn't an issue, if they make a crap product and it doesn't sell, they blame us and usually the first scapegoat is piracy.

They already made every last dime off of it.

Fuck them. I buy all my games and I get treated like this?!?

No I don't have anything, other than the fact that everyone I see on this board is so afraid of a hacked 3DS and I don't think it's all bad.
If you or someone can move this thread to a more acceptable board then that would just be great.
I should probably refrain from posting things when I've been drinking.

Piracy does affect a lot of companies tho, big companies really don't give a damn most of the time, but they start cutting edges, like not localising a game in a certain region or not making a port for a platform for which it's easy to play copies (biggest example is the pc). Small time companies really might be affected by it, hell, I know that piracy is wrong, for that very reason I always buy a game if I like it, in my case, and for many others, piracy is just like a demo, but without restrictions and if they like, they buy.

Flaw in your view (not necessarily arguing piracy hits developers or not):
1. Awesome Game Part-I Released!
2. Developer distributes the game to retailers and take money as you say. (Developer: Our game is awesome blah blah. Retailers: Nice, we will sell it, hehe.)
3. Awesome Game Part-I doesn't sell well and retailers take the loss, as you suggest.
4. Awesome Game Part-II Released!
5. Developer tries to send the game to retailers and take the money. (Developer: Our game is awesome blah blah. Retailers: Fuck you. It doesn't sell well.)
6. Retailers won't take the game again.
7. Company shuts down after a while.

lol

Yes and I agree with you, but 9 times out of 10 that is because of either bad advertising or the game just sucked.

Not really, most games don't really have an advertising so to say, only ones from really big companies.
One of the reasons why several DS games were released with a somewhat limited suply, was because the developers were afraid the games wouldn't sell that much due to piracy, look at The World Ends With You for example and to some other great DS rpgs, they were awesome games, but their suply was pretty limited compared to games for other platforms for which was harder to hack.

Yeah TWEWY was a great game. Why did it not have any advertising? Did it have a new producer that hadn't produced any games before? If they had they would have shit loads of cash from all the other games they had produced and made %100 profit from.

I honestly can't remember.

Don't most bargain bins in stores contain used copies?
I've never actually paid much attention but when I think about it, i've never bought a "new" bargain bin game. It was always previously opened.
