Would this work for connecting an external USB HDD to the Wii's SD slot, to run GameCube backups via DML?

yes, but only up to 32gb drives are supported. And that thing is delicate. One slight bump and your are out of some decent money. You can buy a 32gb card for less than the cost of that thing.

Also, that will not work with 'portable' hard drives because the microsd slot does not put out enough power to power up a portable drive. It would have to be a drive that uses external power or a usb flash drive.

Maybe it will, but it's limited to a maximum capacity of 32GB. So, what's the point in using that instead of a 32Gig sdhc card?
It's not like you can connect your 500 gig harddrive to it...

The point is that the device was made for PDA's and some people carry around info on USB sticks rather then SD cards, especially at work. It's just an adapter.

I know what the device is meant for. I was wondering, what's the point in using it on the wii.

Didn't know/see that it was limited to 32GB. Thanks for the replies. :)
Reading generally helps answer those types of things for you :P ;)
No need to be an arse about it. :P

It's limited because that's the limit of SDHC cards which the adapter mimics.

...using USB sticks rather then SD's to boot DML? Some people find it more convinient. I'm not sure if it would even work though, the device is meant for PDA's.

I was wondering if it was possible to do this the other day. It's a good idea but looks too flimsy and expensive to be practical, I'd break that thing straight away lol

I feel the need to be an ass. :D

And of course it would work. If it's meant to mimic an actual micro SDHC card then there is no reason why it would not work on anything that can use a micro SDHC card

There's this thing Palmtops and PDA's use that's called "drivers" and some SDIO devices like this one require them. I've been through hell and back with SD Wi-Fi adapters on Windows Mobile afterall. (My oldie Mio A701 doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi... rest in peace, I don't use it anymore, the battery's a zombie) ;P

Yes. I've worked on hundreds of laptops that required you to install drivers for the card readers, but after that it reads every SD card. You don't need drivers for the SD card itself. And a SD wifi adapter is something completely different and unrelated to this and only works on specific devices.

I've seen this thing come up as a suggestion for swiss as well. Pretty hilarious: GC slot -> SD gecko -> SD-to-micro SD "convertor" -> SD to USB convertor -> USB drive.

While that should theoretically work as well (even without the 32GB limitation), nobody ever actually built that connector. Probably because a WODE isn't that much more expensive and is guaranteed to work.

The rule applies to every single SDIO device. ;)
