Hey guys and girls :D,

As the topic gives it away, i'm trying to setup a mail server on a vps i own.
So i googled and got a few guides and found this one to be the best and choose to follow this one:
Anyway after getting quite far down of basic setup i exited ssh. Tried logging back in to realize i had locked myself out with shorewall.
Luckily i'm not stupid and within 5-10 minutes managed to gain access again without reinstalling the OS or reverting to a backup.
Long story short i need help, i just don't know what's wrong. Maybe because it's a old guide (back from 2010) or something else.

If anyone knows what they're doing and would kindly help me and someone knows a better guide out there that i might of missed and not seen that would be great as i pay for my vps, why should i have to pay for email too when i can do it for free.

Thanks.

Though it's not a direct answer to your question.. I have a suggestion.
How many e-mail accounts do you intend to use with your domain?

If the answer is less than 5-10, I'd highly recommend:
  • just setting up Google Apps for Personal Use (my personal preferred option, as this gives me full GMail functionality through my personal domain, which includes IMAP & POP access)
OR
  • using an installable server app (usually through cpanel with VPS's) such as Squirrelmail or Horde -- would be nice to know if your VPS reseller supports cpanel or similar administration web-based interfaces

edit: this probably belongs in the Computers/Technology forum btw

Lol before posting i tried looking for a computer forum section but couldn't find it so assumed it was gone. Then after you mentioned it relooked and found it, ahaha. If a mod would like to move this.

Well if i have to pay i would use that or the one that i can get bundled with my domain really.
My vps does support cpanel and what not but obviously for extra money.
I thought (because in the guide i was using) setting up, squirrelmail, horde or roundcube (what i want to end up setting up) still requires setting the mail server up?
I'm in wrong tell me then i'll just use one of those and bada bing bada boom i'm on my way.
Though still learning how to set the server up would be good :).

Thanks.

cpanel has been such an industry standard for virtual server resellers for like 9 or 10 years now, i'm surprised you'd be charged extra.
charging extra for fantastico still seems normal, but that's for services that are more optional such as autoinstalling WordPress or content management systems (Portals) or forums.

i've had an "unlimited domain reseller" account through www.page-zone.com for 9 years now, and even their bottom tier service which is a few dollars a month has mail preconfigured and several different webmail interfaces for optional install (such as, squirrelmail and horde). of course you'd have to have your mail server set up, but page-zone creates that all automagically when you sign(ed) up.. however as far as DIY, that end of the service isn't my expertise.
i run something like 20 different individual domains on my reseller account (administration via WHM/CPanel) though and mail is one thing i've never had to think twice about setting up if all that was desired was traditional POP mail.

if you only want to get one account (or fewer than 5) set up for your domain, google apps is free, like i said. you will have to set up your DNS to point to google for mail exchange for that to work though. the step-by-step process is very well documented and easy to understand (although the part that tells you to create CNAME records omits the trailing "." dot at the end of the domains you're supposed to point shit to.. last time i checked o.O when I set up noun.org on it in January)

If you've used gmail and liked it, I think you'll be really pleased XD
Google Apps can't completely replace a regular Google Account though-- there are a bunch of services Google provides that aren't licensed to Apps for Domains.

edit: also, Google allows you to enable settings to be logged into multiple accounts, it's one of the reasons I put Google Apps on all the domains I wanted to use for email. swapping between the inboxes is pretty easy if you don't want to set up a mail client or forwarding.
