Hacking Is there any way to update to 4.2 w/o having to redo any exploits?

I've already softmodded my Wii - and I'm already running IOS58 with the HBC installed - is there any way to update to 4.2 w/o losing the HBC? I don't have any of the exploited wii games except for the Twilight Princess.

As for running on linux, try wine or vmware, otherwise, use a friends/relatives computer running windows

If you're running the latest HBC then upgrading online should be safe. You will need to re-install any CIOS afterwards though.
I recently helped someone install HBC on their 4.0 wii and afterwards they upgraded online and it was still there. I've always upgraded online.

There are other ways, but if you consider modmii "taking a risk", then they all pose the same risk with either your computer system and/or your wii.

On the plus side: there is little to no reason to upgrade in the first place. Just go ahead and check the version history of the wii menus. There's hardly anything to gain, and games flat out lie when they say they "need" to perform a firmware update (though that only becomes apparent if you actually block the message from showing up).

BTW...What virus scanner are you using that you (apparently) get a warning? I'm using avast and it never even blinks.

Then you should just stay away from the whole wii hacking buisness. If you think ModMii is a risk - everything else will cause your PC to explode.

I just used virustotal.com - but first used clamtk - nothing came up in clamtk

But how would I re-install the CIOS? I dont have any exploits that could help me re-install it - unless I don't need to considering the HomeBrewChannel still works?

No, you want to update to 4.1U. Then you get the latest features and bugfixes without all the drawbacks of 4.2/4.3. I have no idea why that guide has you install 4.2, because there is no point in it unless you want an inferior softmod.

No. You see, a "firmware update" on a wii is at its basics nothing more than an update of the containing IOS, the channels and the system menu (which can be considered a channel in itself). If you update that manually, you will have the exact same wii as someone who clicks the "update firmware" button on the wii menu.

...with one exception: the official update process will remove the HBC (unless it's the latest version) and most cIOS'es. That's when you'll need to rehack your wii (read: reinstall cIOS'es and/or the HBC).

Those updated IOS'es and channels come in the form of wads that have to be installed on your wii through a wad manager. And how to get the wads? Well...modmii would have been the easy, almost one-click solution. You can use NUSD for it as well, but it's a bit harder to find exactly what you need (and for all it's worth, it can sprout up false positives as well). But the guide JoostinOline threw at you should tell you that as well. But if that isn't clear enough...I'm sorry, but I'm going to repeat Lucif3r's opinion that hacking isn't for you. This isn't some sort of humorous thing: you really shouldn't mess with stuff you don't know. We've had more than one guy here who bricked their wii because they didn't grasp the basics of what the guide was telling them (assuming the guide was good to begin with).

Sure, you can ask all the questions you don't know an answer for. But in the end, it's still your wii...and your responsibility.

1. No, I told him to follow update.zip, which would just update the SM and ios's. It isn't dangerous or stupid. It could be pointless to us, but if he wants to be on 4.2, then who are we to stop him?
2. It doesn't change his current cIOS setup. Which reminds me, after you bashed the cIOS setup in another thread, I asked why, and you never answered.

Erm...you DO know that the latest official version of IOS70 (v6912) is a stub, right? As long as your package includes v6687, then there's no problem. But just the fact that you don't even mention it is something I would consider dangerous.
