how did they do this?
The 3DS Dev Versions has a Port for connecting to a TV or is it a mod I never heard of?

I remember seeing gamespot having this little device sticking out of their 3DS during their OoT 3D review which allowed them to record the gameplay on a TV.
They said it was from Nintendo

Since it seems to be a Ninty-Official event that they're at, that 3DS is probably equipped with the adapter that Reggie has been seen using during interviews and things...

It is seen in this video:

is it just me or does this edition of mario kart look amazing. i can tell already it'll be far more enjoyable than the Wii version, super smooth, maybe even better looking than double dash. i think it'll be a close call for how it compares to the DS version and Double Dash for quality. it could be the best Mario Kart yet. if not it'll likely be close.

i haven't got a 3DS yet but i'm getting one specifically for this title, played every Mario Kart on day one since the SNES days :D

don't really care about Nintendo updating the 3DS next year, i can sell mine and upgrade if its really worthwhile. having this Mario Kart at launch >>>

hang on does anyone know if you can you snake properly (ie be good with mini turbos - key element of MK experience for me) in this version? if not that could be a big negative on the gameplay. IMO that ruined the Wii version and it looks like they've curbed it in this version too, daaamn :(

watching the videos it seems like there might still be some scope to be precise the mini turbo as it seems to charge much quicker than the wii. could be a nice comprimise between a mechanic allowing advanced players to get around faster and all out snaking, annoying the people who were too slow couldn't do it well. we'll see...

The mini-turbo system will work very similar to MKwii. I agree, it really 'dumbs down' the gameplay. However, I think without the option of using the Dpad, a game like MKDS, MKDD, or maybe even MK64 wouldn't work with the 3DS's thumbpad. It's far too fragile to be mashing left and right. The N64 controllers were weak, but at least you could just buy a new controller instead of buying a whole system like you would with the 3DS. People who played MKDS competitively went through several DS's, even though the Dpad was fairly strong. If you were playing with a lite, expect to go through twice as many DS's. So overall, I was dissapointed with the gameplay style but it is well suited to the 3DS; unless they give us the option to use a Dpad!

The biggest problem with MKwii is that it's too 'easy' and by that I mean it's too easy to max out a time. I had a WR around 2 months after the games release, and today the WR is only less than a second faster. Whereas people are still managing to knock tenths of seconds off MKDS WR's 6 years later. No body wants to keep playing if they can't improve their times. So MKwii didn't fail because it stopped the 'cheating snakers', it failed (at a competative standpoint) because the gameplay was too simple. It's still a great game to play casually, though. Here's hoping MK7 manages to appeal to us as well as the kiddies; it doesn't need snaking to do that, but it does need something that requires a bit of skill.

I play MKDS on my 3DS all the time (activity log clocks me at about 70 hours total) and I've had no problem with the thumb pad, and I'm a constant drifter. It's actually quite strong if you ask me. And a lot easier to use than the D-Pad. My only hope is that MK7 will feel the same with the thumb pad as MKDS does.

yeah, it needs some type of advanced handling mechanic, whatever that is. it seems like the gliders may provide scope for some of that, but drifting to generate mini turbos is by far the most fun and true to racing games to me. there's more of an art to how you adapt your sliding on the fly and makes for truly exciting matches against others. it's a pretty huge dissapointment now i've read more about the lack of sliding, enough to make me think twice about even getting the system and game in a couple of weeks :/

i'd rather just play an online edition of double dash, if such a thing existed. it's a shame cause the visuals for this version look sublime and super smooth too.

Snaking was ridiculously easy on the DS.
It just made the game too easy, making you able to pick up the game after learning how to snake and then just get 3 stars on all cups.
The Wii version though added more difficulty, from things such as many items at the other player's disposal.
So it makes the game a lot more challanging, I hope that MK7 is more like the Wii version than the DS version, even though i loved the DS version.

forget about the single player, sliding is the skill based mechanic that makes higher level multiplayer and time trialling so much fun. I've always thought SP in Mario Kart as kinda pointless beyond getting all the unlocks. without it the gameplay is really compromised, the Double Dash scene is so much better than the Wii one and the game too >> :(

Snaking was ridiculously easy on the DS.
Of course simply drifting back and fourth is easy, but is it easy to be good at?
It's such controversial mechanic because it 'isn't how karts should drive', however at the end of the day it is video game and since it was such an easy thing to do, it means anyone can do it, although it also leaves room for constant improvement. Even today, no one can play as fast as the TAS runs that people make on emulators.

It just made the game too easy, making you able to pick up the game after learning how to snake and then just get 3 stars on all cups.
Singler player, yeah. But even without snaking, it was still too easy to get 3 stars on all cups. For us, that is. I seen what looked to be a 6 year old enjoying the game only last weekend, and I guess they need to even out the computer difficulty for all age groups and skill levels.

The Wii version though added more difficulty, from things such as many items at the other player's disposal.

How else did it add more difficulty? Like I said, the gameplay mechanics are easy (like snaking) however there's no room to improve in MKwii. For example, snaking itself is easy but if you were to look at a WR run and try to copy it, you won't come close. Although if you look at a MKwii WR run, learn the strats, and try to emulate it, after only a week or so you'll be within a couple of seconds of the time at least.

I chose this video as an example of how snaking can be easy, but takes a crazy amount of time and skill to perfect - especially to become consistant enough to pull off 3 laps without missing an mini-turbo. Ignore the intro at the start... If you're wondering how he cut across the grass in the first lap, it's a glitch they call 'PRB' or prolonged rocket boost. If you get a perfect rocket boost (which doesn't let you lose speed over grass) at the start of the race, you can keep it by continously MT'ing, but the second your motor slows back down to normal speed you lose it. It's just another mechanic, even though it's a glitch, that makes MKDS that bit deeper.

Really? What's your Figure 8 circuit time? MK7 should feel better than the thumb pad with MKDS, since you'll have more control to slightly turn instead of it just triggering 'on' or 'off'.

On Figure 8 Circuit using Mario with the Tyrant kart my time is 1:35:258, but I don't really play Figure 8 Circuit. Too simple, On Rainbow Road my time is 2:12:996. (I don't drift on straight roads, btw. That's just cheating.)

The tyrant is pretty useless :P Try the BLS, you should be able to vastly improve your time. I only asked because F8C is a good indication of what leval someone is at. How long have you been playing? It's good to know people still play.

Too simple, On Rainbow Road my time is 2:12:996. (I don't drift on straight roads, btw. That's just cheating.)
Oh okay, then the 3DS thumb pad would still work fine for your type of gaming. I still don't see it lasting a whole lap of figure 8 circuit at a higher leval though.

Oh, and how is it cheating if you're playing yourself? Is it still cheating if no one is being cheated? lol It's okay, I knew someone once who was so against snaking (or straight stretch MT'ing) and always had something to say in a debate, but then he changed his view and became the world record holder of RR!

What kart did you use for RR? My community of karters created a leaderboard of non mini-turbo races a few years ago, the only rule being that you aren't allowed to MT, and the record is 2:05:805; so I know you can do better! Again, try the BLS, its handling takes a while to get used to but it's the best kart in the game for most tracks (only for 150cc time trials, the egg1 is better for 100cc wifi :P)

If you like RR, try out this! It's by the same guy who held the RR WR.
