I'm going to buy a PS3 off of craigslist, and it is 3.73. Is it hackable? I'd prefer a softmod, but I can solder a chip if I have to (Why do people think soldering is so hard?).
Sorry if it's a simple answer.

You can buy the E3 Flasher and downgrade to a hackable fw, pretty much the only way for people that have fws above 3.55 can hack it.

Wait, so I can simply downgrade then mod? Sony's security's a joke.
Also, so I have to downgrade to 3.55, that means no online play, even with my legit games?

Yep, no PSN when hacking, there is a dual boot one in the works that will allow you to dual boot both the CFW and the OFW, though it's not out yet.

BTW. downgrading will require you to open your PS3, here's the site where you can buy and get info on how to:

It's the real/offical website, the makers are probably foreign so the translation is probably going to suck, and their are other distributors if you don't trust the first one listed.

It a modchip and require a lot of hardware installation (though, no soldering should be needed), so be aware the downgrade process is not just done by connecting an USB device and running a program, you'll need to flash the NAND/NOR chipset manually.

As stated too, once you downgraded you can't change to another 3.55 firmware version (not even the official one), or you would brick the console.
I think updating is fine, but not reinstalling another 3.55.

Note that for the moment the dual boot is not working. You can only downgrade to 3.55 and that's all.

Theres a new dongle out that apparently bypasses the security check allowing any 3.6fw+ (including 3.73) games to be playable on 3.55, for those of yo who remember this is how the softmod began in the first place so I would give it a month or 2 and im sure they'll have this running without the use of the usb.

On goes the war

Released or in the works?
Also, should I wait for dual boot to work before buying a chip?

I'll just play some legit games for a while, and wait and see if this dongle is real. Because, 90$ is a bit much for a modchip imo, considering I'm paying 100 for the playstion itself.

the dongle is said to cost only $45 and does not play games off hdd but rather blu-ray.

I heard Blue Ray Disc Packs are only $10-$15; don't know cause I do not own a blue ray burner.

So you will probably be paying as much as $90 for alot more then what you would get for the modchip with little to no effort.

if your going to quote my post, please quote the whole thing so I don't sound like an idiot.... With that said go over to ps3-hacks and look at their news. Thank you...

P.S. I don't like to be made like i'm some mindless idiot. If you know something fine, if your don't fine I'm here to help. If your here to pick and choose.... Well find somebody else cause it's rather annoying and I will take offense. I have nothing more to discuss.

There's a way to access PS3 games burned disc for about a month now.
It was first made for playing media from disc instead of HDD, then came PS1/PS2 ripping, and finaly Dean made a "Disc boot" homebrew to launch a burned PS3 blu-ray game directly from XMB (no payload needed, only a cfw to install and launched homebrew).
So I guess the dongle is just a way to launch unsigned homebrew too, and would allow game launch from disc.
