Super Mario 64 gets a new PC port from the Harbour Masters team

Harbour Masters, the team behind such PC ports as Ship of Harkinian (Ocarina of Time), 2ship2harkinian (Majora's Mask), Spaghetti Kart (Mario Kart 64), and Starship (Star Fox 64), have today released a new project: Ghostship. A PC port of Super Mario 64, Ghostship currently promises to offer a simple install experience akin to their previous projects, as well as high refresh rate gameplay, a modern configuaration UI, a debug menu, level select, and texture pack support.

With the project still in its early stages, there's still more yet to come. The team also plan to add both custom model support and a randomiser to the title.

Those interested can download it from the project's GitHub page, with updates shared both there and via the team's Discord server. As with their previous releases, you will need a ROM file to acquire the game's assets from. Placing this in the same folder as the app, this process is automatic and about as seamless as it can be.

Not a bad thing to have an alternative right?
That in and of itself is fine, but woking on a rather obsolete project instead of finishing their current ones leaves a bit of a bad taste. 2ship2harkinian for example lacks support for European versions of the game unlike Ship of Harkinian. I wish they would concentrate on stuff like that instead. That being said, it's their time and effort and I am not entitled to anything, but still it doesn't make a lot of sense if the benefit is marginal.

Hope they'll port it to more platforms. The other ports lack mod support. These are the same people who ported OOT with randomiser to wii u, so i do think it is going to happen.

Mario 64 randomiser? What would that be like? Random enemies and random level teleports? I don't see how that would translate to this game well, Zelda games have many more things that make sense randomising.

It’s already been done. Randomising which paintings go where is the simplest level, but beyond that there’s things like ability randomiser that also limits your move set until you find it as a check, and also just straight up random star spawns. In Archipelago, you also have things like the bombs opening the canons as checks, as well as one up blocks.

It’s certainly not as extensive as a Zelda game, but it’s pretty fun either way. I think a Mario Sunshine rando also recently released, so thanks for putting my mind onto that. I’ll try to write up a post later lol

I need DLC and Battle Pass support. Then I may install it. Otherwise I still have the other PC port of Super Mario 64.

Thank goodness for a port that you don't have to compile manually to update. Also the number of different PC ports is insane, especially if, like me, all you want is the vanilla game with higher resolution and framerate (maybe experimenting with mods, but not in a way that requires compiling it again). I was hoping for a recomp project, but this works for now and is more portable to other platforms.

Hmm... I think it's okay. Honestly, I remember before trying to set up the msys2 program to get the exe and well.... I'm sure there are better ways now to compile with bevy of options. But the "Harbor masters" for ocarina of time was very simple to do and it came with easy customization built into the exe.

I think that's the point of having this for "SOME" people. So I hope it would make a more streamlined experienced. If only the n64 rom hacks would work with this, then it would be a huge momentum boost for all of us. as I checked years ago, most of the pc versions just look like texture and quality of life mods rather than a full game mod to give new challenges. Meanwhile there plenty of rom hacks for the n64 not focused just on texture mods. :ninja:

Can never have too many of those.
buuuuuut.... you know, what about Banjo and DK64??
not that i dont like 5 or 6 different mario 64 ports, but some variety might be fun, too.
True. The Banjo Kazooie decomp was finished a little while ago but nothing has come out of it so far. That game could really benefit from a native port. There aren't any proper HD texture packs for it and the 60 FPS hacks are buggy so a native port would blow the door open for such things. The only completed HD texture pack is the AI upscale that I made lol. Available on EmuTalk and my YouTube channel if anybody cares.
