Switch 2 name is kinda bad

I don't feel the Wii U did poorly due to the name. Not one, single, person I know thought it was just an add-on, Wii 1.5, or anything of the sort. Everyone I know in person and have ever spoken with knew full well it was an entirely new console. Imo it did poorly due to lack of games.
Hit the nail right on the head with that.
It is odd for them to call it Switch 2 though. At the end of the day I don't care what they do. I'm in no rush to get it.

Who do you think often buys their children consoles - "the nintendos" for Christmas?

Kid: I want a Wii U for Christmas!!!!
Parent: But you already have a Wii.
Kid: That's different. This is a new console.

I still stand by my opinion that the name wasn't the problem and that it didn't really cause that much confusion. Did it cause some confusion? Sure. I suppose for some it did. But I stand by that that is not what made it do poorly.

I’d argue that they were thinking beyond the Switch 2. The Switch 2 could very well lead the way to the Switch 3 and 4.
Ultra Switch, Mega Switch would have worked in those instances, I don't think it's about them thinking about the future.
I also hate how some people tend to say that « Nintendo wanted to avoid a Wii U situation », as if the Wii U was a disaster JUST because of the name.

The Switch 2, with its teaser, immediately made it very clear that it was a new console. Something that they failed to do with the Wii U because they were constantly talking about the gamepad. But the presentation (of the Switch 2) itself was clear enough that even if it were named some shit like « Switch + », sure it wouldn't have been AS CLEAR but it would be hard to realize that it's just a new console with a bad name. There's no experimentation needed for someone to think of something else other than just « 2 »

At that point, I feel like they were just shitting their pants so bad that they thought that people might confuse their Super Nintendo switch app to play retro games with the actual « Nintendo Super Switch » console or something stupid like that

I'd argue that "Mega Switch" and "Ultra Switch" sound like upgraded models of the existing Switch. Same with "Switch Plus."

I agree that the "Wii U" name wasn't the only issue, though I have referenced it a lot in these Switch 2 discussions.

The marketing plan for the Wii U and 3DS was a relative disaster. Nintendo just kind of released the Wii U and the 3DS, and they may have figured that the two together would have gotten the point across. However, the marketing wasn't strong enough to follow through. Customers had to be educated. This brings us back to the naming issue.

Reportedly, the Wii U sold less than the GameCube, and it sold less than the N64. The 3DS actually fared pretty well in sales.

A small reminder that 3DS had also poor start, bad name or not. The thing is 3DS got up from that and Wii U didn't, again bad name or not. For me Switch 2 can be even named Swap 2 Off. Switch "1" was already bad, what are the chances Switch 2 will be good with current makers and considering it's 2025? I think about as big as any of you going tomorrow at noon, buying a lottery ticket and winning 1st prize. It MAY happen sure, but don't count on it.

You're not seeing the whole picture.

The name itself implies many things that Nintendo has for their user base (me included ofc!). Nintendo -for the first time in their history- has "numbered" their next console, and that's not just a coincidence.

I'm really hyped to see it all when it finally releases!

I'm surprised on the amount of people who thinks that.

My take:

It's not gimmicky or different enough to not be associated with a Switch, yet it's not similar enough to one to call it a Switch Pro or whatever. It's supposed to be a familiar, yet new step in gaming, not just some upgrade. DSi and New 3DS had their exclusives, but that was the exception, not the rule. I'm confident it's gonna be the other way around this time.

"Switch 2" is the most straight to the point name you can think of. Yes, putting a "2" on a console is unprecedented for Nintendo, but the Switch was just that successful.

I'm not sure why there is so much discussion about the name. It seems like the least important part to me. If you really think about it, Nintendo has never been good at naming consoles anyway.

The name is not the singular reason it did poorly - but it most certainly was a factor.

You know what we should call Switch 2 instead?
Based on how their new joy-cons snap into place, Snap would be a better name than Switch 2. :D Regardless of the name, as long as original Switch games work better on the Switch 2 and it's possible to jailbreak it, I'd buy it, no doubt about. (Read: I'll buy it anyway. :D)

I totally agree with this. Maybe some people that are not really into consoles and stuff could mistake it for a Wii accessory, but still... I don't know, different name usually means it's a different thing. To me, new 3DS was the worse name pick than the Wii U. Still, both were awesome consoles to me for their time (Just don't pay those very demanding 3rd party games).

I *hate* how the new joycons plug in, something just seems.... wrong

Haha, I think it's because we don't have much else to talk about right now.

I appreciate that Nintendo did try to differentiate through names. The funny thing is that the "Super Nintendo" could have potentially had the "Wii U" problem, but the marketing was there. From Nintendo Power to promos, everyone knew the SNES was different from the original NES.

As bad as the name Reploid. :creep:
As a Mega Man X fan, I believe we are now in a feud.

Your mother's so foolish that, when your family was driving to Disneyland, she saw a sign that said "Disneyland left" so she drove everyone back home.

I disagree with this too because I want to disagree with everyone in this thread. In all seriousness, Switch Snap does sound like an add-on.

Funny how people mention Wii U but not the Xbox series X / S thing... that shit genuinelly confuses me. As the Nerd would say, what were they thinking?

I have no problem with the name because it shows that it's about the Switch name and it's concept is here to stay . It's a perfect concept of what core gamers want with the name it represents you can "Switch" the style you play adding new tech or methods goes with the progression of gaming and tech. 160+mil systems means you did something right.

As far as marketing could Nintendo start throwing up ✌️peace signs to represent 2 possibly or just keep it simple because in marketing it gets lost in translation across the world.

I think names like Super Switch and stuff only targets the core and not the casual gamer. People that play games today range from kids to grandparents 😂 which is amazing so keeping it simple is best once again

"New" and "U" were not perceived well so 3x a charm 🧿 was not going to happen. Especially in a culture that is very superstitious

Can't wait for future Switch tech and what other family of devices Nintendo is trying to develop

I mean... Has anyone actually *bought* one?
The Xbox has been a mess for a long time...
Xbox One, Xbox One S and One X, Xbox Series X and S - let's not even get into how the family name is "Xbox Series" lmfao
