Wii Shop revival service "RiiShop" enters public beta

Many people remember the Wii days fondly with its gimmick controls, memorable in-app music and homebrew friendly system. Ever since the discontinuation of the Wii Shop service back in January 30th, 2019, users could no longer purchase new titles through it, and were only left with the option to redownload already purchased titles.

Since then, a few homebrew developers have worked on a revival service, formerly known as "LaunchShop" to recreate the Wii Shop servers back when they were fully accessible. As of January 8th, 2024, this revival service has been rebranded into "RiiShop", and is now publicly available for Wii users in a WAD format.

The current open beta can be installed in homebrewed Wii systems as a WAD, and users can enter the Wii Shop menu and browse Virtual Console and WiiWare games, as well as Wii channels that were originally available, complete with what seems to be dummy Wii Points to redeem, but with nothing to do with them at the moment due to downloads not working on the current build yet. It's worth nothing that this will apparently work like a free Shop to download titles from, with no currency being involved.

As with any product in beta, expect some issues to pop up, and bare in mind that the public beta might not have download working, since many people online are reporting downloads not being possible as of yet.

Goddamn stop giving 14 year olds unfettered access to Discord.

This was a cool project completely ruined by immaturity and Discord drama. Great job people.

Larsen seems innocent from the evidence I've seen, but I'm not going to pick apart and analyze this retarded drama,

Was a 14 year old really doing this or a 19 year old. This project would have been nice if completed, don’t know how much work was really left to make this work out though. Their video seemed like they knew what they were doing but I guess it was just the regular shop channel recreated and they just called it riishop. I was hoping for this to be completed before deciding if I should install it or not.

Same difference, age doesn't matter if the people leading the project, or in charge of the server administration, are prone to drama and blowing shit up.

The project seemed pretty far along. I hope the code isn't lost and that it comes back soon.

So in other news the project is now dead because of some baseless drama claiming that they doxxed all of their users even though there's virtually NO evidence. Good job Discord.

Oh noes! Now if there only was a way to install Wii games in my Wii for free! :(
The younger generation do not know how to research first beforehand.

If you can't find your ROMs, then too bad. Buy the games yourself instead of whining on the internet like "Hey, do you know where I can find a ROM of <misc. game>?"

While I understand what you're saying somewhat, I feel like a revival is still a pretty cool way of doing things. Sure, there are alternatives, but nothing is going to have the same charm as browsing the Wii Shop.

Sure thing, but then again, its just easier to find them in the usual places and transfer them onto your SD card to install.

I don't think that's the point of a project like this. Of course I'm not RiiShop so I can't know, but this seems like something that's done to "bring back" the feeling of using the Wii Shop while also being somewhat functional.

This could have been a cool "functional archive" type thing. Like "reviving" the Wii Shop, letting it's features be usable or simulated (like adding points), without actually hosting anything or enabling the download of WiiWare or VC. I've only seen a small showcase of it, assuming that that was the idea.

Looks like it was supposed to be a bit like FreeShop instead. Yeah, no way this would survive.

I'm impressed by how quickly this fizzled out. Probably for the best.

you will always need to host something or the game pictures and such arent there.

You could potentially combine it with a WAD installer, just have the files stored locally on an SD/USB which you have to provide yourself.

Could even extend it to support custom WADs or something like an updated Homebrew browser.

okay for context I joined the riishop discord this monring to check out the channel and then got to see the whole server melt down in real time

I joined the riiconnect24 discord to get the other side of the story and here is my take as a neutral observer:
Larsen has made some VERY questionable posts (search for a zip file labeled larsenV to see these posts) and it appears the riishop was unfairly using OSC code (OSC allows for its code to be used in other open source projects but riishop is closed source).

The main claim against riishop however, the doxing, was never substantiated. This image is the closed thing to proof provixed, which shows no identifiable information whatsoever. Obviously the riiconnect24 mods shouldnt be spreading the dox, but an image showing the alleged list of IPs next to usernames with the IPs blurred should be a very easy way to confirm a dox indeed happened.

I have a fairly surface level involvement in the wii homebrew scene so I could be way off here, but I think if you're going to be throwing around dox allegations you need some solid evidence to back them up. the same goes for allegations that Dakotath was spending donations improperly.
I feel like people don't really realize how common it is to collect your IP address. The idea of it being a secret thing that should be protected is a pretty recent idea, hence the 90's and 00's online PC games that just broadcast that shit to everyone on the server.

You're right. I meant to say "without hosting any actual WiiWare or VC games". I didn't write clearly earlier.

That's a cool idea. HBB is very slick and nice, but still has some bugs I remember coming across back in '09, as far as using it nowadays goes, using the OSC build of it. But it's been a while since I last used it.
