Before you do anything, backup your save games by following this https://gbatemp.net/threads/importing-gateway-saves-to-cia-games.425743/
You'll be able to install JKSM by using FBI.3ds from your Gateway card to install JKSM.cia
Then, follow https://3ds.guide
You'll be able to use either the browser if you have one, or MSET (similar to how you install the DS profile exploit for Gateway).

  1. Reboot the system, then go to System Settings, then “Other Settings”, then “Profile”, then “Nintendo DS Profile”
  2. If the exploit was successful, you will have booted into SafeB9SInstaller
Ended up getting a blank gray screen rather than SafeB9SInstaller. Trying to figure out what I did wrong.

SafeB9SInstaller.nds is on DS cart.

boot.3dsx, SafeB9SInstaller.dat, boot.firm all on SD Card. As well as boot9strap folder with two required files inside.

Firmware is 4.4.0-10u, so I downloaded the 4.0 to 4.5 Installing boot9strap (MSET).

Also my NDS flashcart is a blue gateway.

Did you do this first?
  1. Start your DS flashcart from your device
  2. Boot SafeB9SInstaller.nds using your flashcart
  3. Select the correct option for your system version
    • 4.X.X -> “4.x SafeB9SInstaller”
    • 6.X.X -> “6.x SafeB9SInstaller”

Took a bit of time but I finally managed to install the CFW. Just out of curiosity is it possible to delete pre-installed programs (like face raiders)? Or if not can I at least delete the icons from the main menu?
You can delete them but then you'll be asked to update your system (even if you're on the latest), which will bring them back. I'd just put them in a folder and forget about them.

It happens after booting up the homebrew launcher, when selecting the safeh4x from the list.
I've made sure my wifi is connected, but I haven't tried yet the r9 release as suggested by the guide, wanted to make sure that I was following the correct one first.

And yes, I'm using the N3ds SD (32Gb), and my problem isn't really the language, but still thanks!

I don't think that's possible and even if it is why'd you want to do that?

Fuck my life, managed to solve the problem I was having only to fuck up right after.

Quick question, I forgot to check the option:
  • “Show NAND or user string in System Settings”
Now every time I run the sound exploit to see if I could reinstall the damn thing the console kind of crashes, any further suggestions ? >.<

You've done everything right except for two things:
A) you can no longer use soundhax and
B) to change your Luma settings, you need to hold the Select button while you boot your system (hold it down then press the Power button) then make sure to hit the "Show NAND blah blah" option when the Luma3DS config options show up. Press Start to save.

Fixed, god damnit you guys are the best, thanks!

Edited:

Kay! I’m finally done, followed the guide to the end without any further issues and even installed free shop as well, you guys have no clue how thankful I am for your help. Although, I still haven’t figured out how to use the R4 card itself, I’ve copied some roms I had on my PC already , but the console doesn’t seem to eve detect the cartridge.

If I were to order a 3ds LL (Japanese region) and try to install Boot9Strap with a flashcart, would any flashcart listed on the compatibility list work or would I need one specifically for a japanese console?
In other words- do the flashcarts on the 3ds.guide compatibility list work with a Japanese console?

If anyone can answer this, I'd really appreciate it.

You need to follow the part at the end of the installing boot9strap ntrboot page to restore normal flashcard functionality. Keep in mind the card can only be used for old ds roms.

You sure about that? Because on the store page it says kind of says the opposite: https://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=574

It should be able to run 3ds roms, just not old DS ones, either way, as long as free shops works with the 3ds ones I should be fine I guess.

Anyway, took me a little but I found the part of the guide you were talking about, tomorrow I’ll give it a go, big thanks!

It doesn't even mention it can play 3DS ROMs. :/ Don't know where you see that at. Having "3DS" in the title doesn't mean it runs 3DS ROMs.

Eck, getting kind of confused then… I mean, I kind of assumed it could since it says it can’t run NDS roms, if it can’t run N3DS roms either, what’s exactly it’s function then? I also had asked about it some pages ago (https://gbatemp.net/threads/3ds-noob-paradise-ask-questions-here.359035/page-2222#post-7766511) , but I guess I kind of misunderstood the answer.
Its function is to install b9s on your 3DS as the card comes preflashed with ntrboothax. Quantumcat meant you can install 3DS ROMs on your 3DS (not the flashcard) after following 3ds.guide. She was also confirming what card you should use for the process. It does not run 3DS ROMs.

Yeah, I completely misunderstood him then =S

Well, it still works out in the end, that’s what really matters! =P

Though if that’s it’s only function, then I guess the 62Gb micro SD I got for the cartridge is pretty useless, no? I mean, since the DS can only take one up to 32Gb.

If you format it as FAT32 it will work. You'll need to use a program for it as Windows can't do it on its own. Eg GuiFormat.

Is the 3DS capable of running a DS emulator with a high compatibility rate? Or should I just stick with playing them via the Gateway blue card? Also whats the easiest possible way to convert 3ds files into CIA format? Thanks.

Ds emulators, no, but but there's TWLoader, which can run many games, but definitely not close to all. The gateway blue is probably your best option.
For converting 3ds to cia: https://3ds.guide/godmode9-usage#converting-a-3ds-to-cia

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
