dont listen to the Nintendo schills here implanted at gbatemp
dont listen to the few who have accidently updated and want you to be stuck in the same boat as they are when homebrew floats up.

spooning firmware is just around the corner

Spoofing firmware is not "just around the corner". If the devs are to be believed, you won't see that any time remotely soon if ever. They have said it's likely impossible you will play 3.0.1+ games on 3.0.0, ie firmware spoofing. What we are close to is userland homebrew, which isn't enough for firmware spoofing. The issue is you can't play the newer games without the decryption keys. If we could obtain the decryption keys for 3.0.1+ we would likely be able to get homebrew on those firmwares as well which negates the need for spoofing. You really ought to educate yourself on what is actually going on in the scene. You'll be less disappointed when you don't get what you are expecting.

Even the homebrew is released soon, making emulators takes also time. Just let de dad update and join the updatedfirmware club:D
Всего самого лучшего в Новом году!

I personally think a Sky3DS-like flashcart will come before CFW to load commercial roms. I don't need retroarch emulators on yet another nintendo device, I have enough of those to play classic games on.

Ah yes gbatempers bringing piracy into every discussion just like the Americans the moonlanding.
You ARE aware that the moon landing was faked right? Filmed in the Nevada desert.

Agreeing with others about letting your son play Mario Odyssey, but let me tell you why you may not have a choice sooner or later :

He's a kid. He's going to play with it and at some point figure out how to accidentally update it. Might as well do it while you still have the power to make the decision.

That is actually true, I was there filming it.

That was just before getting into hybernation next to Mr. Disney.
It's so sad there were problems with his cryogenization chamber, but well sure they solved those in the 4 years before my slumber.
It's been not so many years since they woke and fixed me up, and though it was hard in the beginning to get used to this idea that the Soviet Union now works for us and send our Astronauts to space I've been able to adjust lately.
First I thought that they must have won the space race, perhaps the world found out about our ruse, perhaps they sent man to the moon... But no, that was not the cause, in the end it seems they were just better putting things into space, just not on the moon.
That was shocking, but I guess if it is cheaper to make them do the work, then why not. It is tax money being spared for better use after all...

Jusr update it. By the time there are decent emulators there will probably be some used Switches available (I assume we won't see great emulators for a couple years if not more).

I bought my 9 yr old Son a Switch for Xmas...He really wants odyssey too.
So we have 'hello world' running through a web browser and that's all at this point...correct?
It could take years for things to evolve.
My question is, are you guys updating for odyssey.
He really want's this game.
Thx.
I'm not updating my own switch, because I prefer to wait for homebrew. But if your son has said he wants to play Odyssey now, you should let him update his console.

For those of you not familiar with the holiday, Christmas is not for three more weeks. OP is not a horrible person refusing to let his son update his console; he hasn't even opened it yet. He is asking, three weeks in advanced, whether he should update the console. Chill.

My two cents: the next possible news on whether piracy would be possible or not will likely come with the Chaos Communication Congress event in late December, but that starts a few days after Christmas. I might have suggested getting him the new Zelda game instead, which is playable without updating, but it sounds like his interests are more aligned with Mario. I would go ahead and let him update, although I would also check this message board again on Christmas Eve or so to see if anything has changed first.

Well, you could say this year you wanted to go "Spanish style" and delay the gift until January, 6th (yeah, this is a thing, the Magi / "three wise kings" gift)... j/k

Don't update. It's the same bullshit like Always . They said it during the Wii era, they said the same shit during the Wii U era and during the 3ds era and all came back crying after that and they're doing it again and eventually will come crying back again.
Kernel acces has already been achieved but not public so in the end you'll get something like custom firmware or emunand just like it was with the PS3 and everybody also said the same shit back then and had to wait over 6 years or more before they could even hack their consoles again.

If there wasn't any possibility then devs would say ''UPDATE YOUR CONSOLES, NO HACKS COMING SOON'' But instead they're saying ''DON'T UPDATE YOUR CONSOLE NO NEW ENTRYPOINTS WILL BE AVAIBLE IN A FUCKING LONG ASS TIME''.
I'd take the devs word over people who updated accidently or people who couldn't wait.
They're just saying that shit just to make them feel better that they did update. In the end it will be the users who waited that'll have the last laugh and it will be them who updated crying in a corner once more again.
Don't fucking update or atleast buy a new console now because 3.0 consoles will be rare in the future ahead !!!

While I do not own a Switch yet (takes a while to save up 350€ when all you have left after a month is 10€ to 20€), I am planning to get one when possible.

Personally, I wouldn't give a 9-year-old a Switch, given how expensive and how fragile it is, however, since you are getting one for your kid to play Mario, then just update the system and stop worrying about it.

The Switch is reasonably recent, there probably won't be any major steps in hacking it for a year or two, most Switch games will require the latest firmware to be played. I just don't believe it's worthwhile hanging on to a firmware for one or two years and miss out on all the games that you or your kid might interested in.

Hey, not all kids are so careless. I really want to give a Switch to my 7 years old niece as a gift, I'm sure she won't break it (but her brother probably will)... Hmmm... it is not so deadly expensive after all (but if a second one has to be bought as replacement, well, that is a very different wallet-breaking story).
