The only reason I even wanted a DS was for Pokemon Diamond / Pearl and a couple of mario games. I knew about flashcards and flashcarts before, but I thought they were cheap and not worth the money. I only started pirating when Platinum in Japanese was released.

I bought it solely because piracy was possible. I can't afford games, so it would have been a waste to get a DS and never play anything.

I will not buy a 3DS until I am able to pirate on it.

That was my same reason but quite different. In my case flash carts were a dark zone because I didn't know much about and I thought they didn't work at all. One day I saw the M3 DS Real and I was amaazed with all its feartues so I bought and from then I start trying all the games I "thought" were good. I bought the DS because I wanted to play pokemon and zelda and also some of the mario games. It was going to be different without then because I actually don't use my DSi that much. My girlfriend took and I'm in college right now. I would have buy only some games and not a lot because low use I give to my DS after I got the Wii few months ago.

Well I bought my DS lite a full year before the game I bought it for even showed up (Panzer Tactics).

I bought a few games waiting on the game.

I have bought a number of games since I got my flash cart.

My buying the DS was never dependent on a flashcart, but I DO like being able to confirm the game I want isn't part of the 90% that are worthless shit only good for making the DS look like it has a lot of games for it when in truth the DS really just can claim to have the most grotesque level of shovelware in all of console history.

I say this to you Nintendo, you make good hardware, and you're nothing but a prostitute when it comes to allowing any shit to wear your name on a game case jacket.

Of course I would have. Anyone who buys a system just to get a flash cart and be done with it deserves to be sterilized, hands removed Iranian style, something.

I was less inclined to play a game and finish it if it was pirated, that's the problem. The value in the game takes a swan dive if you get it for free, especially when you have hundreds of games.

This is.... 100% True. At least for me.

I bought, and beat 100% through over 35 games on the DS (Purchased brand new aswell) before I knew what a flashcart was.

Having a flashcart is so awesome. Not only is my DS now an emulator, but I can play amazing homebrew games and be apart of this awesome community.

Compare the DS to the PSP.... Piracy has made Nintendo millions, if not billions of dollars.

So we've all heard the crazy from the media outlets that piracy is killing video games, movies, music etc. pretty much any form of media.

Nintendo has blamed piracy for lame sales on their games but at the moment, they're thriving with their multi-million mountains of cash because of their super successful sales when it comes to their current consoles, the Wii and the DS.

One could even say that most of those sales would not have happened had piracy not taken place on their consoles.

I myself am cheap and admit that I wouldn't have purchased a DS if piracy would've been impossible. I will most likely not buy many games whenever I purchase a 3DS (probably just a few) since flashcarts will be almost non-existent for the first year (just an assumption, maybe there will?).

So my question to you guys is, would you have purchased a DS if you couldn't have been able to pirate games on them?
i bought a ds long before i had ever heard of an r4, yet alone actually used one. my answer is yes.

I bought my DS off craigslist with a few games before I really knew much about flash cards. So yes I would of, and did, buy before I knew about piracy. However I would not of played near as many games had it not been for the flash card, really, I think i would of bought 4-5 games legitimately.

Edit: and yes I will agree to what was said a few posts back as well. Having the flash cart, I dont give games much of a chance before deciding I dont like them.

I got my DS Phat (which I still use) in 2005, and had no idea flashcards existed. I built up a medium-sized collection of retail cartridges since then, even though I only got an average of like one game per 4 months or so. I learned about flashcards and decided, "Hey, if I buy one of these I can get new games more often!".

Even if flashcards didn't exist I'd still have the DS, I'd just have 37 games fewer. (More if you count non-DS games)

Yes I would have. The DS has had some really good games.

Nintendo needs to stop spazing out. The DS did great.

I just wish that I could get my hands on a Pikachu DS Lite or The Limited Edition Mario DS Lite

I would have and did.

By this I mean that I accepted the gift.

I still would've bought my DS. I bought my DS when I was like 9 years-old, and at that time, I didn't know of flash carts for the DS. I bought the DS for my own entertainment.

What a dumb question.

This.

I don't think many kids buy DS's, because they know of a way to play games for free.

I also bought my DS before I knew what a flashcart was. However, I think I will wait for a flashcart before purchasing a 3DS this time around.

Same here I only found out about flashcarts about 4 years after I had my DS phat so yes i did and would have.

Yeah, most of the games I play are worth buying.
