My answer is yes because I too bought the DS before I ever knew flashcarts existed.

I probably would have gotten my DS... though I would have missed out on so much. No translated games, and yes... the free games would be missed as well.

I'd probably only have gotten a pokemon game, a final fantasy game and then a dozen of those horrible games which are so abundant on the DS.

I bought my 2 original DS's near launch (there where no flash carts for the DS at the time) and my huge stacks of DS games prove I buy games even though I own 2 flash carts.

Right now my flash cart might as well be called a Powder cart (its a homebrew dungeons and dragons type game) addictive once you get good enough at it to not die in 30 seconds...

but I bought the edition of the ds that came with metroid and warioware demos and super mario 64 ds(dunno if it was a special edition or the first release was like that) as soon as it was released

and then again I bought a ds lite as soon as it was released

I only learned about flashcarts a year ago lol

Well I bought my DS the year it came out and didn't know about flahcarts. (if they existed at that time) So yes, I would've bought my DS if flashcarts didn't exist.

i got my ds's day of release! obviously there was no flashcard at the time!
i love buying ds games, they're all really worth the money.
obviously I do have flashcards, in some ways....I actually regret ever buying a flashcard because Im left with 150+ DS games I haven't fully completed, as they were free to download.
i find buying games, for like £30.00, you play the ass of them, I miss that!

The flashcart was just a bonus. Just like that I'm buying a 3DS at launch. Wether it's gonna have flashcarts or not.

Thats only partialy true for me. I bought the DS because my friend showed me Super Mario 64 on it and the Mini Games got me hooked.

Thought I knew that GBA Flashcards existed. And before I knew it I was using my old GBA Flashcard for the earliest NDS Games. (Limit was 32 MegaByte since thats all an GBA Card can hold).
Thats probably why I still love Nanostray so much xD.
I even remember that I deleted unnececarry files from Jump Stars just to fit it on 32 Megabyte ^^.

And I will definitly buy the 3DS even if it would mean that I would have to buy every game I want to play on it. I only got a handful DS Games I really would have considered buying anyways.
So that is not really stopping me.

Two words - Brain Age

Read a report on cognitive conditioning that mentioned the DS game Brain Age.
Had to try it. Got a DS so that I could see what they were talking about and got hooked.

Discovered FlashCarts and that opened up the world of music, ebooks, and homebrew.
Enjoy watching movies I place on an iPlayer flashcart.

Would I buy a DS if there were no flashcarts? Definately!
I use a flashcart to expand the capabilities of the DS.
The added features give me near netbook capabilities in a small convenient package.

I have a DSL, DSi, and DSXL.
They all have flashcarts.
The DSi is the most versatile all around portable workhorse, but the DSXL is the best at home on a desk.

Probably. But I would likely have waited several years longer since I'm a poor student, and bought only used games (which as you may know profit Nintendo and other producers exactly not at all).

The high cost of new games and the statistical improbability of a given game being worth it don't make for a reasonable proposition if I'm buying a pig in a poke. Buying something I can play for a few hours first to see how I like it means I can spend my money effectively enough to make it a reasonable allocation of a much higher portion of my entertainment budget than it would otherwise be. The availability of flashcarts also makes it basically hassle-free to "carry" a number of games with me so I can swap out if I get bored, meaning that the DS spends much more time in my pocket and much more time being used while out and about than it otherwise would.

Effectively, flashcart access and ROM access mean that I funnel quite a bit of money towards Nintendo when there would be little or none via sanctioned routes, and it also means that the platform as a whole is much more suited to my needs.
