So how is it that a Switch on 3.0.2 firmware can run homebrew?
They all can. I'm updated to the fullest, and I run homebrew. Now that we have coldboot homebrew, we don't need to hold on to 3.0.0 anymore like it's some kind of golden goose. It's like the 9.2 of the 3DS, once a favorite, now obsolete.

The ones for 3.01-4.1 might be released sometime after people have had the chance to tinker with the new Switch revision that is not susceptible to the RCM-based exploit.

So they are waiting to see if the 4.1 exploit would work on the new hardware revision? If it worked... But how can it work if the firmware 5.X blocks it? Newer revisions would come with even newer firmware, so I dont really see the logic in that...

Meh, I guess I wull just have to wait longer, but botw dlc was too interestig not to update to 4.1

Exactly as Ronhero mentioned. A lower firmware helps ascertain what hardware revision it is. I bought a 3.2 for this very reason and have put it aside until the firmware drops. No one knows when Nintendo started the hardware revision but 3.2 guarantees you the stock was from last november - december which is safe.

That's the thing though, they actually haven't tested this exploit or any for that matter on 5.X. Basically, right now 5.X is No Man's Land so anyone who publishes the first exploit working on that gets to take all the credit. And because it hasn't been released, its safe to assume Nintendo has not yet patched it out because they don't know what the exploit is. Hence why they are holding back upon its release until they know if its patched out or not. Last but not least, the reason they haven't tested stuff out on 5.X yet is that all of their effort is being put into developing the CFW Atmosphere.

Ohhh I see. Thanks a lot for clearing that up! One would think that curiosity alone would have made them test it on 5.X, but I can't complain about all efforts going to atmosphere!

By coldboot do you mean auto-RCM? from my understanding if you boot automatically at RCM then there is really not a single reason for holding off in update, unless im missing something.

The coldboot exploit is RCM + sending a payload via USB cable to the Switch. AutoRCM is a softmod version of the exploit as before that, we had to do a hardmod to enter RCM. And this exploit will work on all firmwares of current Switch revisions so while there is no reason to not update, soon we will have EmuNAND support which will let us update anyways. This is done so in the hopes that the lower firmwares can enjoy more 'user-friendly' exploits one day.

So you do not see any sense in waiting for CFW if someone has a Switch with 3.0.2? In other words 3.0.2 owners should upgrade? Upgrade to new FW or 4x?

Pretty much. Unless you have literally want to play none of the switch library and have no reason to update, I would just go ahead and update. The benefits to staying on lower firmware are incredibly trivial at the moment and will soon become non existent.

I have a 2.3.0 switch now. I can wait until the launch of pokemon (maybe end of 2018). In 7 months we should have more possibilities
