Its a common problem to most GB/GBC games.
The battery just stops.

I myself dugged up some of my old GB/GBC games I bought when they game out! I was aware of this problem so I was curious if it still worked. I didnt expected it to work after 13 years and 9 Years respectively.

But they did work!

The games I'm referrig to are Pokémon Yellow and Crystal.

Can I be one of the few lucky ones whos game still works?

Tell me your story!

They all still worked perfectly when I dug mine up, but I got my soldering iron and change the batteries anyways, just in case. I didn't lose my saves too, because I used a mega memory pack to back them up.

You bought a new cartridge? You could have just bought the battery.

My Pokemon Silver which I have owned for about 10 years still saves. Same for both of the Zelda Oracle games. (I bought both and played them to death)

usually, my games batteries ran out 2 years or so after buying them...
specially with pokemon.
i think its actually a thing of usage.
how many times you switch it on and off, how long you play etc.

Ive still got that Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest (the one thats like secret of mana on GBA) and its probably older than any of my other games and it still saves, but I never played that as much as dragon quest monsters or pokemon.

on another note... i've had quite a few games give up on me cause the contacts wore off. like with my crystal, after a year, i had to open the cart and put a little piece of paper behind the contacts to push them forward, but one day, it just became unreadable anyway.

something similar happened to my old xploder... oh how i loved that thing, for gbc as well.
you could actually find your own codes with that thing by checking values that changed between the last checks.
never saw that in any other cheat device outside of emulators..

I had a Gameshark for Gameboy/Color that let us do that as well, I believe.
