WoodRPG v1.01

I think the Wii connectivity is, in fact, planned for AKAIO. Don't take my word for it though.

I am going to take your word for it. And if your word fails, I am going to your home and whine and complain until you go mad.

Forget the fact I am too old to whine and complain, I'd do it. Forget the fact that I probably don't know you, I'd find a way to find you, just to whine and complain. Kicking and screaming and all.

Scary threat...

And this WoodRPG, seems to me like the akAIO for the Acekard RPG XD

That seems pretty sweet (although to be honest, I haven´t updated my RPG for an extremely long time!)

I have an RPG and I tried WoodRPG 1.00. Two small, but annoying, things drove me back to AKAIO, and I'm wondering if either is changed, or if there's any way to REQUEST the changes:
The Blue and Green screens at boot.... so god awful ugly, I can't explain why I hate them so much.
The save file naming convention. NDSROMNAME.nds.sav instead of NDSROMNAME.sav. At least AKAIO gives the option... Even IF I didn't care enough about which method was used, I have dozens of .sav files I'd have to change over (I may delete the game from the system, but I almost never delete the save file, unless I really hated the game).

Also, if anyone is truly familiar with them both, in regards to the RPG... what are the major (and minor, if known and time allows) differences between WoodRPG and AKAIO?

much better rpg compatibility.
coded for the rpg, runs better on the rpg with less overhead.
better 3in1 support, although different. the firmware assumes you leave a 3in1 in your ds at all times.

besides that alot of the other stuff is shared with the akaio devs. stuff like softreset fixes, compatibility fixes, rpg related fixes, etc.

right now all of the flash kit teams simply spit out updates that fix games. this firmware (and akaio) strive to better the firmware with each release. look at this as a better, free, alternative firmware for the rpg.

i don't agree with your reasons for not wanting to use it, i think you are being a bit picky, but you are entitled to your opinions. you can use akaio to do a batch rename of your save files, you could also code a quick script to do it in linux/unix or a batch file in windows. also you can use dos commands to do it using wild cards.

But it is backwards in other aspects too, so he has a lot of work before catching up to AIO in terms of features. There isn't even a cheat database function implemented. Nor is it compatible with the AIO savelist files, and running what is essentially a beta software is not worth going through every single game just to detect the save type before moving back all my .sav files.

I'll keep watching it in case he does surpass AIO in features, like adding save states and bringing the cheat management up to date. But I don't see any reason to switch at this time.

This really doesn't tell me much. Microsoft makes similar claims with every release of Windows ;-p

Does this get rid of the annoying rumble every time I load a commercial rom? I have to turn down rumble to minimum on AKAIO or risk hearing something that sounds like it's going to break the machine every time I load a commercial rom - very annoying.

I'm all for a separate loader - makes me feel different than the throngs of AK2 users who swear the RPG is useless. But with all this being shared, what is left for WoodRPG to set itself apart, other than being first to have a new, or more polished feature?

Better is a subjective term that I've been trying to define... I've been trying to find point for point benefits. The games it suggests play better, or have Wii connectivity are none that I'd likely play, so, so far I don't really see much of a benefit other than the improved 3 in 1 support, but I'd like to see actual statements of the differences of the 3in1 compared to AKAIO... This could definitely cinch the deal for me using it.

Consider it another way. As of now, I have seen no benefits to Woodrpg, and a couple of downsides (at least until I can see clearly defined positives), which leaves little room for using it as opposed to AKAIO. Being told something is specifically for one product as opposed to another thing which is universal carries no weight with me until reasons can be provided as to why I've so far stuck with AKAIO. Now....

All this has made me seem, and feel, like an undeserving jerk who wants it all, and wants it now, with no appreciation for the developers. Truth be told, I absolutely love everything that's been done with both, and anyone that puts time and effort into a thing, even if it's not as good as someone else's work, I still appreciate. After all, their talents are far grander than mine, and I can be nothing but a critic in all of this, and lord knows I hate critics.

I'm more looking for a clean cut de facto description of the differences, which would not only give me, but others reasons to use WoodRPG as opposed to AKAIO. I just hope that nothing I've said so far would be considered discouraging to the developers of these great loaders, as both are far superior to their original "official" counterparts. I hope that makes sense, as I'm typing this with only one eye open.

honestly use whatever you want. but the fact remains that if it wasn't for gelu and then ywg, akaio wouldn't have the rpg support it has now. almost all of the rpg code in akaio is from those two, including what will be in 1.5.

personally i like a bit of change, and woodrpg provides just that.

Beta software? Catching up to AIO in terms of features? Back then, instead of joinning AKAIO Team, gelu continued to develop his firmware and let them use his code, because he had a different opinion about how the firmware should be. I think he preferred a simple, small, compatible and light firmware. Don't expect WoodRPG to implement AKAIO features nor "extras", like save state.
The cheat function is not that difficult to use and it IS compatible with savelist. Open globalsettings.ini and look for a line related to savelist, change 0 to 1.

It would be very difficult to list every difference of the two firmwares. It is easier to just test it. I recommend WoodRPG for people that only want to play games (as it is the most compatible firmware for the RPG).

I'm assuming your talking about the processOldSaveList line in the globalsettings.ini file.
What exactly does this enable? I'm pretty fuzzy on this whole discussion about savelists? What are they and what do they do?

The RPG uses a savelist to store the save type of the ROMs you played (it automatically detects the save type in the first time the game saves) and the save types you have manually set. There are 3 "types" of savelist: savelist.bin, provided by Acekard Team with a lot of save type already set (errors are rare, but it seems that they don't update it anymore, so games released in 2009 are not in the list); savelistex.bin, this is where the RPG stores the save types (automatically detected and manually set) when you are using Official firmware or AKAIO; GAMEDATA.BIN, where RPG stores the save types (automatically detected and manually set) when you are using gelu's firmware or WoodRPG.
If you update to WoodRPG and don't enable that line and play a game you were playing with Official or AKAIO, the RPG will have to detect the save type, by doing this, it will overwrite your old save with a blank save and you will lose your progress in the game.
