Easy backup/restore option

My proposal works this way:

Add 2 new menu items "Backup" and "Restore" to the start menu.

When a ROM is selected option "Backup" will copy ".sav" to ".bak" (of course warning if a .bak already exists, just like paste does)
When a ROM is selected option "Restore" will copy ".bak" to ".sav" (of course warning if a .sav already exists, just like paste does)

This is much easier that the current way of saving in Wood R4:

- Have a backup folder
- Change the layout to show save files
- Copy
- Change to backup folder
- Paste
- Change to ROM folder to continue playing

And restoring:

- Have a backup folder
- Change the layout to show save files
- Change to backup folder
- Copy
- Change to ROM folder
- Paste
- Continue playing from backup state

(normally I prefer the .sav files to be hidden since they clutter up the menu)

In the R4 and YSMenu this works by showing the save or backup file and press A. Also changing the layout showing the sav file with "select" is a lot faster than Wood R4 which requires changes in the settings menu. The proposed method is even more simple and does not require to change the view at all, it becomes an operation at the ROM instead which is visible anyway.

I use backup/restore a lot to try things without wanting to hurt my game in progress. Also counteracts Resetti in ACWW.

I'd like to suggest....

-An optional feature where every time you load a game, it logs the name in a log.txt file... Like for if you have one of those things from http://www.messageboardchampion.com/ncard and forget to update often.
-An option to go back to the DS Main menu, for if you have to calibrate your screen or something.
-A little thing that automatically checks for a Wi-Fi signal... Like the little bars when you try to connect to Wi-Fi on any DS game.
-A display of how much your DS is charged, like on the DS main menu.
-A sort option where you can sort by name or recently added or recently played or whatnot.
-Something that checks for corrupted files or whatnot upon starting up the DS, and locks you up at a screen that tells you you have corrupted files if you do have corrupted files.
-If a homebrew doesn't have a .nds.sav file associated with it, ask if you want one generated. (Like with Tales of Dagur. I couldn't get my R4 to generate a .nds.sav file for it)
-Warn you if you have a .nds or .gba file without a .nds.sav or .gba.sav file and don't have enough room to generate a save file. (I've heard if you don't have enough room on your Micro SD and try to generate a .sav file, it freezes and deletes everything off of your card or something)
-Soft Reset on homebrew
-Soft Reset on homebrew

would be nice to avoid the "autorunWithLastRom" by pressing B or another button
Are you talking about the rpg or R4 version? I did not think wood R4 had autorunWithLastRom capability unless you are using a patched version.

I have another suggestion:

2-3 updates per month, depending on the demand for a game fix.

your just asking for NO updates.

YWG will update whenever he wants to.

Id like to see the ability of plugins such as the ones on the original acekard. Music, video, images. also GBA frame support like the orginal R4.
I have a thought about Emulators, whether you could use them as plugins too and if you could. would you be able to make skins such as the original Gameboy Color.

-Soft Reset on homebrew

I Agree with you on the
  • DS Menu Option
  • DS Battery Life checker
  • Homebrew Reset
  • Size left on the card
I would also like to add which i didnt on my last post an option in which when it turns on it says "You Recently Played {NDS Game here} would you like to open it again?" -yes -no. also the users would have an option to enable or disable this feature for checking the last ds game played when the ds gets turned off, not reset.

i keep adding ideas like this new one. When it is certain holidays or days, could there be a script so when its on it has a message for example Merry Christmas or Happy Birthday?

do you know about save slots copying and select+l key combination?
All that does in Wood R4 is switch to "show all files" and the second time to the normal view. Am I missing something?
i dont belive you are. the only way to copy as far as i know is to use the start menu and copy the save file.

I have a batch file which will back up all the saves to 'My Documents\DS-Saves\[Date]\[Time]'
.Might be of interest to you

I can't run batchfiles on the DS, can I? Only maybe if I install DSLinux. Making a backup on the PC is not an issue. Its when you are sitting and play with the DS and want to make a snapshot of the current state, then try something out and then revert to the earlier snapshot. I do not want to go to the PC every time I want this and on the road I do not even have access to a PC. Currently I do this with copy/past and a separate folder called Backup, but with the R4 software this was so much easier.

The bat file your supposed to put into your Micro sd card and run it from your pc, not the ds.

I imagine somewhere there's a homebrew FTP client, as the dumpers FTP the roms.

Otherwise, Wood has 4 save slots for each game. Just use that to copy your saves to another slot.

I believe you, but I haven't found this function in Wood R4. There is nothing in the menu about save slots (unless I overlooked it) and there is no room inside the save file as it has the standard size of 512 kb. So if you would care to explain it, that would be great. Then this info can be added to the FAQ (its not there) and my suggestion could be revoked. Its not obvious how this works, at least not to me.

My suggestion was for a standalone solution on a disconnected DS. So this is not a solution for what I try to achieve. It may be a great solution, don't get me wrong, and could be quite useful, but not for what I intended.

It looks like the Wood save slots addresses my intention, but other than mentioned here I never heard about it and obviously I don't know how to use it either. I now copy save files in and out a Backup folder I created and it is cumbersome (on the other hand, one can make as much of these backup folders as needed, you can have much more than only 4 save file states).
