Ok, but what do I get for that? What functions?

As I recall some administrative stuff is unavailable on "inferior" versions ( I think regedit was missing from home premium ?), I got(YARRR) Ultimate because It allows me to update the UI language via Windows Update and without any extra purchase/pirate.

In general you have full access to any function the OS has to offer.

Well I've had experiences with a couple of OS's from Linux Distros to mainstream OSs, so I'm not really new at computer. I was just suggesting a Lite version of XP over Windows 7, because I have tried both on a comp with similar specs and a Lite version of XP worked best for me. The retail XP is full of Bloatware which isn't needed; Lite is always a good alternative if you don't want to have to keep up with daily maintenance and have to remove unnecessary services manually.
1 - I've seen modified versions of XP remove MSCONFIG.
They'll cut down all sorts of shit they think isn't needed just to claim they're giving you a custom OS.

2 - A PIRATED AND OBVIOUSLY TAMPERED-WITH OS. You don't know THE FIRST FUCKING THING ABOUT COMPUTER SECURITY, DO YOU?

I think having a WORKING OS that you are sure has no rootkits or preinstalled backdoors is worth RUNNING THROUGH A LIST AND UNCHECKING A FEW FUCKING SERVICES YOURSELF.

EDIT: Regedit missing from home premium? Who the fuck spewed that bullshit out of their wordhole? :\

God, nobody seems to have any fucking clue what's what when it comes to... computers in general.

It is THAT FUCKING HARD TO GOOGLE?

Well obviously my crash course in Computer Science III isn't doing me any good.

I understand how certain Lite releases may have malicious ware and may only work to a certain extent, but it all depends on what release you get. I got mine from a secure group that has had a lot of positive feedback. Their release still had msconfig and regedit still intact (even though I removed and substituted the latter) along with the rest of XP's important components. Their release was only made to remove unnecessary tools (e.g. remote desktop), programs (e.g. Solitaire) and services so that you could start on a system that's actually clean and can be easily built upon. I also ran a check on it to make sure it was safe and results came back clean. I'm satisfied on how well the system runs even though I don't use it anymore.

I don't mean to be a dick, but are you serious? If you have EVER been a part of the computer industry, whether working at a computer shop or as a network engineer, you're end-user is nearly retarded. You have to learn to have a LITTLE bit of sympathy for people who don't know things that you do. If you were to ask a rocket scientist how to build a rocket, you'd look like a dumbass too.

I doubt you have been in the industry long enough to understand thing like this... if you even HAVE been in the industry.

Chill out. Either help the guy or leave. You don't HAVE to be here...

I GUARANTEE I have been doing this longer than you have. Compared to others, you don't have a "fucking clue".

Short of Rydian being a potty mouth again, I would pick XP for anything under 2 gigs(honestly 3, but meh.) The video card is low end as well. If you're running a mid-range dual core CPU or better, invest in a couple of minor upgrades, and go Windows 7. (Namely, Memory, and Video Card) Low-end Dual core, or Single core CPU, and I would definately stick with XP.

Congratulations on not contributing anything to the topic at hand.

If you can do better than me (which is what you're saying), then why didn't you do it?

I don't see you correcting any bullshit in here, so who are you to talk about how I'm not doing it correctly?

It's not that you're wrong... you're just an ass.

I don't need to prove my e-penis. If you need to see it.. just ask.

29, and I think a website that caters to child-adult gamers should have an amount of language filter. Forgive me for trying to not sound like a sailor on leave.

People swear like a sailor when they don't have an intelligent word to replace it with.

I find Rydian's language foul, and un-needed, but he doesn't lack intelligence. Just seems to get emotional easily. (Just from the standpoint of a guy who lurks a web-forum.)

I'm not calling him stupid. I just think that once you hit adulthood, it is time to start acting like one.

I'm an ass when it comes to tech stuff. And there's a reason.

IT'S ACTUALLY IMPORTANT.

Video games I'm chill about, because they don't really matter.

Computers, however... paypal accounts, ebay accounts, financing information, personal conversations, they're full of (and used for) all sorts of information and even people's jobs, shit you do NOT fuck with.

If somebody loses a life in New Super Mario Brothers because a guy told him to take the wrong door in a ghost house... oops. Oh well.
If a guy loses his $56,000 savings because the pirated and modified OS he was using was keylogging him... that is NOT an "oops, oh well" situation.

You're right.

Also, Rydian is right. I would not reccommend a "stripped down" version of any OS, unless you have old and terrible hardware you are running it on. In fact, if you have old hardware, I would suggest running a flavor of Linux (such as Fedora or Red Hat).

The point is, if you only have the MINIMUM required specs, stay away from that OS. You should exceed 90% of all requirements to have an enjoyable experience.

Good rule of thumb in my experience is to double the minimums, and you're good.
